A friend of mine told me she is great in concert. She actually co-wrote a lot of the songs, sings the lead (what a voice) and plays lead guitar on a lot of the songs. She took off a lot of time after 1999 to graduate from high school. She had been signed with Arista and Sony but they both wanted to turn her into the next Brittany Spears. She refused to become a pop star and rode out her contracts with those companies. She is starting to tour again in the upcoming months and will have a new album out this year.

This is her when she was just a kid...

And this is one of my all-time favorite songs of hers, and the title sums up just about everyone in New Orleans these days: "Everyone's got a story that would break your heart"...

Here's another video shot when she was just a kid...it's a pretty decent version of "Angel From Montgomery". (This gal needs to move to New Orleans I think...)

These two are the type of people we should be listening to hit it big instead of the spew that AI and such churn out. Don't get me wrong, every once in a while there is a "pop" sensation that is good but for the most part (ashley simpson) it is (brittany spears) all (justin timberlake) worth (carrie underwood) laughing (ace whatever his name was) at to (all the ones already off the scene) see how (sanjay) bad it is.

Hey Pal, I like Carrie Underwood. Especially her new hit song, Before He Cheats. That song is fun as hell to sing to! :p

And I think I remember a certain SOMEONE who used to listen to that AI filth with us EVERY WEEK but I'm not naming any names (mightyradgumbo).

So what is your educated guess on how old Shannon is? ;)

What, they don't have Google down there in Alabama??? :>)

OK, maybe I will give you Carrie Underwood...and yes I did watch AI (and still would if it wasn't for the work suckage) but it was more for the people I was watching it with than the people I was watching ;)

Maybe she dropped out and was just "finished with high school", if you get my drift...either that or she's 26!

Aha! That's good; you're paying attention. Here's the skinny:

She was 13 when she recorded her album back in 1999. This video is taken from when she was 14.

She was born in Fargo, ND and convinced her mom and dad to move to Minneapolis to help her music career. She lived in LA for awhile when she was with Sony but has moved back to Minneapolis. Her material for her upcoming album is a little racy and is more Classic Rock than Blues. She had a great song on the soundtrack for the movie "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants". That song is named "Sun's Gonna Rise" and is a rocker.

Ahhh, here we go:

"After miraculously recovering from a near-terminal case of "Bruce", blues artist turned rock and roller, Shannon Curfman has finally released the follow-uprecord to her critically acclaimed debut album, "Loud Guitars, Big Suspicions". Originally signed to Arista Records at the age of 14, "Loud Guitars" rose to the number 3 spot on the Billboard Blues Chart. She has shared the stage with legends B.B. King, Buddy Guy John Mellencamp and Santana and has recorded with John Mayall, Billy Preston, Meshell N'degeocello and Keb' Mo. Her songs have appeared on the soundtracks of "Where the Heart Is" and "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants", as well as HBO's "The Sopranos", "G String Divas" and the WB's "Gilmore Girls". At 14, Shannon was praised for her blues-driven songwriting, gritty, soulful voice and her scorching guitar. Now 20, Shannon 's back on the road honing a new set of songs featured on her new release, "Take It Like A Man". With age and experience, the music has evolved and the genre has moved slightly away from funky-blues towards rock & roll."

She's at least 22. I saw her at a Blues & Jazz Festival here in KC and they were saying she was 15 then. Seems like it was more than 7 years ago.

According to AMG she was born on July 31, 1985 in Fargo, ND, which makes her 21 years old.

Of course, she wouldn't be the first woman to lie about her age. ;)

Seems a few others dig her, too:

Quotes

“I was blown away…I know when I hear star quality and you radiate with that. …I would love the opportunity to work with you and your very impressive personal and professional family”. ~Clive Davis, President - Arista Records

“…the most impressive debut by a blues artist since Stevie Ray Vaughan's Texas Flood. Shannon sings with the brassiness of Bonnie Raitt, writes liked a funked-up Sheryl Crow and plays guitar as if she's channeling both SRV and Jimi Hendrix…(Shannon is) the best argument for reincarnation aside from the Dalai Lama himself” ~ Vic Garbarini, Playboy Magazine

“I heard Hard To Make A Stand on the radio and loved it”. ~ Sheryl Crow - Read Sheryl Crow's Letter to Shannon!

“The biggest buzz belonged to blues rocker Shannon Curfman, who drew an ecstatic response from a packed house at the Fox Theatre. She will be this year's breakout, without a doubt. It was the biggest opening act since Counting Crows [in 1993]”. ~ Kent Zimmerman, Gavin (speaking at Triple A radio station summit in Boulder , CO , 1999)

“Scorching blues guitar and gritty female vocals from a wunderkind who sounds like the younger sister of Jonny Lang. But Lang would probably feel a little heat from the competition -- Curfman was only thirteen when she recorded her debut, yet her singing and playing have the soul of someone many years her senior…. Curfman speaks eloquently through her guitar. She's got a crazy skill for melody and an ability to extract real meaning …and with the help of a top-shelf band, she turns in an introductory statement that makes you want to hear more. Her instrumental mastery is undeniable”. ~ Rolling Stone

“As far as young guitarists go, there's this girl in Minneapolis named Shannon Curfman . She does the old Chaka Khan funky blues kind of stuff. She's only fourteen or fifteen, and she scares me”. ~Jonny Lang

“OK, Britney Spears - take your tarty makeup and schoolgirl vixen outfits and go home. A real woman-child has arrived, and she can mop the floor with you”. ~ Gemma Tarlach , Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 10/02/99

“Curfman is miles ahead of her colleagues in vocal prowess... By the end of the night, it didn't matter how old she was. She was just brilliant, period." -- Times Union , Albany , NY July 19, 2000 .

“Perhaps the most extreme entry in the ranks of white, teen blues players hailing from the culturally barren Midwest , Curfman represents true girl power”. ~Yahoo! / Launch

“How does someone so young write songs with so much life packed in them”? ~CNN, Worldbeat

“Loud Guitars, Big Suspicions makes it clear that Curfman has her own voice, one that's a little bolder and gutsier than Lang's. Throughout the record, her singing is impassioned and playing is fiery”. ~Billboard

“Loud Guitars, Big Suspicions may well be the debut of the next queen of blues guitar." - Genevieve Williams, Amazon.com."

Pretty impressive.

After reading this thread last night, I was intrigued, so I went and gave Shannon a listen. I liked her. Listened again this morning just to make sure and I still like her. Would love to see her live to see if she's the real deal and not just produced....but everything I listened to I was digging. There's something about listening to a 22 year old singing about life's struggles that doesn't "fit".....but give her a few years and about a hundred cartons of ciggies and she'll have the sound down pat!!! Very reminiscent of Bonnie Raitt.

I know, Csoul! I get the same vibe from her. Every time I listen to her, I like her more. There was another song that I listened to that I really liked, too. And if you're referring to the video, the video was done when she was 14, not 22. She is almost 22 now.

Anyway, here it is:
