i smoke when i drink adult beverages - and we mention how much i drink - but i go thru a lot of cig's in NOLA.
the clubs are usually so crowded at JF, i tend to step outside to smoke anyway. i'm one of those anit-smoke smokers.
what exactly does the new law state? is there an out for bars? other states have outlawed it concerning places that serve food. ??
i would thing dos jefes cigar bar would give up its limited menu before it would give up the smoking.

from an article i found online:
On Jan. 1, the Louisiana Smoke-Free Air Act went into effect prohibiting smoking in virtually all public places except casinos and bars. Smoking is not allowed at bars inside restaurants even if the bar is completely walled off from the dining section. Smoking is permitted in bars serving food as long as liquor sales constitute more than 50 percent of total sales.
i don't think too many music clubs changed their smoking policy due to this law. if they do serve food, i would bet it does not make up 50% of their sales.

I doubt it will change anything, anywhere in New Orleans. I might be wrong, but nothing much has changed here. The office building I work in got an exempition because of the segregated air system for the smoke lounge. Same for most all the bars and food places. The public part is weird, and I don't understand that part.
My understanding is that the Fairgrounds is not "public", so I guess we can still fire up.?.?

Can't smoke in restaurants. Can smoke in bars. The definition of a bar is: a business that holds a Class A-General retail permit and the primary purpose of such business is to serve alcoholic beverages for consumption by guests on the premises and in which the serving of food is only incidental to the consumption of those beverages, including but not limited to, taverns, nightclubs, cocktail lounges, and cabarets.

Bless you :D . . . as a non-smoker - there is nothing grosser than smoking folks who insist on ruining others' meals with smoking . . . I have to say I was really hoping that the new laws would clear out some of the smoke in places down there - but it sounds like it isn't so . . . I almost left Howlin' Wolf one time because the smoke was SO thick and bad (and I'm not a wimpy, lightweight non-smoker - I've spent a large part of my adult life in smoky bars, and can deal with some - but too much is too much).
It's just healthier for everyone to not be in so much smoke indoors all of the time - so it's too bad to hear that the new laws don't help with that.

I've been in the old Howlin Wolf watching the cloud of smoke slowly descend until everyone is in a fog. If the club owners would get some decent smoke eaters, it wouldn't be such a problem. I'm a smoker, but even I couldn't stand it at the Wolf that night.

So, everybody , do your part and drink up! Make sure your bar tab is 2X more than the food! :)

dos Jefes has a few of those, you can watch the smoke drift to and in them - kind of cool to watch. but they really work.

No, all they had were a couple of crappy fans that just moved the fogbank of smoke around the club - other people I knew who were smokers were having a hard time that night too, like you - then there was how I and my clothes smelt afterwards . . .

Yup, I take more showers when in NOLA than anywhere else - it's one of the tradeoffs of having long hair.
