I just noticed that we will be down in Nola for both Cinco De Mayo and the Kentucky Derby.

What do people do down there for Cinco De Mayo? Is there anything going on, or will I have to just drink tequila that day? Something I am totally fine doing.

Also, the Kentucky Derby is on Sunday May 9th, and I have a die hard Derby fan coming along with me. She really wants to watch the race. We will be at Fest that day, so I guess I'm wondering if we can leave fest for a few, watch the Derby then come back in or is re-entry not allowed? Should we just walk to Liuzza's to watch it?

The Derby is on Saturday May 7.

Fest usually shows the derby live on the big screen at the Lagniappe Stage (the Fairgrounds is a horse track, after all), but it's the track feed, not the TV broadcast, so there's no audio and no horse names shown. But if you know the numbers of your horses, you can follow along just fine.

Re-entry to the fest is only allowed if you have the Brass Pass, Gala Pass, or one of the VIP packages.

Small sacrifices like that are what builds character in a person.....

The Iguanas (a great New Orleans-based band with Mexican flavor) have a Cinco De Mayo party show scheduled at the 12 Bar on 5/5, where I would bet you could find one or two people willing to help you drain the last dregs of the ol' Patron bottle!!!

(I just went up to hear Los Lobos play a free gig yesterday, and ran into a bunch of old friends at the show. I don't think I will be able to drink any tequila again for a long, LONG time....;))

Ya know that the last time Jimmy Buffet played it was Kentucky Derby Day and he had a horse running. While he was on stage they showed the race on the big screens! He is playing on the same day again! Maybe they will show it again!

In 09 I was given a VIP ticket, and the VIP lounge at the grandstand had broadcast of the Kentucky Derby were up on two of the TV screens. They also had a couple of computers set up for internet so those of us with wagering accounts could get out fix.

Last year, I camped out a concession stand in the grandstand on the second floor. Got there about an hour before the race...was the only one. By the time I pulled my head out of the form it was standing room only.

Hook up with me 'cause I NEVER miss the Derby! FYI, no luck on finding Mint Juleps.

It turns out that the derby is on Saturday, not Sunday.(Thanks for the heads up again Swag) We just so happen to be skipping the fest on that day, so we will just stagger into where ever we are to watch it.

Thanks everyone for the info.

Don't see it happening...and he doesn't have any ponies in that number to my knowledge. On a thread from last year I brought up showing the race. I can't remember all the input but was told that they stepped away from doing that after the tragedy in '08 Derby.
