Dear New Orleans - I am coming down to the second weekend of this year's Jazz Fest. I would very much like to rent a parking space near the Fair Grounds for all four days. If you have a space you would like to rent, please e-mail me at gsutnick@gmail.com Thanks. - Gary

My parents friend was just telling me in the 80's he would park his car in the Quarter and he knew it would get towed. He said it was only $25 and he knew his car would be safe. He would pick it up after fest.

I thought that was pretty funny.

I've found that a single parking ticket in the CBD, say, for an unpaid meter or freight zone violation, costs less than a night of parking at most of the hotels there.

But towing is expensive these days.

years ago, a NOLA metermaid told us they would not tow from a meter.
this may or may Not still be true. of course if you have unpaid tickets you may be towed or booted.

I've ignored the conventional wisdom and driven to the fest from places in Metairie. I park anywhere from 5 to 10 blocks away and haven't had to pay to park. That's if you don't count the one time the car was towed for parking too close to a pump. It was a pain to get there but there was a very fun crowd at the impound lot.

If you are going to leave your car for several days. Find an off-street parking spot somewhere in front of a random house in a Neighborhood near the Street Car Line (Canal, St. Charles or South/ North Carrolton Streets).

The Street Car will take you within walking distance of a lot of places in New Orleans.
