So during fest, is it a good idea to just head down to frenchmen street and just see what's up, or is should we already know who we want to see and have tickets bought?

Also, if you look at the grids, Second Saturday, Tipitina's uptown has Dirty Dozen at 9 and Trombone Shorty at 2. Will Dirty Dozen play until 2 then Shorty take over? If I want to see both, do I have to leave then come back or will they let me just stay? How does that work?

Thanks. Just over 2 months. That's like a short jail term. ;)

Heading to Frenchmen just to see what's up is never a bad idea. Venues like Apple Barrel and Spotted Cat don't sell advance tickets, so you'll have options. Also listen for brass bands popping up on the street corners and in the little park.

Not sure about the Tips shows, but since they're ticketed separately they'll probably clear and refill. There's stuff to do in the area during the in-between period though. More knowledgable folks will come along and give you the scoop.

I'd suggest only buying tickets to a couple of can't miss shows and playing the rest by ear.Something else always comes up.

If you really want to go to a Tip's show during Jazz Fest, an advance ticket is advised. Same for the Frenchmen St. clubs that charge...Blue Nile, Snug Harbor. I don't think d.b.a. has any kind of advance ticket but they do charge at the door. Otherwise, Frenchmen St. is good for cruising. Most likely, you'll find something you'll enjoy for free.

Tip's will definitely empty the house when there are two shows a night.

I have to say that Tip's is really stuffing them in these days. There was a line way down the block for Anders Saturday night and no one was turned away. Much as I love the place, it gets a little uncomfortable when it's jammed

One suggestion for between shows...Ms. Mae's is a short 4 block walk up Napolean to Magazine and, though prices recently went up, it's only two dollars a drink, three for a double.

Agree with the idea to only get advance tickets to MUST see shows. Because not only does other stuff come up, but sometimes, you might be so wore down, you can't even make it to a show you already have tickets for. That's only happened once to me, but it did suck eating $40/tickets on an already expensive weekend...

Not too many years ago, Tips used Cattle Gates! to herd the attendees of the first show out immediately after in order to clear the house to set up for show number 2. It was a totally uncalled for, rude and dangerous procedure. I believe Tips had come back down to earth 2 years ago but am wondering if they havn't swung back the other way again now. I bought Instruments and Rads tickets there this year and now I'm a little sorry I did.

I still remember the night we tossed five tickets to Sonny Landreth who was playing at Rock n' Bowl cause we were having so much fun in the Marigny/Quarter. Now if those tickets said 'Meters' on them that would not have happened ( no offense Sonny ). As was said before, only buy tiks to MUST SEE shows !!!
