It is much to my dismay that I have to adhere to my very strict competition (bodybuilding/fitness) diet during this visit to NOLA & Jazzfest. I'll need to bring some of my own food, i was thinking about a couple ziplock baggies of protein powder, and a couple baggies filled with BBQ'd chicken breast. Maybe a bit of broccoli too LOL. All of which i can fit in my shoulder-purse thingy.
Anyway, I just looked over the prohibitions list and it mentions no coolers, and there is a mention of liquids. But (unless i missed it) it doesn't state anywhere about a prohibition on outside food.
So is it cool to bring your own food? Or do i have to stuff my bra full of chicken? LOL

You can bring your own food. :)

Hahahaah thanks pokerchick. That was easy! ;-P
Yes, outside food is allowed (but not drinks). Occasionally, security may be misinformed about this and tell you know; if this happens, easiest thing is to just walk away, wait a minute, and try a different line.

you may be able to find a few things that fit your needs like grilled chicken or fish from the congo square area. and that is dedication, girlie!

Tons of good protein at the fest. Give yourself a day or two and run a couple of extra miles. As much as I eat and as big as I am, I always lose weight at the fest. I guess it's the large amount of walking I do everyday there.

Thanks again for the replies! I can't tell you how much this is gonna be Hell-on-Earth for me hahahah. i love food, especially all the amazing things available in NOLA!!!! But i have a lot riding on this competition this year and my choice was to go to jazzfest and diet/train, or not go at all. It wasn't a hard choice LOL but it will be the truest test of my willpower.
That's great to know that protein is available---grilled chicken and fish especially (provided it's not smothered in oil and butter LOL). I didn't know i could find this in the congo square! Thank you!
And swag, thanks for that little tip as well!
A hard change from last year, for sure.
okay try not to laugh too hard but last sunday i ate THREE soft-shell crab poboys. The best $30 i *ever* spent!

the vietnamese booth in heritage square has had grilled shrimp on a stick in the past but it's not listed this year. might still be available. oh, and there are steamed veggies with the food in congo square.

Two words: Jama Jama
The food page has vegetarian items highlighted with an asterisk. You should do fine, though it would probably get boring if you go to the Fairgrounds for all 7 days.

IMPRESSED WITH YOUR ABILITY TO NOT EAC REAL NOLA FOOD
Well I'll have to report *after* the trip and see how successful i actually was at diet adherence LOL. I do get one cheat meal. Which means i have to eat a lot of different things at that one meal if i wanna hit everything on the list hahahhhaha. Honestly dieting in NOLA is like, my worst nightmare. It's just my choice was to go and diet, or not go at all. It's my ultimate test of will power.
On a side note, cardio up & down St. Charles seems a lot more interesting than my current gym treadmilling!
Yesterday, nola.com posted a blog that pointed back to this 2009 article on eating healthy at the Fest.

Sadly, while most Jazzfest food returns year after year, two of their "healthy" picks will no be served this year.
Congo Square's Caribbean Fruit Salad is the best healthy bet at the Fest, with mango, papaya, pineapple, strawberries, apple, and nuts, and just the slightest bit of lemon juice and honey.
...
Smitty's Oysters on the Half Shell and Shrimp Cocktail are good sources of lean protein...

goodness that pic looks amazing.
In all honesty, if i wasn't competing in July, i'd tell Healthy Eating to fukkit LOL after all, the food is part of the experience. Sadly though, it's either stick to my competition diet, or cancel my trip. This will probably be the hardest test of will power i have ever been involved in LMAO. On a side note---i need to stop looking at food porn pics of all the jazzfest & NOLA culinary delights. I'm already huunnngggreeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!

Yet one more reason to support WWOZ and buy a Brass Pass! More fruit in their tent than you can shake a spoon at...

and after all that fruit, you'll really need their port-o-potties.

Miss Silly - I admire your dedication, but you will still have fun being "healthy" at Fest. A few years ago I had to Fest sans alcohol - which is really sacriligous. I almost cried every time I ordered a virgin bloody mary at Liuzzas.
On a separate note, I do love the Jama Jama, but I do think it is heavily laden with butter, which is probably why it is so good. I don't know this 100%, but one of my Fest Friends is lactose intolerant and loves Jama Jama but she pays the price after eating it!

I agree that the excellent Jama Jama probably has enough butter to harden the arteries of an entire small Guatemalan village, but it is NOT made with chicken stock, as I asked them specifically about that.
The eggplant is also exceptional, and they will gladly leave the crawfish sauce off, or put it on the side.
I don't do meat/poultry, (for the past 15+ years) so I always ask about soups and sauces that I am unfamiliar with, to see if chicken or beef broth (or lard) is used, and most places are really upfront about it; if the server doesn't know, they will gladly ask the kitchen staff....
That said, a virgin Bloody Mary is something I am having a tuff time wrapping my head around....;)

Yep, always a great choice, and they are also still pretty tasty when eaten cold back at the hotel around 4am....
Are you a non-meat person as well?

I, too, shakes head a little embarrased, admit, I'm lactose intolerant too... I usually just ask if there's any dairy, cheese, or butter before ordering something. Most folks working the lines will know, or find out for you, but if there's any question, I skip it. Had a bad experience, didn't ruin my fest, but it was close! (tmi, I know)
Anyhow, anyone know if there's a list out for what food items are vegan/vegetarian/lactose free? It'd be cool if there was, if not, maybe I'll make that my goal this year...to classify ALL the food at fest!
Vegetarian options are marked on the official food list.

LOL Ludlows---i'm like your friend. I've done the enjoy-now/pay later thing with foods that involve dairy. Although when it's expected, it's easier to handle. WHen you don't realize you've consumed dairy until you are uh, experiencing sides, well then, not so fun LOL.
UUUGGGHHH I majorly messed up on my training diet this weekend. (i have a serious love affair with the peanut butter jar.) I'm a little behind schedule in terms of what my physique is doing so i think fear and stress about being ready on time for my comp is going to be a huge motivation to stick to my diet plan LOL. Sigh. FML.
At least there will be music!

They NEED to add a Vegan listing, as it's a popular dietary option these days. Plus, it'll help those with dairy issues figure things out...
