Hey there Michiganders (I think...)!!
Everytime I read a thread, it seems like I see more of us. Since the Intro thread is 1300 posts and rising, I thought I'd start this..
1. who are you...
2. where are you from in MI
3. What do you do when you are not festin'
4. How many fests?
5. What weekend?
6. Who are you traveling with?
Here you go for me...
1. My name is Kathy - but have lots of fest names... the PDKK'ers know me as OhioKat, ConnectiKat and CrawfishKat (because I couldn't find a good play on words with Michigan and Kat).
2. I currently live in Royal Oak - a northern suburb of Detroit
3. I count beans... seriously... I'm an accountant at a public accounting firm
4. this will be my 7th fest
5. 2nd weekend BABY!! Leaving Wednesday night - returning Monday morning...(tired and blessed)
6. Bringing a friend from Maryland who has wanted to come for years - its her first fest. I am famous for bringing a "Festal Virgin" every year...
See ya at FEST!!

Shout out to Windsor - I have a great friend who lives on the other side of the river - she isn't ready for Jazz Fest, but I am over there occasionally. Would love to catch up some time...
So - second weekenders - anyone flying down on Wed. 5/2 on the 7 pm NWA flight?!?!? - if so - lets do a pre-JF meet up in the airport!!!

While we're all hanging together, let's send Northworst a note encouraging them to bring back the 9 am flight to New Orleans. I used to be at the Clover Grill by lunchtime! I just hate wasting a whole day waiting to travel. Last year, I took the 6 am hop through Memphis to get in by 10:30am, but I was barely conscious by dinner time. This year, I'm on the 3 pm flight and wondering what it will be like trying to get into town at rush hour. My reward is a 9pm rezzy at Jacques-Imos, but it ain't the same thing.

Are Michigan rolls anything like California rolls? i really like those, but eel rolls are my favorite!
sorry - but if i don't let the puns out i might expode.
My friend Jan, from Ann Arbor (or there's about *), will be attending her 3rd JF - first time for both weekends! She's a retired school teacher who splits her time between Michigan and Telluride, CO. Extremely friendly - i'm sure you all will meet her.
*i met Jan thru an old friend, Nancy, who goes to JF with me occassionally. i'd have to look at the return address on Jan's last note to know the town for sure - and i'm too lazy to climb the stairs right now. but Ann Arbor is the first thing that popped in. senility is wasted on the old!

That would be a great place for a local meet up - I've been the last two years and its really developing into an awesome event. Last year I did a "tally" of my attendance one afternoon (I went more than once)...
2 brass bands
1 iko
2 saints
5 nojf official shirts
1 rock n bowl shirt
Maybe this year I'll see a threadhead shirt!!:D

driving? i'm leaving at 6 a.m. on Wednesday the 2nd ... which puts me in NOLA at about midnight - fine time for a drink I'd say. Last year we left around 9 p.m. and drove straight through on jaeger and jello shots . Started seeing hallucinations around Birmingham ( 7 a.m.). we rolled into town at about 1 p.m. It wasn't a real bad drive, but still our clocks were already out of whack, especially by the time we took showers and hit the town. ended up tent camping in a courtyard in the garden district. i can't wait to outdo myself again this year! anyone have any must see shows for the 2nd weekend?

how many hours from Detroit to New Orleans and what states do you go through EL?
It's about 16.5 hours, including short pit stops, and of course you gain an hour on your way there. We took 75 through Ohio, then 71 to Louisville, Kentucky, 65 through Tennessee, hook up with 59 in Birmingham and take that all the way through Alabama and Mississippi to Louisiana and I-10. It's a GORGEOUS drive, as far as interstate driving goes. And after driving 24 hours to central Florida (which most of us Michiganders and Windsorians(?) have done) it's really not that bad. The best part is the way Mississippi smells - magnolias on the side of the highway. AWESOME!

It is a great drive, especially if you do it in a civilized manner, stop for the night in Tuscaloosa (seemed about right) and drive in the next day. Leaves time for more leisurely eating, and some antique/junk shops along the way. I've only done it once, as I can't seem to find anyone whose willing and it was hard to beat getting up in Michigan and having lunch in the Quarter with the old NW 9am direct out of Detroit. Maybe we can put together a drive for next year.
Meanwhile, you gotta love that 4:30p out of NOLA!

definitely would be nice to fly too! It's fun to be in a completely different place within a two and a half hour flight! But I like the excitement of driving.
Roll call?
Dad rolled Mom in Michigan, hence I was born on the yankee side of the river in Wyandotte. Alas, we moved to Ohio before I started nurery school, so I can't be part of your clique. Go Blue.

hi, ludlows23/ Kathy!
I'm not from Michigan, either, but my first plane trip in my life was to Detroit! :) And, I'm Ohio's quasi neighbor...does that count?
Welcome to the board! I'm 2nd weekender, too, so I hope we have a chance to meet.
I know what you're talking about when you mention the smell of the earth waking up as you go South and the scent of the flowers. Nothing like a good road trip!

Hi Sissy and Ohio :)
Road trip to Nola would definitely be an adventure I would love to make one day but I'd like to do it over 2-3 days so I could explore a bit in a couple of those states. Have done the Windsor-Ft. Lauderdale (and other Fla. cities) numerous times. Macon Georgia is the stop for us. Maybe some day. Road trips are always an adventure lol!

OK, I'll spill. Actually, Tom's been to Fest several times, once or twice even before he joined the band. Tony and Ron are the newbies. Tony played the Patry with us last year, even got to jam with Kermit -- but he didn't get to NOLA until Monday night (and he and Benet drove home immediately following the Patry, for some crazy reason). Ron had a work commitment last year and couldn't make the trip, so we recruited a fill-in percussionist. But after ten months of hearing how much fun we had, wild horses couldn't keep him away this year.
