We are staying on Canal and are planning on renting a car for a day and driving around. The hotel is going to charge us $29 a day to park, (which I will pay if I have to) But, are there any parking garages that we can park at for just a few hours (not over night) anywhere on the other side of Canal from the FQ? Or is maybe metered street parking the way to go?
Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Metered parking is usually available, but I think it has a 2 hour limit. The good news is that last year the meters were not in effect after 6 PM. I stayed at the Pere Marquette and parked overnight on the street. Had to get up and "feed the meter" at 8 AM, but then could go back and sleep or relax until 10.

If you are not needing to park overnight I would think that you would have no problem finding a place to put the car for far less than what the hotel is asking.
I parked once in same situation at a secure garage at St. Charles and Common Street (one block off Canal) that charged by the hour so was much cheaper than the day rate at my hotel. There were a bunch of them though and you should have no problem finding something convenient.
The fine for an unpaid meter is just $20. I don't know how long you can park before they give you a second ticket, but if you just get the one, that's a $9 savings over the hotel garage.

I recall something about the Harrah's casino parking garage being affordable, even free if you spend some 'time' there...

There are some Central Parking lots near Canal and Poydras that only charge $20 for overnight (or per 24 hrs.) but there's no in and out.

fyi - FQ/CBD street parking: if it doesnt have a meter (harder to figure out these days with the centralized meter machines and receipts on the windshield), - it is likely illegal and you will be towed. dont risk it.

You can park as long as the sign says .... if it's 1 hour parking, they can give you a ticket every hour the meter is expired.
Does NOPD boot? After a few parking tickets, the most expensive boot you'll ever pay for can be applied.

Does NOPD boot?
Yes.:)
Also, NPY, try your local AAA club. One time they helped me find a place to park my car in NYC while I was in Greece for a month.

Yeah, I was going to say, iirc, if you go in and play for a bit, I think they'll validate for free/discounted parking. Might be an option.

Excuse my ignorance as a virgin fester, but Is Canal & Poydras in the FQ?? We are gonna have to use this option because of our hotel location/rental car situation!! And do they usually get packed/lot full at night?? Any advice is appreciated!!

Do you mean between Canal and Poydras? What cross streets?

Canal is the western(?) edge of the FQ.....Poydras is next to the Dome and runs down to the river by the Hilton.

You can take the ferry across da River to Algiers Point and park there for free. 5 minute ride on the boat, best views of the city. Street parking easy to find. It costs $1 to take the car back on the ferry.

Thanks Rosetree...Is anywhere on Canal a good spot?? I know that traffic in the FQ can get hectic, so I want to find a way to bypass the traffic and use one of those local Central Parking locations without actually driving through the heart of the FQ for our nightly trips out and about...

There's one on Poydras and Magazine. That's the one I used. I left my car during the day so not sure how full they get at night but I'm betting they do get full.

There is one between Canal and Poydras (besides the one I used) but it was small and always full. And no, I don't remember the street. I just drove around. There are several, though.

Thanks Pokerchick!! One last question, would it be wise to use this method, over parking at City Park and leaving the rental there and just taking a short cab ride to the FQ?? Can you even leave cars parked overnight at City Park?? THX everyone here has been sooo helpful!!
