I have tickets for the first weekend and I'm so excited. This will be my first Jazz Fest. I have never been to the area before. The closet I have been is to Jennings and I'm going there when I leave to pick up my three wonderful grandchildren.
The closet hotel that I could afford... (four nights including taxes, fees-$431.23)
Days (Inn) Hotel Metairie-New Orleans
3400 South. I-10 Service Rd W
Metairie, LA 70001 US
Can you tell me about the area? Safe? Is this hotel far from fairgrounds? Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Patty:)

You will probably have to pay to park in the area. folks charge for yard parking and a couple of the area schools park folks too. look at swag's site to learn A LOT about fest. www.swagland.com

Definitely check out swagland for an unbelievable amount of useful info. One area in particular that will really help out is SWAGS travel/Priceline page. I do think you will be able to get a room downtown for what you will pay at the Days Inn if you use priceline (it might be even less with a much better hotel). You will have to be patient though.

I have stayed in surburbs, Metaire or the airport a couple of times for a great rate that I got thru priceline or hotwire. You will need to rent a car, but you can drive into City Park near Fairgrounds, park there for free and take a bus shuttle of a few minutes for a reasonable amount. Shuttle takes you right into Fairgrounds. It worked for me because I spent all day at Fest and then headed back to hotel immediately after, found some really nice places to eat out of the city. I would not recommend driving around the city.
You can park in some city parking lots for a reasonable amount,( you need to get there early before they fill up) and take the trolley or buses to get around town.

Swag's site, www.swagland.com has great info.
Enjoy your first Fest and when in doubt as to which act to catch, hit the Gospel Tent, which rocks all day long or the Economy Tent where they play Traditional Jazz.

Just wanted to say thank you for all the great info.
I have been doing some mapquesting to find the City Park and fairgrounds.
Husband and I are traveling by car from North Carolina so it will be late Thursday night. I don't like coming into an area at night that I am not familiar with but I have to stay with my budget and shave off a day.
Looking forward to the 1st weekend and wishing I could hit the lotto
and stay for two weeks...lol. I have gone thru and read alot of the past postings and y'all have made it sound like such a blast!
Again, thanks for all the info.
Patty;)
