When you're in front of one stage, can you hear music from other stages?

When you buy food, can you pay with money, or do you have to first buy food tickets?

Is walking from the FQ to the Jazzfest a viable option?

Now if your near the middle of the track you might hear Zydeco, Jazz, Blues all at the same time coming from different directions.

Hi, Blue. My friend, bethesdaboy, used to "zuluwalk" as he called it from the LaSalle on Rampart and Canal to the fairgrounds but there are city buses to the fest if you prefer. I think the cost is $1.25, exact change required.

No, Pay with money, take the Canal street car, some blocks may not be safe to walk. Some advice , if you need to cool off in a clean area with clean rest rooms check out the Grand stands , it is inside and there are some seats. have fun!

My friends who used to live in the Marigny always walked to and from the fest. It's not a bad walk if you are a walker. That said, they were people who camped at a big stage and stayed there all day. I can't imagine walking to the fest and doing as much moving from stage to stage as I do. I'd be dead before I ate my first po-boy.

If you are going to walk, the safest route is thru the Quarter to Esplanade, then up Esplanade to Fest.

I walked from the Fest to the Fabourg//FQ last year. Bus service was pretty spotty and the wait for cabs was long. It was a pleasant, non-threatening walk down Esplanade. Then again, I might have been oblivious. I know one thing: my legs were dead after bouncing from stage to stage all day.

i'm a city bus kinda girl, it's easy and fun...you get the hear all sorts of chatter on the way home....and yes...when you smell that smell....it's probably you! also, when you use a restroom that has attendants...please tip...when those gals work (i don't know if the guys bathrooms have attendands) they really make it a nice experiece..they have lotion and mouthwash...all fluffy things you might need during your fest days...and they do a great job of keeping the bathrooms clearn.

We ride bikes from where we stay in the Bywater to the fairgrounds up Esplanade - which is long enough, it'd be a rather long walk - but up Esplanade is definitely the way to do it! :)

and they have trailer potties on the track near Fais Do Do and near the Sauvage entry/exit. not fancy put there is water for hand washing.

the trailer potties are generally airconditioned too. another reason to always wear skirts and dresses to JF....easier pulling clothes back up after....well...you know!

Thanks again for all your replies.

I was just wondering about the walking because, looking at a map, it appears to be a straight shot up Esplanade. And 3 miles really isn't that far. I walk my dog at least 3 miles every day. (If you own a Lab, you'll understand.)

But I imagine that after the first day of festing, with all the walking from stage to stage, and the late nights of partying, more walking would probably be the last thing you'd want to do.

I just double-checked. It's 2 miles from Esplanade & Rampart, 3 miles from Canal & Decatur.

So... 3 miles to Fest. 8 hours of standing and dancing, with 5 more miles of wandering mixed in. And then 3 miles home.

Repeated for 3 days in a row. Is there a smiley for exhausted?

My posse and I have been walking from the Marigny or Quarter to the Fest for years now -- it's a great way to walk off some of the food & booze. :) Pick up a bottle of Gatorade or H2O for the walk.

Yahoo maps has it as less than 2 miles. Agreed that the best route is up Esplanade: From Esplanade, one can veer right onto Bayou Road and enter thru the Gentilly St. entrance, or continue on Esplanade to N White/Dupre/N Lopez St and enter thru the Sauvage St entrance.

(In all the years we've been doing this, we've never felt unsafe -- not even the time when we went up Elysian Fields instead of Esplanade by mistake!)

Most days, yes, we did walk back as well. (The walk back always seems faster than the walk there for some reason!)

By the time we got back to the Marigny/Quarter it had started getting dark. In terms of safety, there are enough folks walking and vehicle traffic on Esplanade, that one should feel safe.

I have done the walk up Esplanade the last 4 years. Always people walking so always felt safe. Sometimes if it was raining I would take a cab or bus. Also in the morning if you feel yourself getting tired, you can always hail a cab. Walk on the side where cabs are returning from the Fairgrounds and it has always been easy to get one. However if you try to hail one headed to the Fest, they are usually full. Just a little trick I learned over the years. Walking also seems to get the body going in the morning!! :)

Been to the fest many times and always shared a friends totem spot(It was/is the Pink Pig with all the state flags) This year, we are getting married on May 7th and feel it is time for our own flag. Over all the years, never paid attention to the flag pole...Any recomendations, tips or suggestions are appreciated...We are flying in from Philly so that is a consideration. Thanks and can't wait. Our new flag will fly the semaphore "W" a top a beer mug and martini glass...Find us second weekend. Is there a totem list any where on this board.

There have been some other threads where this has been discussed. However, the best thing I've seen (and one that I have used) is a collapsable fishing rod. Get something that goes over 8 ft. -mine goes to 16 ft. The problem is finding a way to keep it upright. The Fest does not allow anything to be hammered into the ground (too many things buried underground- water and electrical systems). So, unless you're going to hold it all day, which is a pain, you'll need to find a way to fasten it to something. Good luck and happy Festin'.

I know the "pig lady". But her flag has no state flags. Maybe someone different. Is she local who brings her kids with her most days?

The flying pink pig and state flags are from MD. Everyone who attends and joins the group is encouraged to bring the state flag from where they reside. Generally there is MD, CO, NJ, DE, LA, MS and probably the addition of NY and NH this year. You never know who will show up.

Like swag said, if you're coming from the FQ, walk through the FQ to Esplanade, and walk Esplanade all the way up. It's a BEAUTIFUL walk, and really helped get us pumped up for what we'd be experiencing. That said, we are both 23 and like to walk a lot.
Last year, my boy and I walked all the way from St. Charles in the Garden District, through the quarter, and up Esplanade. That took us about an hour and a half each way. You won't be alone walking to the fest, and if you leave right after the fest, you won't be alone walking back to the FQ, but it's a bit quieter on the walk back. Just try to do it before the sun goes down to be safest. We ended up walking from the Fest straight to Frenchman Street, and then walked back to the Garden District, via Bourbon, at about 3 a.m.
But, we're a little nuts.

But, we're a little nuts. And somewhat heedless of your safety at that hour. Please don't take a chance and do something like that again -- contrary to popular belief, youth does not equal invicibility. Okay, okay, that's the mother in me talking, can't help myself. Please be safe.

Fred,

The only place I used to get dry ice was a place called French Market Ice Service - it's on decatur (in the french quarter) and you need to pre-order it....they require a minimum of 50 lbs. Their phone number is 504-945-2137.

Not sure how many folks were actually at Acura that day (I'm pretty sure the name had changed by 2001). The total for the day was given as 160,000, which is about 60,000 too many. I think the record up until that day was 99,000.
And that photo was not taken on DMB day. Believe it was taken in 2000 because of the way some stages were configured. I've altered the photo more accurately show what the Fairgrounds look like today.

Okay, this has probably been beaten to death, but...Last year was the first for my Dad and I (we did 1st weekend). We walked to and from the 1/4 every day and had no problem. It is worth a call to the NOLA PD to see what's up as far as crime activity. Swag is dead on, I clocked it in at 3.2 miles from Baronne Plaza Hotel, and Esplanade is definitely the way to go. It's an easy hour walk for most adults who like walking to begin with. I coming this year with the wife and kids, and we plan to walk. So if you see a couple with two kids all wearing hats, say hi and enjoy the scenery on the way to Fest.

With all the walking, dancing, strolling, raoming, wandering, I lost weight despite the massive amounts of Beer, fried chicken, Beer, jambalaya, Beer, meat pies, Beer, Huey's meatloaf, Beer, cocktails, Beer, shrimp remoulade, Beer...you probably get the point. No, we didn't drink any water on the entire trip. No, we were never hung over...not even for a second. That's what JazzFest does for you. Did I mention the beer? It was mostly Fosters 'cause the beer tent guys wouldn't part with their High Life. Yes, I did try to bribe them. But there's a reason why they call it the champagne of beers.
