o.k, I'll play.

Only in town for 2nd weekend, but Mr. Soul & I will be at Howlin' Wolf on 5/04 for the Rendezvous. Only other tix we have are for Corinne Bailey Ray on 5/05 at Tips. I'm fighting the urge to get tix for Ivan & Dumpstaphunk on Sunday night. At our age, I'm not sure we'll still be breathing, much less going to shows. But if we're breathin' that's prolly where you'll find us.!

I can pull three 24 hours at 50 yrs but I will pay the price when I get home. My daughter asked since we are getting home Monday shortly after school "does this mean we can have family dinner?" I told her no way!!! Pops and me are sleeping!! I figure I can sleep from 4 or 5 AM until 10 that is plenty for this lady. I may be getting older but still have some endurance! You are funny. The thing with NO, I don't want to miss what I can't see at home in DC.

Thanks Belle....you make me blush :o ...hope to meet you too. I understand wanting to do and see everything you can. My first few years, we didn't know anyone...we used to run around after the Fest trying to get to all the restaurants we'd heard about...rush off to some concert or show. That was great and had a great time doing it. Then, we fell in with the Kats and made some long lasting friends....friends that I usually only get to see once a year. So now, I take the time to savor those moments. Frankly, one of the reasons we went 12 years straight was to renew those friendships every year. We finally decided to take a year off to spend our vacation time and money doing something different. Then, last year, it was a work issue that kept us from coming back. So, I guess as I get older and have sampled a lot of what New Orleans has to offer, I don't feel I have to do all and see all anymore. But that's just me! :) (I know...thread drift!)

Did you mean to leave out Sunday, the 29th?

Silly PC - that's the all nighter - I bet Corona is just thinkin' Saturday is going to bleed into Sunday....it's the dawgs, followed by the howlin' wolf show, and then who knows what the hell we'll end up doin !!!

In case anyone is tryin' to decide what to do on Sunday the 29th - we're heading to Carrollton Station that night to see a school buddy of my husband - Jim McCormick - and anyone else playing that night.

I want a late late show for all nights! Suggestions please

First weekend late night suggestions as per your request:
Fri -
1) Dumpstaphunk @ Howlin' Wolf -Great funk band with 2 bass players - great New Orleans feel - love the originals and they do a great Sly and the Family Stone cover
2) Eric Lindel @ dba- Sings blues/soul that make you happy to be alive.
3) Vinyl @Maple Leaf - they play this gig every year and it is usually one of the highlights of fest if you are willing to hang until 6AM (may sell out)
4) Soulive @ Tips - I'm not a big fan of this jam band (too noodly IMHO) but I'm clearly in the minority (may sell out)

Sat -
1) Galactic @Tips - One of my favorite first weekend shows (will sell out)
2) Vidacovich, Dillon, Houser, Skerik @ Maple Leaf - Improv jazz and funk - great musicians, but I don't get that kind of jazz yet

Sun -
1) Underdawgs @Le Bon Temps Roule - Great new New Orleans band
2) New Mastersounds @ Blue Nile - Funk band from England - never seen them, sounds good on line

That's my 2 cents. By the way, I wish I was as prepared and plugged in my first fest, but even though I wasn't, I had a great time. Jazzfest is the only place that I feel is a no lose proposition.

That Krasno, Ivan show is very intriguing!

Yes, got tickets for that one. Krasno is one of my favorite guitarists as far as solos go -- he adds so much energy to a show. And I'll see Ivan any night -- there are better B3 players and better singers, but no one exudes more joy than Ivan. I'm sure that if you don't go, Krasno will sit in everywhere.

I think we're gonna chill and bum around Sunday, put the kiddies to bed and head out to the Bon Temps around midnight to see the Underdawgs like we did during Mardi Gras...that's why I left it out. VOW is Satuday night at 1 am right?

Correct! :D

I would never try to keep up with Festvet! :D My only confirmed so far is Mofro/Anders/ Eric Lindell on the 26th at Tips. May just spend more time with old friends that I only see once a year, eating and drinking after the Fest.
haha. I'm finding it hard to keep up with my ambitions these days too. That turnin 50 last month was tough! Will see ya at Tip's though on the 26th, right after I catch Shannon McNally open for Mr Broussard at Republic.

This thread reminded me of the power of these boards. It makes me think of 2005 when, because of this board and a thread about nightime shows/Robert Randolph and the Family Band, I was able to get front row seats for the Robert Randolph show at the Saenger Theater. May even have been Corona who alerted us all to the presale or whatever was going on that allowed people from these boards to take over the first rows of that show.

I think it just means that theyre playing longer than a normal single band two set show .... DJ Logic is normally in the late night scene, so instead of viewing it as two sets, the owner of the wolf is touting it as two shows/sets ... my guess is its just a long concert

Question: The Wild Magnolias, Bonerama and Kermit are all playing Rock and Bowl on 1st Saturday night...start time is on the calendar for 8:30. I want my girls to see the Wild Maggies more than anything...and a bit of Kermit would be a bonus. I hear the Maggies will likely go on first but I'm wondering what time 8:30 is Nola time....for RnB?

The reason is I'm not missing the Underdawgs at Rays Saturday night....I think doors are 9:00 and I'm predicting a 10-10:30 start for the Underdawgs. Trying to see if I can catch at least the Maggies at RnB and then shoot over to Ray's to catch everyone who are gonna hang out before the VOW gig at Howling Wolf at 1 a.m.

Thoughts????? If I can only pick one....it's the Underdawgs at Rays as planned.....

Do some hotels give you a reduced rate for 10 nights?

funkkjunkie
04-08-2007, 01:39 PM
Yes, mcgregor, some do give discounted rates for long stays AND I had a room booked at Hotel Royal that was $79 on weekdays and 99 on weekends, I think it was. But now i'm at chateau lemoyne, which we got on hotwire or priceline for about 115 a night and that includes taxes, etc. Changed to the lemoyne because hotel royal was only one bed AND lemoyne has lots of THs! And if you're willing to stay out in metarie, you can get great rates.

I saw that, my mecca, and wondered if that was your zig. And both franti late shows are on my longer night show list. I just dont' know how many late shows i'll actually be able to pull off. Just depends on available supplementalization, i guess. And I did just see him in March in Fayetteville.

I envy everyone of you out of towners that are able to do the whole fest and days in between.

I look up to you and one day hope to join the club.

All I have to do is ask off I because but I've never really considered it...until now.

Do some hotels give you a reduced rate for 10 nights?
McGregor, I've been staying at the Residence Inn on St Joseph since it opened in '98. If you stay 14 nights (or more) the rate drops from 189/night to 119/night. Used to be 109 until this year. The room sleeps two couples comfortably if you switch nights between the queen pullout sofabed and the queen bedroom. I usually just stay alone and love the space it provides. Very nice courtyard and pool. Quiet area just around the corner from Howlin Wolf, Emerils and two blocks from 1-10/Crescent City Connection. Parking is under $20/day and even less a couple blocks away it's only $5 for 24hrs. Walking distance to FQ, Howlin Wolf, Republic, Circle Bar, Rusty Nail (formerly Mermaid Lounge). Five minute drive to Tip's along Tchoupitoulas...

not sure how i missed this thread but here goes...

most of the "definites" are really definite, some of the "possibles" are not really possible at all but fun to humor myself with, hahaha. i was bored one night and decided to throw this together. seeing that im staying a stones throw from frenchmen st. i could see hitting a few of those boom boom room presents shows at the blue nile, end the nights(mornings) close to home :) just so many options, it's dizzying.

3 weeks!

I would have been so lost without this board for my first fest....hell, I'd be lost without it now! That was awesome huh Neal? :)

Corona, I can't say what my favorite nighttime show during Fest has been because I have attended too many great ones to decide. But if I had list of the top nighttime shows, that show would be on there - probably even if I had not been in the front row
