Sounds like fun Rosey -- hey Scoopy!

If you're pouring, I'll have a tall GnT with lots of ice -- it was a hot one today at the Calgary Folk Festival. Posted this in another thread, about the New Orleans element this weekend....

"I saw Henry (Butler) twice this weekend at the Calgary Folk Festival -- he did say he hoped one of the volunteers would let him drive a golf cart! He had the workshop crowds eating out of his hands, the Henry Butler combination of charm and awe-inspiring piano does it every time. The New Orleans Social Club had everyone dancing upfront at mainstage last night -- man, Ivan was on fire, which sort of surprised me, because up here, he could prolly mail it in and everyone would still be amazed!

John Boutte was up for his second year and again, wowed everyone. He is so fantastic in workshops, urging everyone one, and always picking the right song to follow what's just been played by someone else on stage.

PF Sloan was in a workshop this aft with John, Henry and Watermelon Slim -- PF wrote Eve of Destruction -- he performs it and John follows up with Sing, Sing, Sing. Very nice!"

It was a great fest -- Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Bettye Lavette, Watermelon Slim all highlights.

I am parched!

Good luck with the interview Kitten... the fun goes without saying! Scoop, just keep a bucket handy!

My girl Jack is in the wars again. The drama that poor hound goes through! She has torn some ligaments in her hind leg and I've had to enclose them (Bert the Fat Beagle is NOT happy) in a fairly small space for the day. I left work early to check on her and she must have felt good 'cos she bounded out and headed straight up the hill (hence the enclosure). Half way up she's realised that was a dumb thing to do and is obviously in pain again, sat down and decided not to move. So I'm off mountain climbing... bourbon in hand of course!

Hi to everybody else too!!

Hey Amy! Hope all is well in your new locale and with the itty-bitty unnamed newbie ;)

The colors that the pumpkins will now come in are Mardi Gras (purple, green and gold...duh) Sunrise (yellow body with red and glitter highlights) Harvest (green body with yellow and glitter highlights) Midnight (black with gold glitter highlights)and we are going to work on some different ones when I get back..maybe Ocean (blue/green with glitter );)

I won't be around for Festgiving--major bummer--got a show in Pensacola. I will be around for VooDoo. When are you planning on coming down, or is it too early to tell?

Say Hi to Jeff for me...

Thanks for your concern about Jack. She's still feeling sorry for herself and both hounds had a thorough check-up today. Poor ol' Jack has arthritis and Bert the Fat Beagle is way too fat, so medication for Jack and a diet for Bert. Oh, and a big fat medicinal bourbon for me!

Yay Lester! Now you just need a few years of sweat and bulldust to break it in!

Oh.

They didn't tell me that when I bought it.

As long as the sweat can come from being in the sun at festivals, I can handle that. But, where am I going to find bulldust in New York?

BTW, please remind me to tell you during JF08 the story about how I traded a Marine Corps Ka-Bar fighting knife to an ANZAC soldier for his slouch hat in Vietnam during 1965. Of course I didn't understand the term ANZAC then.

Gee thanx Scoop. ;) Missed you my Oz!

Yes, I'm home and the beach was goooooooorgeous. It was extremely HOT AS HELL there, or at least that's what I thought till I got home cause it's worse here! The water was beautiful and clear and cool. Jellyfish were a bit of a pain sometimes. The weather was beautiful, only one cloudy day and that was fine...one rainy morning and that was fine too. The kids had a blast with all the other kids around and we had a great time with friends and plenty of dinks. We went to a waterpark one day, which was a blast, and one of the guys we were with was laughing by the afternoon saying, "OMG I'm in worse shape than I thought, I've been sitting on my shaky hands half the day cause I haven't had any alcohol yet." Very very relaxing and long week!

Indeed, one my fondest memories of my Dad is me from a little kid till even after college when I lived at home for a bit, is putting Bugs on the tube, having my Dad walking into the living room, look at the T.V. and go "Ah, watching the educational channel again?" And then sitting down and cracking up along with me. They were a big part of his life as well, only he saw em on the big screen before the movies started.

That's SO like some of my fondest memories . . . spending summers in Georgia with my grandparents, and on Saturday mornings my Granddad would come into the den and sit in his big recliner with me squished in there to the side - and we'd both sit and watch Looney Tunes (Bugs being our favorite) and laugh, and laugh. :D

Also, he too, had been able to see them as shorts on the big screen - which was cool. :)

I'll be seeing the Creole Cowboys for the first time tomorrow evening. The show will be in an old historical landmark opera house. That should be an interesting contrast.

Business is good. Starting to fill orders from the wholesale show last month. Lots of pumpkins! Business should pick up between now and Thanksgiving, so we are happy.:D

For your morning appetites.....
I give you...fried latte!!!!????!!!
(Swag,this is from your neck of the woods;) )

DALLAS (AP) -- The entries in this year's Big Tex Choice Awards could entice State Fair visitors back to the deep fryer for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

There are Deep Fried Lattes for a morning jump-start, plus fried chili pie, fried guacamole, and a range of crispy desserts including Fried Cookie Dough.

The third annual Big Tex Choice Awards contest on Labor Day tests the fair grub ingenuity of State Fair of Texas concessionaires. Past Big Tex awards have offered nonfried options, but none of this year's seven entries escaped the fryer.

"I think they're good products," said Ron Black, the fair's senior vice president of food service and novelties. "We've got experienced concessionaires, and their products all taste really good."

Michael Levy will debut his family's new Deep Fried Latte, which is a fried pastry topped with cappuccino ice cream, caramel sauce, whipped cream and instant coffee powder.

"We have gained about 10 pounds trying this. I'm not kidding," Levy said. "I've probably eaten 300 of these trying to get it right."

Concessionaire Allan Weiss is offering up Zesty Fried Guacamole Bites, a variation on the Fried Avocados he created last year. The bites are a scoop of guacamole, breaded, fried and served with ranch dressings or salsa.

"The Fried Avocado went over so well, and I think people like guacamole even more than they like avocado," Weiss said.

Gigi White invented Country Pride Peach Cobbler on a Stick, which is a peach cobbler with dumplings rolled in pastry dough and fried, and then covered in brown sugar and cinnamon and skewered. It's this year's only entry on a stick.

"I'm a food engineer," White said. "You really got to work it."

The other entries include Fernie's Fried Chili Frito Burrito, Mama's Fried Sweet Potato Pie and B.W.'s Original Fried Banana Pudding.

"I'm not sure we have another Fried Coke," Black said, referring to the smash hit of last year's State Fair. The dish has been imitated at fairs across the country.

Able Gonzales Jr., the creator of Fried Coke, conceded he may never invent an equal.

"I don't think I be able to beat that type of excitement again," said Gonzales, the chef behind this year's Fried Cookie Dough. "That was crazy."

The fair opens Sept. 28.

Congrats!!!! A milestone. What a capper to what I hope was a good weekend!

Hey I posted this recipe before but I just made it again and it's so friggin good.

I sent to Amyloves and she said the way it was a little sweet for her with the grapes. I just cook for me obviously I cut the qty of grapes and chicken (maybe 1/2 lb of grapes, 2 thighs, half the butter but left the lemon the same and put threw some more garlic in the mix) VERY GOOD, sauce tangy, but when you bite into the grapes yum, nice balance. Experiment but try it. It's really good, with a nice side of broccoli.

ROASTED LEMON CHICKEN WITH RED GRAPES

Ingredients:

4 to 5 pounds chicken drumsticks and thighs (bone in) / or 1 whole chicken cut into pieces
1 clove garlic, halved
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
2 teaspoons finely grated lemon zest
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 pounds seedless red grapes
1 teaspoon sugar

Method:

1. Preheat over to 425 degrees. Rinse chicken and pat dry with paper towels. Rub the chicken pieces all over with the cut sides of the garlic clove. Place chicken in a large bowl.

2. In a small bowl, whisk together 2 tablespoons of the melted butter, the lemon zest, and lemon juice; season generously with salt and pepper. Pour the butter mixture over the chicken pieces and toss to coat.

3. In a separate bowl, toss together the grapes, the remaining two tablespoons melted butter, and the sugar. Season the grapes with salt and pepper. Arrange the grapes in the bottom of a 9-by-13 baking pan.

4. Place the chicken on top of the grapes. Roast, without turning, for 40 to 45 minutes or until chicken is cooked through and the juices run clear when chicken is pricked with a fork.

Makes 4 to 6 servings

Sorry ScoopeyDoo, I can't do the grapes, but couldn't you use olives minus the sugar & maybe a little evol?

ScoopJohnD
09-03-2007, 09:07 PM
I would think.....maybe throw another veggie or two in the mix. I know I've done a simple one with chicken, onion, red pepper and zucchini. Toss the veggies with olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper, put the chicken on top with some Italian seasoning and throw it in the oven. I'm sure olives could be added to that.

Paul Prudohmme has a shrimp and rice soup with olives and tomato and string beans and diced ham and other stuff that is unbelievable. Asopao de Camerones, it's in his Seasoned America cookbook. Too involved to type out now.....(not hard to cook, just a ton of ingredients....3 or 4 different ground chile peppers etc) but man, I've made it and it's REALLY good.

It's an ANZAC Day tradition, but played in most country towns after horse race days and a few casinos. Pub carparks too, I suspect.

3 pennies;
'tosser' selects 2 of the 3 pennies and tosses them high in the air;
punters bet on either heads or tails (whatever side of the penny is facing up on landing);
both coins have to be the same... 2 heads or 2 tails;
if coins land as 'odds' (one of each) then it's a void toss and you keep going;
tosser tosses until he throws tails... then he's out and a new tosser comes in to the ring;

And all through the land you hear the call... H-e-a-d 'em up!

Wish I could have found a picture of a crowded two up ring... great fun! Anyway... here's the wood thing (kip) you toss/spin the coins from.

Not a drinking game, but certainly a game played after much drinking! It's illegal (apart from casinos) except on ANZAC Day.

Found the rules....
Rules

Two up is played by players who surround a ring and take turns at being the 'spinner'; 'come in spinner' being the call for another spinner to come forward into the ring. The game is managed by a 'boxer' who oversees the game and betting and a 'ringy' or ringkeeper who looks after the coin tosses in the ring. The spinner offers a bet, which is matched. He then tosses two coins up into the air using a paddle known as a 'kip'. If the coins are both heads (Heads) he wins, if they are both tails (Tails) he loses and if they are one of each (Odds) he throws again. The boxer takes a commission out of the kitty that the spinner wins. The other punters place side bets. [1]

M. G. Heuston, a WWI veteran, described a game that he ran. The spinner needed to toss Heads three times to win, with his bet having to be matched before each throw. Side bets were held on whether the spinner would toss Heads or Tails and 'tail betters' would bet 3/1 against two Heads. The spinner could choose to bet for Tails instead or play sudden death with three coins so that there were no Odds. [2]

In casino play the players gamble against the house and the rules vary along a similar theme. At Star City in Sydney, two-up was removed in October 2003 due to budget cutbacks brought in by Tabcorp, leaving one of Australia's largest casinos without the iconic game. The spinner needed three Heads to win and was paid 7.5/1. Tails or five Odds in a row was a loss. Other players could place side bets on Heads or Tails. The five Odds are the odds in favour of the House which are 3.4% against the Spinner and 3.1% against side bets. [3]. At Conrad Jupiters on the Gold Coast, the spinner is required to get five heads in a row to win. A loss is three Odds in a row, or Tails. With Odds, all bets are frozen, which means that no-one can change or remove their bets, and new players are not permitted to join. Conrad Jupiters no longer advertises two-up, and is now owned by Tabcorp as well.

Interesting....
Gotta get some sleep....g'nite Ozzie....

It's too easy Kitten. After the races you find a ring, decide whether you're backing heads or tails, wave your money up in the air until someone takes your bet and then you scream for your team. Collect your winnings and all is right with the world.
