The mystery is finally solved.
How does the small arrow on your computer monitor work when we move the mouse?
Haven't you ever wondered how it works?
With the aid of a screen magnifying lens, the mechanism becomes apparent.
Click on the link below and you will find out. When it appears, slowly move your mouse over the light gray circle and you will see how the magic works.

This has nothing to do with anything else (which is what bar conversations are all about) but........
I have been reading for years how nature is making a comeback in the immediate area of New Yawk City/Joisey. I believed it without seeing evidence until today when I went to run and crossing a little footbridge that goes over a little inlet directly across from lower Manhattan, near a scrap iron
salvaging place I spot one of these standing near the water trying to catch fishhttp://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/Infocenter/photo_htm/Images/h1960pi.jpg
To say I was shocked and amazed is an understatement.

wahoooo! Satchmo with the girls.....get a place near Frenchmen you guys....it's so fun and you know it!!!! The Frenchmen St. Club Strut is Friday night....$20 gets you in all the clubs:
"One highlight of the festival is the Satchmo Club Strut, which takes full advantage of the many music venues in close proximity aong Frenchmen and Decatur streets. On the night of Friday, Aug. 4, guests purchase armbands for admission to all the participating clubs, and walk - or, that is, strut - from one to the next while marching brass bands and the city’s permissive open-container policy keep the upbeat party atmosphere going outside."

Got back this afternoon from a great weekend with Denbear at the Harmony Festival (featuring the New Orleans Social Club, Brian Wilson, Erykah Badu, The Roots, Moe, Umphrey's McGee, and a surprise visit from Taj Mahal) in Santa Rosa.
Still recovering from watching the final episode of The Sopranos (sniff) that my TiVo recorded last night.

Drinks For The Upcoming Hurricane Season
CATEGORY 5
1/2 oz. vodka
1/2 oz. tequila
1/2 oz. rum
1/2 oz. bourbon
1/2 oz. gin
Sweet-and-sour mix
Splash of fruit juice
Combine vodka, tequila, rum, bourbon and gin in a tall glass. Fill remainder of glass with sweet-and-sour mix and splash of juice. Stir, then garnish with an inverted drink umbrella. Drink during peak storm hours, and vow not to believe anyone who tries to tell you the hurricane that flooded your garage and destroyed your shed was just a Category 1.
CONE OF PROBABILITY
1 oz. cinnamon schnapps
1 sugar cone
Pour the schnapps into the sugar cone. Every time you hear a TV weatherman say, "cone of probability," bite off the end of the cone and down the shot. If you hear Jim Cantore say it, drink two shots consecutively. (They should change this to the "Weatherman Zone"..damn them. Have you ever noticed that, despite all the cone of probability talk, if a weatherman is parked in front of your house your rear en is toast?)
FEEDER BAND
2 oz. Midori
2 oz. rum
1 scoop vanilla ice cream
After your home loses power, combine Midori and rum in a cocktail glass.
Add a scoop of the vanilla ice cream that is melting in your freezer. Stir and drink through a straw.
BEACH EROSION
1 1/2 oz. Goldschläger
1 1/2 oz. apple brandy
1 pack Sugar in the Raw
Combine Goldschläger, apple brandy and sugar in cocktail glass. As you drink, seriously contemplate moving your Yankee rear end back to the north where it belongs!
DOWNED POWER LINE
1 1/2 oz. rum
5 oz. Jolt Cola
Combine ingredients in a cocktail glass. Drink while trying to figure out how the heck you're supposed to go two freakin' weeks without television and AC.
FLOOD ZONE
2 oz. Kahlúa
2 oz. Baileys Irish cream
4 oz. rum
Serve in a 6-ounce glass and laugh-cry deliriously as the mess spills all over the countertop.
COLD SHOWER
2 oz. Blue Aftershock
4 oz. Sprite
Combine in a cocktail glass with crushed ice you received after waiting in line for three hours at a mall parking lot. Take a deep breath, sip and scream like a little girl when the cold beverage hits your tongue. Repeat.
LOOTERS WILL BE SHOT
1 oz. Jack Daniel's
Splash of sarsaparilla
Rock salt
Load both barrels of a shotgun with rock salt. Climb to the roof of your house with gun, bottle of Jack Daniel's and can of sarsaparilla. Fill shot glass with Jack and splash of sarsaparilla. Watch for looters. When you spot one, blast his butt with rock salt. Drink shot. Repeat.
THE CHAIN SAW
1 oz. Goldschläger
1 oz. Rumplemintz
3 oz. Jim Beam
Splash of vermouth
Combine Goldschläger, Rumplemintz and Jim Beam in an empty soup can. Add splash of vermouth. Drink. Remove chain saw from garage and attempt to cut up fallen tree limbs in yard. Ask neighbor to drive you to hospital when it all goes horribly wrong.
FOUR-WAY STOP
1 1/2 oz. vodka
1 1/2 oz. vodka and Midori
1 1/2 oz. vodka and Galliano
1 1/2 oz. vodka and grenadine
Pour each ingredient into a separate shot glass. Serve one to yourself and three other people. The person with the clear shot of vodka drinks first. The person to his right drinks the Midori shot, and so on. If somebody drinks out of order, develop a quick case of road rage and beat the living crap out of him.
BLUE TARP
1 1/2 oz. Curacao
2 oz. pineapple juice
Splash of lime
Combine ingredients in a leaky paper cup and serve. Wait six to eight months for someone to repair the cup. If you're impatient, hire an unlicensed, out-of-state contractor to do the job for an exorbitant sum and pray he doesn't hurt himself in the process.

Ooooh, it was, chica!! Both in the daytime and for the nighttime shows - then they have these cool smaller venues on the grounds, such as a "Casbah" Mediterranean tea house . . . in a huge desert tent with Persian carpets on the ground and lots of cushions to sit/lie on while listening to the music on the small stage in there.
Also, gorgeous weather (although I had an awful allergy attack on Saturday), great food, excellent vendors and camping . . . other than the maniacs who blasted our camping area with rather loud music at 4:20 AM every morning - what's not to like! :D

Ahhh, chilly cloudy night here in New Yawk/Joisey but seeing Booker T & the M.G's outside by the river warmed it up nicely. Seen em before, but man I never get tired of em. Did Green Onions, Hip Hug-Her, Time Is Tight, Groovin, Summertime, Soul Limbo, and my favorite, their killer version of Hang Em High. Then they brought out a really good Brooklyn singer, Sharon Jones, to tear through a few more classics, Knock On Wood, In The Midnight Hour, Try (A Little Tenderness), Sitttin on the Dock of the Bay. Anton Fig from the Letterman show drumming with them. That music and summer is pretty much a perfect match.
And then, a good little bar near me had as a special tonight, a six pack of Guinesss Extra Stout bottles to go for 5 BUCKS!!!! (I'm enjoying my second one right now)

Well, to hear those songs and see them played by the people who played on the original records..........you pretty much have to be dead to NOT have a large time. Kinda of neat to be 6 feet away from Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn and see that they were having a large time as well.

If that was Sharon Jones, who's usual band is the Dap Kings, you saw a good show! She's awesome...
I am seeing Booker T myself in about 10 days at an event in Sonoma...okay....I'll fess...a NASCAR race, the Nextel Cup. Long story, and I'm not a NASCAR fan, but it's free and hopefully drinking wine is involved! I saw him about 10 years ago, so good to hear he's still doing a great show.

It was indeed Sharon Jones of the Dap Kings. She did Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding proud. Is your show just Booker T or are the M.G.'s with him (I know he does both)

I actually don't know Scoop -- I thought it was interesting that he was playing prior to the race, and they said "spectators could hear the show all around the track"! Not a priority for most who are there I guess. I'll update you after the event.
I love Sharon Jones -- she whipped a bunch of Canajuns into a bit of a funk frenzy at last year's jazzfest in the city, which is no mean feat, as Calgarians are not easily whipped up! They are bringing her back for this year's folk fest (the lineup isn't anywhere near folk anymore). I don't think it will be the same with a few thousand people huddling on tarps and lawn chairs as the show last year with 300 people.

She is definitely a sparkplug! Even Cropper and Dunn were looking at each other with looks of approval.
Well, with the M.G's or not, it's still Booker T. and like I always say, you gotta see the legends when you get the chance.

Indeed, RT - very fired up for this weekend... Looks to be great weather here in the Big Apple. Here, have a Restoration...;)
speaking of Bars... A very close friend and veteran of many Jazz Fests with me (he was the priest who officiated our wedding vow renewal in the pictures) gave me a gift this past Jazz Fest - a tremendous book. I started it yesterday and stayed up most of the night, not able to put it down. Am 2/3 of the way through and very impressed - "The Tender Bar" by JR Moehringer.
can't recommend it highly enough. speaks eloquently about the communal nature of bars. like this thread...

Hey DT! long time, no see...whatcha been up to????
Well lets see....been working 14-16 hour days (but it has paid off quiet well!). ST is home and got a great job/internship but got rear-ended and totaled my car last week and has been driving me nuts about getting another car so been searching/reserching that crap (never knew how good we had it on the insurance until started comparing the cost for him with comprehensive/collision...damn!) Trying to get things finalized for the Canada NT trip which starts next Sat. so will be out of the country and out of touch with the world for two weeks...all new windows installed in the house...new garage doors installed....new carpeting coming next week...custom curbing coming next week for all our nature/flower areas....adding top soil/mulch/yard work during this desert dryness....basically not much at all.
How 'bout you? Haven't had time to read any posts or find out what is going on in TH land...maybe will get a chance later tonight after teaching ST how to drive a stick....gotta run, but will check in later if ST doesn't kill me....now you know why I'm dinking!!!!

well when you come you gots to let me know so we can "hook up"! The absolute best time to do Disney is the weekend after Thanksgiving. Not a whole lot of people & waiting in lines to do rides .... and most of the time the weather is purrrrrrrfect ... not too hot & never too cold .... but never & I repeat NEVER do Disney during Christmas. You would think(at least we did a few years back) that it would be a slow time but it's really their biggest $$$ making time. You would think(at least we did a few years back) that it would be a slow time but it's really their biggest $$$ making time. Spring is nice but ya gots the spring breakers & summer is just way to effin' hot!
Cheers!
Well that's good to know. I was thinking maybe next Spring but maybe we should just wait till the fall. What about October? How is DW in October? We have a Fall Break.
And how far away do you live from DW?

I'm abouts 1:20 hrs away ... a quick skip & a jump! ya'll can shack up here when ya come! October can still be kinda hot here ... but really that's just my opinion ... I don't think the crowds are bad at that time ... most kids here are in school at that time ... Halloween prolly draws some sort of crowd though ...

Hi y'all!
Hey Rosie... I went to a new hairdresser on the weekend and she had the most fabulous multi-coloured glass chandeliers... all the dangly bits were in purple and gold and green and silver, etc. I immediately thought of you and how you could make one for next year's raffle and how I would win it and how great it would look over a dining room table. Oh, and of course I thought you could sell some too. Cheers.

This past weekend, when I was helping my tattooist friend Jen at her booth during the Sacramento Tattoo Convention - the first tattoo she did on Friday (before she did mine) was a GORGEOUS fleur de lis on a calf. The great person getting that tattoo is another NOLA lover who goes there every year (and who makes beautiful corsets) and it was great fun talking to her about New Orleans.

10 Most Bizarre Beers
Published on 6/20/2007
Beer for Dogs
For beer lovers and thirsty dogs, there is now an option for hanging out together and sharing a brew. Let the party begin. According to newsbbc, "A small brewery in the Netherlands has launched a new beer designed to bring cool relief to thirsty dogs.
Kwispelbier, marketed as "a beer for your best friend", is made from a special brew of beef extract and malt. The beverage is a creation of pet shop owner Gerrie Berendsen, who wanted her dogs to share light refreshments with her after a day's hunting.
The beer is non-alcoholic and fit for human consumption, but costs four times as much as a Heineken. "Kwispel" is the Dutch word for wagging a tail. You can see Benito here, a 5-year-old Chihuahua who lives with the inventor of the beer.
Duff Beer: Homer Simpson's Beer comes true!
Remember Duff Beer? The official sponsor of Homer Simpson drinking sessions is now available thanks to a mexican guy, Rodrigo Contreras Díaz. Produced in Jalisco and distributed only via internet, this limited edition lager beer has been a success, selling over 200 boxes (12 bottles) in 2 weeks. Each box costs around US$ 20 plus shipping.
Beer + Milk = Bilk
A brewery in Hokkaido, Japan recently released a low-malt beer using milk. The idea came from the son of a liquor store who is in the dairy farm industry. After having a problem of discarding milk, he proposed the local brewery to produce the milk beer. As one-third of beer is milk, it is the good way to help local farmers. The beer called “Bilk” came from beer+milk. The taste of beer is like a taste of fruits and it goes well with sweets. Because of its fruity flavor, Bilk hopes to be popular among women.
Beer for the Blind
Leave it to the Germans to find the only unexploited niche in the beer market: the blind! Dusseldorf's Uerige beer, one of the world's finest, is now releasing new bottles with a braille label. Thus, Uerige has created the first beer for the blind. Blind activist (and beer drinker) Joana Zimmer rejoiced, "You often have no idea what's about to go in your mouth. But with this bottle you are clearly told what it is - and that's fabulous."
Champagne Beer
Champagne Lager (Or Champagne Beer as it is known in the US) sets out to tempt and tease your taste buds with its combination of beer and Champagne. Flying in the face of drinking convention, which states that 'grapes and hops' should not be drunk in the same session, this new drink was enthusiastically sampled and approved by hundreds of the festival attendees. Available in 750ml bottles, the retail price it's around $12.
Pizza Beer
A Chicago-area man who operates a brewery in his garage has experienced a breakthrough in culinary brewing -- the creation of pizza beer. Tom Seefurth said his pizza brew, which one Aurora, Ill., restaurant now serves as Mamma Mia Pizza Beer, contains tomatoes, garlic, basil and oregano, giving it a taste and smell reminiscent of its solid-food namesake, the Chicago Tribune reported Monday. Seefurth said his experiments in culinary brewing also led to the development of salsa beer, curry beer and even oatmeal raisin cookie beer. He said his largest obstacle in getting people to drink his creations is convincing them not to prejudge. The pizza beer is not for the Saturday night bowling alley, Seefurth said. But it will appeal to a wide range of people if they keep an open mind.Seefurth said he is seeking a deal with a regional brewery to get the beverage on tap in local Italian restaurants.
Beer for Kids
The Japanese company behind Kidsbeer, a nonalcoholic beverage that looks like the real thing, is apparently shipping 75,000 bottles of the stuff a month. Satoshi Tomoda, president of the beverage maker, said: "Children copy and mimic adults. "If you get this drink ready on such occasions as events and celebrations attended by kids, it would make the occasions even more entertaining." The Kidsbeer label captures a nostalgic mood as it was modeled after classic beer labels. "Even kids cannot stand life unless they have a drink," reads the product's advertising slogan.
Vitamin Enhanced Beer
Stampede beer is enhanced with B vitamin, folic acid and other essential vitamins, according to creator Lawrence Schwartz. "Stampede is the first Vitamin-enhanced beer," Schwartz said. Schwartz said the federal government told him that he cannot claim the beer is good for drinkers and can't list vitamins on the labels because it would be an implied health claim.
Free Beer, as in "Open Source"
A Danish beer company has released its recipe hoping drinkers will hack and customize the beer. This idea is inspired by open sourced software. The first patch of 2850 large bottles sold out immediately. "FREE BEER" is a beer which is free in the sense of freedom, not in the sense of free beer. The project, originally conceived by Copenhagen-based artist collective Superflex and students at the Copenhagen IT University, applies modern free software / open source methods to a traditional real-world product - namely the alcoholic beverage loved and enjoyed globally, and commonly known as beer. FREE BEER is based on classic ale brewing traditions, but with addded Guaraná for a natural energy boost. The recipe and branding elements of FREE BEER is published under a Creative Commons (Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5) license, which means that anyone can use the recipe to brew their own FREE BEER or create a derivative of the recipe. Anyone is free to earn money from FREE BEER, but they must publish the recipe under the same license and credit our work. All design and branding elements are available to beer brewers, and can be modified to suit, provided changes are published under the same license ("Attribution & Share Alike")
World's Strongest Beer: 25% Alchohol and $110 Per Bottle
A brewery in the States has launched the world's strongest beer. The drink - at 25% alcohol - is six times more powerful than a normal beer and twice the strength of a bottle of wine. And at £56 a bottle, Samuel Adams Utopias is also among the world's most expensive. Just 8,000 of the limited edition 24 oz tipple, sold in a copper kettle, have been brewed by the Boston Beer Company. Brewery founder Jim Koch said the beer was designed to be enjoyed slowly as an after dinner tipple.

That's a little like a "Black Velvet" - which is like a "Black and Tan", but with champagne/sparkling wine instead of Bass Ale . . . it's not terrible. ;)

Can I get some ginger ale? Maybe some saltines? :)
For my non-alcohol refreshment, I swear by Canada Dry Lemon/Lime Seltzer. Tastes great, quenches the thirst and no calories.

That actually sounds good. I don't much like ginger ale but the ginger is tummy settling . . .

Well, I can't vouch for the tummy settling with my stuff, but I can vouch for how good it tastes. Just enough flavor and very natural tasting.

And hey, did my Yanks hold on to beat the Giants. It was 3-0 last I saw. I root for the Giants as well, (except against the Yanks) and they pissed me off against the Red Sox. Talk about rolling over. Jeez could they maybe win ONE game against Boston fer crissakes?!?!

Wow, I actually have no idea what's going on in baseball (if Jeff were here I'm sure I'd be forced to be up to date right now) ;) I don't have a lot of hope of the Giants beating anyone though!!

The Giants have been my favorite team since I was old enough to know what a baseball was. But between the earthquake series and the ^&%$#) rally monkey, rooting for them has been a lesson in "close but no cigar."

oh gurl! I feel your pain! I had the sickeness with all 3 of my kids and only wish I would have found these things before hand!

they really did work for me and also trying to keep some food in my belly most of the time helped too. I remember with my first I would keep saltines by the bed so that before I could even open my eyes in the morning I would pop in a saltine or two ... it worked if I didn't start salivating first ... if that happened forget it I was huggin the comode ALL day! blech! Hopefully it will pass soon!

Hey Lis, you the only one in here tonight? Self-Serve bars are the best. Hey the Celts drafted Glen "Big Baby" Thomas out of LSU. I think he will be coming to Boston from LA just before I will be leaving for LA from Boston. How is your impending move going?

Yup - me, myself and I . . . I'm glad you've joined me though - it's not that much fun to dink alone ;)
Seriously??!! The Celts got Big Baby?? Woo to the Hoo . . . they might just make an appearance in the higher levels of the NBA East standings now!! :D
The impending move is going well - I just need to wrap up some personal stuff up here, which should be done the first week in August, but I'm also going to be going to my first Burning Man at the end of August . . . so I'm thinking I'll be driving to NOLA in early September. Got a place to stay, working on landing a job now.
