Marc Stone presents:
SACRED FUNK!!!!
A Concert to benefit the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic
Friday, May 4th 8pm at
The Old Point Bar
545 Patterson St. in Algiers Point, New Orleans
Featuring:
Grandmasters of Sacred Steel from Rochester, NY
THE CAMPBELL BROTHERS
With special guests
WALTER “WOLFMAN” WASHINGTON, SHANNON Mc NALLY, KIRK JOSEPH, ARLEE LEONARD, LYNN DRURY, SEAN C, MARC STONE, EDDIE CROFT, JAMARR ALLEN and many more!!!
The New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic has been long at the forefront of the efforts to care for New Orleans’ treasured music community. In celebration of their ninth anniversary, we are presenting a very special concert featuring NEA Heritage Award winning Sacred Steel artists The Campbell Brothers and many of New Orleans’ most celebrated musicains. This will be the second meeting of many of these artists. Last year’s concert with Campbell Brothers was a sold out, all night extravaganza that raised over $6,000 for the clinic and gave birth to a new sound called Sacred Funk.
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see so many world-class artists in a warm, intimate, great sounding venue. Last year, the Campbell Brothers next major appearance after the Old Point was at Carnegie Hall! Only 180 tickets will be available, so please act fast to insure your place at this incredible event. Great music for a great cause!!!
Tickets will be $40 at the door day of show, or $30 in advance through www.marcstonemusic.com (http://www.marcstonemusic.com/).
and if the ticket is too steep for you, come Sat. 5/5 and see the Campbell Brothers plus the Marc Stone Band and special guests for only $15 in advance (as opposed to $20 at the door) thru my website.
Or get tix for both shows for only $40!!! Save $20!

Could be. I stole the announcement from the PDKK board and just did a copy and paste.
The website listed does not mention this name.

I know!! Leaving Rebirth was the best thing he did for his career...Rebirth is super cool, nothing against them at all.
I still can't believe Bob French invited him to play both sets for fest...especially the one with the big boys...Marsalis and H. Connick Jr. :) He's playing Kermit's wedding too with Bob!
I'm so proud of him....

Well deserved turn of events for him for sure. I agree that Rebirth is great but as it did for Kermit, I hope that it does it for Shamarr-he really deserves all good fortune.
I love the Old Point..didn't get out to Algiers last fest-going out there for something this year, can't remember what it is for ;)

I was going to post these shows myself. I was at the benefit gig last year and let me tell you -- it was of the 5 best shows I have ever seen. I'm not exaggerating -- I see 1-2 shows a week in New York and have been coming to jazzfest for around 15 years. I'm sure if you ask anyone who was there, they'll tell you it was one of the highlights too. I have a few of their cds, have seen the Campbell's at fest and in clubs around NY and was impressed; but there is something about mixing all of those NOLA musicians with the Campbells at the Old Point that night that was outrageous!
So hop a ferry, catch a cab, steal a car if you have to: just get there!
rosetree

If you catch the ferry, make sure you have a way to get home. Since Katrina, the schedule has been cut way back at night  Last ferry back is 9:00

Do the ferry's run back to your side later than that? What are the plans if any to extend hours?
I've always cabbed it home from Old Point. Even before the storm, the last boat back was before midnite. Cab fare was around $20 or $25 IIRC.

We have tried to petition the CCC to extend hours but they are ##!!!&^%# azzholes! They don't give a crap. The last ferry from the East bank is 8:45 and from the Westbank @9:00.
If you split a cab, the price is not too bad :)

The Old Point is on Patterson Ave in Algiers Point. Patterson runs right next to the levee. (it is what some people call the River road, not to be confused with the River road on the Eastbank). It's 5 blocks from the ferry at 545 Patterson St. The area is relatively safe and only has on street parking. Go to www.oldpointbar.com for more info.
Last year's show was fantastic. I've been coming to Jazzfest for 15 years or so and the show was one of the best in all those years. Unfortunately, I won't be there for the 2nd weekend. As to getting back to the Quarter, I had no trouble catching a cab but they didn't start showing up until around 2:00 in the morning.

Corona, I've been sitting on the fence until yesterday. I came very close to buying Funky Meters/Trucks tickets at HOB 2nd Sat but I could never forgive myself if I was to miss the Campbells both nights. There is only one band that would cause me to miss these two shows. Saturn, thank you so so very kindly for posting this & making my day!!!

Jordan, I have to agree. It was one of the highlights of my long jazzfest experience. Were you there for Fri night or Sat night show? I was there on Friday. Not too crowded either which was just awesome. Only better show I saw was next evening; PBS w/Bonerama & Skerik @Howlin Wolf. I'm not a huge PBS fan by any means and they totally blew me away that night.

I went to the benefit show, not the Saturday one. This year I'm going to both. I was right up front last year (leaning against the pole) and it wasn't crowded at all. I had a little selfish inclinitation to keep it to myself at first --but the music is so wonderful, and the benefit is for a good cause, that I had to share it with y'all. It's a small place for sure, but we can phone-booth it for a night of great music -- I for one promise to shower after fest so I offend fewer of you.

Yes, I always rent the biggest van National has. If you are willing to squeeze in and wait until the very end of the show, I'm happy to bring a bunch of you all back (although I may have a bunch of folks with me). By the way, that goes for any show -- feel free to flag me down at Tips, Southport or any club -- if I'm going close to your way, I'm happy to take you. Perhaps I'll put a threadhead sign of some sort on the dash.

I was at the Sacred Funk show on the first day, and Marc Stone not only put it together but also played with them . . and it was an incredible show!!! It totally made the adventure getting there (I had completely lost my voice, the ferry wasn't running and the cabbie I got didn't know how to get to Algiers and the Old Point Bar) TOTALLY worth it!!!

These are the hours for FQF:
"The Algiers/Canal Street ferry will have special operating hours Friday and Saturday to accommodate French Quarter Festival traffic beyond normal operating hours.
On both days, the ferry will operate from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. The last trip from Algiers will be at 9:30 p.m. and the last trip from Canal Street will be at 9:45 p.m. "
Even if they do this for JF, you'll still need to cab it back to the Eastbank....

I'm happy to bring as many people as can fit, it is just a little hard for me to plan ahead because I have a krewe of non-planners with me. That being said, I do rent a minivan and am renting a house facing the fairgrounds, and would pick people up. My plan would be to leave fest at 7:00, shower, put the kids to sleep and be out the door on Fri by 7:45. After the Campbells we're heading to Howlin' Wolf for the remains of the Bayou Rendezvous.
Saturday we'd shower, put down the kids, grab a po' boy at the Parkway with Johnny Sansone and head to the Campbells around 9:00. After the Campbells we'd stop at Banks Street for Joe Krowne (if there is time) or for Billy Iuso at Le Bon Temps.
Sorry I can't commit for rides ahead of time, but as it usually does in NO, it usually works out. Especially if you are down with that basic schedule. I'll know more after the first weekend.

I can't believe the Campbell Brothers will be playing locally during the fest....:D I had never heard of them till one of the threads on this board, and then I watched them on YouTube....OMG!!! Electrifying to say the least, and I'm a big gospel fan, so I was bummed that they weren't scheduled to play fest. I missed JF 2005, one of the few times, and I heard about their awesome performance. Anyhow, as if there wasn't enough going on.....now I have to figure a way to squeeze this in......I love it! I'm almost thinking of going on the second night when it is just them and Marc Stone. I'm just going to do one night....but there are so many other things, Instruments a Comin', Patry, other shows.....that I thought I would miss the big benefit on Friday. Any thoughts on this? Also, is it likely to sell out? Maybe I better decide quick. Man, this fest is beyond belief (getting those dancing shoes ready!)

Hey Bruce. I'm going to Rosys on Friday night for Trombone Shorty and Mardi Gras Indians and to Campbell Brothers on Sat night so I think your idea is a great idea. . Bought my ticket last night for that sat night show and it was $15 and no fees, one of the cheaper shows around.

As for directions, you can mapquest it or I'll help ya if that doesn't work.
The ferry's your best bet getting there, but it won't be runnin' when you're done! :D

Damn, that's scary Jordan. Same schedule as me.

Hey everyone,
Great to see all of the interest in the Campbells shows at Old Point. I can't tell you how psyched we are. We recorded last years shows and mixed a rrecord from it that should be available soon.
In answer to some of the questions I have seen: All of the guests will be playing with the Campbells. On Friday we will start off with a bunch of the guests doing a round robin acoustic set, with everyone switching off leading and everyone backing each other on their tunes. We will bring the Campbells on for the end of that set. After the first break it's all Campbells plus the horns, singers, etc.
The second night my band will open and then it's the Campbells and some special guests for the rest of the night. Either night you will hear LOTS of Campbell Brothers. I wouldn't go through all throuble of flying my favorite band down here if I wasn't going to get hear them play a whole lot!
As for transpo, the ferry should be running until midnight (or 11:30) so you can take the ferry ovwer and cab it back. Also, if you the Campbell Brothers thread, there are people making carpool arrangements, etc. It's not complicated to drive, the best way is to just take the bridge, take the first exit to the right (Gen. De Gaulle), follow the loop and take your first left at L.B. Landry (you will see the Fisher Projects across the street). Follow Landry ALL THE WAY TO THE LEVEE at Patterson St. (Landry will change names to Whitney about half way to the levee). Take a left and you will see the Old Point on the corner about 7 blocks after you turn.
As for advance tix, you can purchase them through my website at www.marcstonemusic.com Tix are already being purchased and after the new OffBeat comes out with a 1/4 page ad, tix for the benefit will go fast. We pre-sold more than half the tix last year and had to turn some people away at the door (capacity is only 200, and no way am I risking this show getting shut down). The second noght last year alomst sold out at the door with almost no advertising, so again, I recommend getting tix in advance. Plus the advance tix are 25% cheaper than at the door. There are no paper tix, your name will be at will call.
Thanks so much, and even if you can't get to the benefit show Friday, please support the New Orleans Musicians' Clinic, they are the premier organization for taking care of the musicians down here.

I was just in town for FQF, and according to the signs at the entrance to the ferry, the last boat leaves at either 8:15 or 8:45 (I forget). But it hasn't been 11:30 since Katrina.
So go early.

Hey guys! Thanks for the bump. Please make sure to introduce yourselves to me when you are at the show. I may be a little consumed (a little, who am I kidding?), but I still would like to put some faces to names.
The support this show has been getting is great. It's really good to know that last years' show touched so many people, and that so many people get how special the Campbells music is. I can tell you from working with them, they are every bit as wonderful as people as they are musicians. This makes 2 years in a row that they are coming basically for free to do a clinic benefit. Hopefully next year we can get JF to put the whole Sacred Funk thing at the fest!

Hey Jordan (are you Jordan from NYC that I talked to last week?),
I haven't seen the ZuZu man in a while, he stopped setting up out side Old Point about 6 mos. ago. I'm going to see if I can get in touch with him. I also talked to Sortez Cafe here in the Point to see if they wanted to set something up. Can't guarantee it, but I think there will be some kind of food happening, but you might want to load up on yummies at the fest just in case.
Whether or not there is food, I promise that there will be drinks!
Talked to Chuck Campbell yesterday, they guys are very psyched to be coming back. they loved playing Old Point and meeting all those NOLA musicians last year, so this will be a bit of a reunion. Also, audio and video clips of last years show should be up on my website in a couple of days.
Thanks everybody!

Hey Ya'll-------------
I have never gotten to see the Campbell Bros. live before and am not leaving NO this year until I do. I can only go to Algiers one night. I need opinions on which show would be the one to choose-----Fri or Sat? I know I've gotta buy fast!!!!!!

Hey Monkeywoman,
If you have trouble deciding, come both nights! Transpo should not be a big issue (you can take the ferry over the the Point both nights, cab it or carpool it back) and it's way cheaper if you buy tix for both.
But if you can only come to one night, I'd go for Friday. And I'm saying that even though if I make any money all wknd it's from Sat. since Fri is a benefit for NOMC. Last year both nights were great, each with a different character and vibe, but seeing all those great NOLA players with the Campbells in a tiny little place like Old Point is something else. (Not to toot our own horn, but if you were there, you know what I mean!)

I believe the ferry will run until 11:45 or midnight during fest.
As for the bus, if you want to set something up, go ahead, but I've got a full plate and I think I would need insurance if I offered transpo.
Tix are selling nicely, I would definitely recommend advance, especially for Fri since that show sold out last year and there seems to be a lot of interest again.
I'm very excited. Just having the Campbells in our little neighborhood bar is an incredible thrill.
Thanks,

I went to the Friday show with the Campbell Brothers and the guests......how awesome it was! I would have to say it was the highlight of the fest. I had never seen them, and having previously read this thread and hearing how great they were last year and at the blues tent the prior year, I was really feeling bad I missed them. But I am so happy to have had the chance this year. All of the musicians at this benefit were first-class! This is as good as it gets!! Special thanks to Marc Stone for hosting a very memorable evening.
