Any advice on this venue? We'll be taking in the Instruments A Comin show, but have never been to this place.

It is my favorite place in the country to see a show. There is nothing that sets the space apart from other places, but the energy, vibe and history of the room make it special.
It is standing only rectangle with a balcony around the edges of the rectangle. In my opinion, no trip to New Orleans is complete without a visit to Tips.

tips has done so much for the recovery as well...theres a music co op for musicians to learn about the music biz, free computer usage, health care,etc....
theyve provided costumes and rehearsal space for mardi gras injuns...
they have music workshops on sunday afternoons with top new orleans
musicians teaching.....they are part of the lifeblood and soul of the city..
and of course providing thousands of instruments for school kids every year..
also theres an easy to miss little memorial on the neutral ground there,
with a small statue of professor longhair.......its a not2miss stop on
a visit to new orleans...

FYI the Instruments-A-Comin' show is different from other shows at Tips, as it's a benefit. During the daylight hours, there are indoor and outdoor sets, and the Tips Hall of Fame induction takes place outside.
All day, sets are in the vicinity of 1/2 hour. You really can't beat it for catching a variety of New Orleans music on one ticket, complete with Mardi Gras Indians etc. It is a fabulous show.
The entire upstairs is a VIP area catered by local restaurants, requiring a $150 donation to support giving instruments to NOLA school children -- well worth it if you ask me.

Chas, it's one of the best clubs to see music in New Orleans. It's wonderful :) We won't be able to go up to the balcony without VIP tix and I love being up there. BUT, there's tons of stuff going on outside and in...starting at 5:00. We'll be there and a ton of other threadheads will be too!

Chas - you can't (and shouldn't) go to see music in NOLA without making a pilgrimage to Tip's!!!
It's one of the shrines of New Orleans music and I especially love going there for IAC!!
A few Tip's tips:
- Wear comfy shoes and clothes, there's no place to sit on the main floor (and precious little upstairs). So, it's SRO and it can be hella hot inside and then you go outside for some air and there might be a nightime breeze/chill , thus dressing in layers can be great.
- There's no real coat check, so pack light.
- If you can, arrive early and get a good spot nearish the front of the stage (I like over on the right, towards the front end of the right-side bar) - as when it gets crowded (and it will later on), unless you're really tall, you won't be able to see much.
- You can go in and out, which is great to keep the footsies from getting too tired. There's places to sit on some benches, the curb, the neutral zone. Not to mention, there's often some folks cooking food out there, a bar out there, folks to chat with out there and for IAC, the silent auction out there!
- Rub Fess' head when you come into Tip's for good luck.
Have fun!!!

- You can go in and out
That's what I needed to know!
I wanna checkout IAC, but some of our posse has made dinner reservations for 9:30 that night. I am hoping I can go to Tip's, then to dinner, then return to Tip's to catch the end of the show.

Well first, since we have our tickets, I know we won't miss it.
As for geeting up front, if you later go out, won't you be in the back when you re-enter???
It's good to know about the food; since it starts at six and yeah we would get there early. I saw the VIP pass and who some of the cooks are and that got me drooling (Yeah, IT ALL COMES BACK TO THE FOOD). I may still look to try upgrading to the VIP tickets.

Well, it depends on when you're doing your in/out-ing . . . earlier in the evening it's not too crowded inside, due to the concurrent music outside (which ends at 8ish). After the outside events wind down, it tends to get more crowded inside . . . but then they take short breaks in between the acts and most folks use that time to go out for some air.
It's all in the timing, baybee! :D ;)

Guess I'm in the minority here. I'm not a big fan of Tip's. I always say I might as well not buy a ticket, because I always wind up standing on the street because of the overcrowding. And before you say it, I've been to a lot of shows, both in NOLA and out, where it is crowded. Tips, to me, just seems more uncomfortable. That said, I'll be there on the 26th for Anders, Eric Lindell and Mofro. Look for me, I'll probably be the one standing on the curb. :)

I like Tips as well. I always seem to have a good show experience there. I agree that it can get mighty crowded in there, Bill. The shows I have seen have made up for any space restrictions I have encountered.

Tip's deserves all the support they can muster.Just prior to Hurricane Katrina Tip's IAC Program had delivered $350,000 worth of marching band instruments to the New Orleans School System and the delivery was made.If any of you are familiar with the hit movie DRUMLINE it inspired many local youth to join a marching band and Tip's was there for them to fulfill that need.Every teenager and child want's to be part of a group and some of the choices they had before them were to say the least lethal.I SHOULD ALSO ADD THAT THE INSTRUMENTS WERE NOT YET INSURED WHEN KATRINA HIT, things were sketchy on that end since nobody from the School Board could be reached for information. They need the continued support now that they have branched out to more of the music community than before out of necessity. We have been strong advocates of Tipitina's Foundation and will continue to be.Please Come & PARTY!!.It will be a huge block party with silent auctions, entertainment and something for almost everyone.NOLA took a bad hit and the grass roots community groups like Tip's work with those in need directly and were doing so before that awful day.BRING YOUR CREDIT CARDS AND CHECKBOOKS!! Monday APRIL 30th for a real new Orleans Patry.

I believe the French Quarter location has reopened but it is directed more to special events and catered type things and not a nightly club. I think that their is just not enough business to have both locations open everyday/night.
Anybody know TIPS policy on bringing in a camera (*mine is almost a part of me). I see that they have some staff photogs listed on the site but don't see any mention of cameras on the website. I know that night will be packed but what a line up to shoot. (btw I don't need to use a flash).

I have always been fine wiht my camera in there. I was even taking some video's last year. They are pretty cool with that but I tried not to use my flash for the musicians sake.

Had my little camera last year...made some videos from upstairs in the VIP of VOW and others....no problems.
I used to buy advance tickets all the time too, Amy ... you just showed me why I dont any more ... there's always someone who needs to get rid of some because either something else came up or the people they bought extras for bail on them.

For a show at Tips, I'd probably buy early. And Tips uses TicketWeb instead of Ticketbastard, so no giving money to the mob.

Not so fast ... the plague that is ticketmaster has infected ticketweb.

That's weird because when you buy tix from them it doesn't appear to have any affiliation with ticketmaster, meaning the site is different, the packaging is different and the tix don't look the same.
I don't remember my fees being so high as well but maybe they were and I just didn't notice.

They may have bopught them, but the experience is very different.
We had originally purchased the standard tickets and decided to go with the VIP instead. We had Tipitina's contact them to say we wanted to switch and upon purchasing the VIP tickets, the others were credited. Both confirmations can in the email immediately.
As for fees, the service fee here is only $8.25 on the $300 for two tickets. Compare that with TB. I looked at buying 2 Cirque tickets here that were for $248. TB wanted to take on another $30 in fees!!! And I didn't even fall for paying $2.50 to have them delivered via email.

I would think that if the infection had spread, it would have spread first to the fees. Not sure where the Bastard is located, but my TicketWeb tix came from San Francisco.
