View Full Version : More beer choices?

In case you didn't see this posted by festydave in another thread;

The Pilsner Urquell was a surprise for me last year but a nice addition. There will be some other additions that we will announce next week.

Hhhhmmmm.......:D

I think this will be year 4 w/Pilsner Urquell. I posted somewhere earlier that we bring in empty sports bottles. It's easier to carry tap beer around the fest.

I can't imagine better than Urquell. I know SAB/Miller has a big Peroni push right now. But it just doesn't compare to PU.

Yeah, Peroni's just not as good and tasty as Urquell. What about a hefewiesen?? That would be refreshing at Jazzfest . . .

Bill/KC
03-22-2007, 12:07 AM
Anything from the regular beer vendors would have to be packaged in cans or plastic bottles. But I guess they could have a few more beer wagons with tap beer. It'll be interesting to see next week.

Well, yeah :) - but I figure it's been suggested and shot down for whatever crazy reason (that would be a good question for Chrisjoseph and/or FestyDave - what's up with that??!!) . . . so I was trying to think of another good alternative . . .

festivalgirl
03-22-2007, 12:38 AM
Well, if SAB/Miller has an exclusive then there aren't too many good alternatives.

Olde English 800 anyone...:p

as much as i don't care for Miller products, you can't blame them for insisting on exclusive rights for a festival they have $ponsored for many years.

As I read Dave's post in context on the originalthread, it wasn't clear to me that the upcoming changes were necessarily beer related.

Of course, trying to decipher statements from Festydave can be harder than Alan Greenspan.

Last I checked, SAB Miller did not have a single ale or dark beer in their whole portfolio.

Can't believe Chris Joseph hasn't said anything yet. I wonder if he knows what the additions are? I just heard a week or two about what they are, not sure if I should say anything. Let's just say the Godfather is my favorite movie.

How about some Cider this year i.e. Woodchuck or Strongbow.
There is nothing quite like it for quenching your thirst on a hot summers day. Carries a punch too;)

I need to pay attention to this thread. Cider is deadly, B-Dicky. So easy to drink - a great thirst quencher then bang!! Good suggestion tho'...the missus loves strongbow.

We load up at Ms. Lena's numerous times a day. If I end up near that beer truck, I always get one just to give my taste buds a change.
I am getting really thirsty from this thread....

Fosters/Miller/Miller Lite/Peroni... come on... they're all the same at the end of the day. There all basic lagers. They all match the same with food, they all taste terrible if they get warm. And 1/2 of them are skunked by the time you drink them anyways at the festival.

It would be nice to have something different. A dark lager, an ale, anything with some flavor. All the food there has so much character, why can't the beers.

I just looked at the SAB/Miller website, for some of their brands. Not sure which are available in LA, but how about:
Henry Weinhard's
or
Leinenkugel's

I don't think Foster's is their brand, so the distributor could have some other options too.

Abita would be great, but as somone said earlier, I"m pretty sure they'll be excluded.

Couldn't agree with you more. Y'all ought to come out to Oregon and taste some real beers with flavor and aftertaste. Try any of the fine Rogue Ales (I like Dead Guy the best); Deschutes Brewery, Full Sail, Sierra Nevada and Bridgeport should be available nationwide as well. Since each brewery makes a very wide assortment of beers, you need to sample a few to find your niche I guarantee you that you would never go back to drinking the mass-produced garbage that constitutes 90% of the sales at JazzFest. The hardest part is spending upwards of $8-$9 for a sixer, BUT most of the ales pack twice the punch as a Bud or Miller, so you'll get to the same place twice as fast. As far as Abita goes, well, it IS the best beer produced in the region, but it pales (pun intended) in comparison to some of the better West Coast micros (and we'll throw in Vermont, too, as they make some great beers over there). Anyways, get in touch with those West Coast micros and be one of the first on your block. The coffee craze that started in the Pacific Northwest was only the beginning........

OK, so I am a bit regionally biased .....:)

Leinie's would be great! Their Creamy Dark is finished with my favorite flowery hops- Cascade. Weinhard's wheat is good too. Both would be draught, no cans...

Along with the regular Miller and Sam Adams stuff, they did have the Leinenkugel wheat beer (yum!) at Langerado. It and the Sam Adam's white sold out before the end of the fest. Selfishly, while I do enjoy good beer, I have to hope that they don't add a good beer to the JF roster. It's very easy to not drink at the Fest b/c the choices are what they are. =)

Yum...Leinenkugel! Second thing I buy when I arrive home (Chicago) after consuming a hot dog or italian beef samwich.

Great red lager and honey weiss beers. I just checked their website and they don't distribute their beers in Louisiana.

Well, I totally agree with you, Bruce - coming from NorCal . . . so many excellent microbrews here that could be offered at Jazzfest (e.g., Sierra Nevada is now sold and distributed nationwide) . . .

However, I don't know that the local consumer base is there yet for West Coast microbrews - I think it would just be mostly visiting festers buying it. And with the proceeds of the beverage tents going to local non-profit groups (like the ZDC, Kiwanis, etc.) - my guess is that they would prefer to go with what they know will sell - the usual beer suspects.

I wouldn't disagree with you there, Zydekitten. A few years ago I was staying in Slidell and went to this huge liquor store....at least 10,000 square feet of retail space, and couldn't find even ONE micro six pack. I felt grateful that they at least had Michelob Black and Tan. What I would like to see is just one tent serving up some good draft Micros and let them build (or not) from there. I'm sure whatever contractual deals they have with Miller would probably preclude having that happen.

No chance of this, but Creemore from Canada would be awesome. I hate to say it, and I certainly have not tasted all the brews some of you have mentioned, but I have not had a 'big-name' American beer that I liked. Maybe some of the micro brews would change my mind. At fest, I drink Fosters & P/U , which are not too bad. As for Miller and Miller Lite, sorry, I'd rather drink water. When in California, we consume either Mexican or European beers. Especially German (St.Pauli Girl), when 'dinking' from the boot. (Yummy!)

I agree with you on that one. After our trip to Belgium last year, my husband and I will not drink the "big name" american beers anymore. They are nasty. We buy a lot of European beers. We do like Abita, though, (not big name). We are going to Germany this summer and will stop in on the Okterberfest celebration to check it out. I in particular like the Belgium lambics.

There are no big name American beers that I like, unless you count Sam Adams (a former micro thats gotten pretty huge). And some of the other former micros have definitely gone big time (Anchor Steam and RedHook readily come to mind). Kind of like good music stations; once people start paying attention, they get big and the quality starts to degrade.

AB is now experimenting with microbeers in select markets.
back when we were in college, the produced a michelob dark that was pretty yummy for an american beer. not sure if its still around.
i cannot swallow Miller Lite - its just awful to me. GDM's aint bad if they're cold enough.

i like stouts, porters and ales best (a little heavy for drinking in the hot sun). but i enjoy lagers & pilsners too. toquote the Asylum Street Spankers:

If the fest will have more keg setups like the PU trailer, there are greater odds of having some of the brews being mentioned. Otherwise it would be cans. I believe that Lowenbrau and Olympia are distributed by Miller in the northeast, along with some others I can't recall. Those beers have been unavailable in N.O. for a decade or so. Abita would be the no-brainer here, but the fest has been very loyal to Miller since the beginning. I know of a certain threadhead that would really like to see Corona, which does come in cans. This thread is kind of like the Maltese Falcon, the "stuff that dreams are made of". But it's fun to dream:)

just saw Carrie at the St. Pat's parade - she had a great spot reserved for us.
and lots of good Guiness, Harp, Smithwicks, etc. (back on thread subject)

we were up for a series last year and sat in the left field bleachers (thatnks to Carrie)- it was hotter than hades - they were coming around with the super-super soakers. the beer choices at Wrigley aren't that great either (more on thread subject). and your bleachers are pricey. i pay $12 per seat per game, the non season tix price for cubs games is only $20. we paid $40 face value for those bleacher seats on the north side.

Yep, Ron, Karen, Nebraska Keith and the gang. Great folks. I sit in a sane area, right center, last aisle, in front of the concession stand with old Marv (who has attended two Jazz Fests well into his 70's god bless him),
Judy and Colleen.

I think I talked to Carrie at the tap after one of those games.

Back to the subject beer in hand...Yeah, unless you walk down to the ground level to the beers of world cart, its warm stale Bud, Bud Lite or my choice, Old (Doggie) Style. Not sure if you ventured south on Clark Street during your visit but they opened a Uberstein in the old Heaven on Seven location. Fab german beer. Just bring plenty of money. Guthries on Addison is a good stop. They have Sierra Nevada and I believe I enjoyed several Abita Restoration Ales during a visit. Also highly recommend the Ten Cat on Ashland Avenue for brews in that area.

Off subject...Bleacher tickets are insane and if my disease was curable, I'd spend my money on better things than lining the deep pockets of the Tribune corporation. $2780 this season. It's sad to think this once was the place my parents used as day care in the mid/late 1970's. I lived well on $3.00 a day ($.80 bus; $1.00 tix and $1.20 for food). Bleachers at Yankee are still in the affordable $10 (stopped going when they started reserved seating)

Any Threadheads ever needing a single or possibly two bleacher for Wrigley should feel free to contact me @ ivyelysian@comcast.net. Face price and all that I ask is you don't scalp it (brings bad karma and the Cubs have enough problems)

Maybe we should move to the baseball thread?

Question from a Festal Virgin: how much do they charge for beers at JF? I am making my budget now and need to know what my cash outflow will be per beer if I don't happen to run into friendly TH's in a buying mood. Do they charge by the brand or by the quantity? Is it sold by can/bottle/draught? Any info is soitenly appreciated!

I love the idea of bringing empty sport bottles into the fest. :D

Oh, Festal Virgin Ted (better than Farmer Ted) . . . here you go:

Fosters (in the can) = $4.00
Miller Genuine Draft, Miller Lite, Sharp's = $3.00
Pilsner Urquell = $3.00 (if I remember correctly, the others I'm sure of having been a cashier at Ms. Lena's beer tent)

:D

Cans are all 12 oz, drafts are 16 oz cups, by the way.

These were 2006 prices, hopefully they will stay the same, but no definite word yet.

the zephyrs game is dead - well it got moved to 7pm - so dead for all of us.

That's too bad Barb. It really sounded like everyone was looking forward to a field trip. I was thinking of going myself but didn't want to commit because I'm attempting to pace myself.

How about a Threadhead wiffle ball game before Marcia?

Gemini Ted, your talking about keeping it going at the hotle, and the fact that i got my tshirt in the mail today, reminded me of one of my fave Threadhead quotes: Jazzfest is a marathon, not a sprint.

Great call Zydekitten!
I would love to go Monday afternoon. Iowa Cubs! Noon start and it should be a fast game because it's the last game of the home stand.

Thursday night I'm on the fence about because I'm not much for night games and the fan fest and Chaz fest might take up the greater part of the day. My Chicago friends Connie, Norb and Quiet John may be interested in coming along on Monday also.

As much as our pitchers get hurt, we'll probably get to see Kerry Wood or Mark Prior in a rehab assignment.

Coolio!!! Sounds like a plan, man - I'd love to see the Iowa Cubs, that's a team that I don't think makes it out here to play the Sacramento RiverCats (our local minor league team) very often. It'd be great to see Wood and/or Prior on the mound!

Yeah, I haven't totally decided about Thursday night yet either - except for IAC, the Patry and Roux Ga Roux - I haven't commited to any nighttime events . . . keep low and stay moving, that's my motto ;)

'Specially if it's not a quality champagne or sparkling wine (as bubbly from anywhere other than Champagne in France may not be legally called champagne) - the one piece of advice my Mama gave to me when I turned 21 was don't drink cheap champagne/sparklng wine out in the sun!!! I would run a line to my kitchen sink- that soap dispenser thingee would be history!

The problem is the hose for the beer would be next to your hot water pipe. Unless you had room under the sink for a refridgerator, your beer would get too warm on it's way to the sink.

As as single guy living alone, I am up to 3 fridges. 1) A kegerator for my homebrew. 2) A wine fridge for the wine and beer I'm aging. 3) A regular fridge for the white wine and beer I'm currently planning on drinkind (and some mustard and other condiments)

And you are right, kegging is much much much easier than bottling, but much harder to give out as gifts when you have too much.

The wine selection scares me without even knowing what is there.

Touche, Ohio. I keep saying the same thing. I keep looking at my equipment stacked neatly in the closet and say "some day, my friends, we'll brew again...". I have 2 cases of bottles in the garage that are the last thing I see when I leave in the morning and the first thing I see when I get home. I also think about kegging as well, and have even considered building space in the fridge for it, but the Mrs. would get ticked off if I acted upon it!

What style was your best batch? Mine was a Pumpkin Ale I made one year and it was a big hit.

Well, based on one of the other threads we could accomplish that at the fairgrounds. You'd have to 1) move to LA (the other one), since that's where the fridges are, and 2) Root root root for the home team (go Dodgers! - still bitter about Jack Clark).

Well, we know it's a Coppola wine, so it may be this:

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p136/ibjamn50/a_wine_for_sofia_Par_0003_Image.jpg

The description disturbs me a little, especially the last sentence:

No, this didn't get lost in translation, but is really the latest product from the Niebaum Coppola Wine Estate in California. And yes, it's the the Coppola that you and I think it is.
Francis Ford Coppola, best known as the director of blockbusters like "The Godfather" and "Apocalypse Now" has grand plans to make a name for himself in the wine world.

And the latest from the estate is a irresistably sleek product, Sofia, named after Coppola's daughter and, herself, a director of the academy award winning movie, "Lost In Translation".
The Sofia Mini Blanc de Blancs is a sparkling wine with a distinctive blend as unconventional as the woman who inspired it and admittedly, it appears to be a wine more to be seen drinking with.
Comes in a beautiful six-sided box containing 4 mini cans, the packaging can pass off as a designer perfume box and the glittery rose red colour almost makes you think of Christmas.
The grapes for the Sofia, mainly Pinot Blanc, are grown in northern Montery County. Containing 11% alcohol content, the Sofia Blanc de Blancs bursts with rich pear, honeysuckle and exotic passion fruit aromas. Crisp apple, melon and juicy tangerine flavours fill the palate, with notes of bright lemon and honey evident on the refreshing, mouth-tingling finish.
It is best served ice-cold, out of the freezer, if possible. But seriously, drinking out of the can may be a little too gassy and dry for some.

I can tell them apart, and I still like Merlot --- although a nice Cab-Merlot blend is nice.
Jack (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002006/): If they want to drink Merlot, we're drinking Merlot.
Miles Raymond (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0316079/): No, if anyone orders Merlot, I'm leaving. I am NOT drinking any f**king Merlot!

Too bad that movie couldn't have picked on Chardonnay instead. :p

True - I really don't like Chard anymore, used to dink it years ago, but I prefer drier whites nowadays.

Although, I'm not a huge fan of Merlot either - so I cracked up at that line myself :D

Whats the new beer then? Those were all there before.

This thread was all speculation. Festydave said in another thread that they would announce some "new additions". Guess that's wine and champagne.

oh god, there goes my dinner lol! Wine and the sun are a baaaad mix!!!

I was thinking that, too. It's gonna be hot enough out there already. I'm thinking beer might be it for me. And maybe a little something to supplement that. ;)

Well, the line in the movie actually came from the book. The movie doesn't explain that he hated Merlot, not because it was a bad wine, but it was his ex-wife's favorite wine and he hated everything about her.

Of course I find Merlot's too tanin forward most of the time. Give me my big California Cab (and some Crawfish Monica while we're at it).

Miller has a new beer out in the Texas market. "Miller Chill" Chelada-Style light beer brewed with a hint of lime & salt. The lime green bottles feature green and silver modular designs reminiscent of Aztec art, with the word “Chill” in bold black letters across the front and “Chelada style” below.

I don't know, canned wine at Jazz Fest just doesn't feel right to me. I'm sure some people will try it the first weekend, but if it ain't good, I can see sales plumetting the second weekend.

I'll stick with beer thank you. I love Fosters, but they always seem to run out around mid-afternoon. Still don't understand why we have local bands, local crafts and local food, but can't have the local beer (Abita!).

Maybe -- maybe not. People keep drinking the Miller beer the second weekend. ;)
