View Full Version : New and Improved Rules for Jazz Fest.

Well know I am worried! Just went a bought a very small camera for the fest and it does have video ability but not why we bought it. Shoots about 1 minute and the disc is full. Please tell me it ain't so. I could have saved some money, we have a video and really nice camera we are leaving at home. It sounds like the gate folks really check every little thing?
Our camera takes video and we've never had a problem. I've never seen anyone being hassled for a camera (this will be year 10 for me). I really wouldn't worry about it . . .

Both my digital cameras have video capability and I have never had any trouble getting in with them. The gate folks really don't check all that closely most of the time - incidents of hassle are fairly rare.
Hell, I can barely remember how to do the little video thingy on my Sony pocket digital, much less gate rent-a-security with precious little time to spend on it . . . ;)

Just turn the dial to the little video-camera icon and press the shutter button. And don't turn the camera sideways, unless you like watching your videos with your head on your shoulder (Lesson learned the hard way. ;))
Back on the subject of cameras and video...
Fest policy says still cameras are ok. It makes no distinction between film and digital. It does prohibit video cameras and sound recording.
In general, the folks working security at the gate are not technology experts. The rule of thumb has always been, if it looks like a still camera, it will get in; if it looks like a movie camera, you may have problems. PGK's post is the first time I've ever heard of gate folks trying to block still cameras from coming in. And I'd wager about a million cameras have been brought into Fest over the last 5 years, so the odds seem pretty good.
But technology is converging. I'd wager that 90% of digital cameras made in the last 5 years have some sort of limited video or sound capability. Those features are getting better, allowing longer and higher quality clips. Even some newer cell phones can shoot video. And the ease of distributing them is also increasing. Given the long sad history of musicians getting ripped off on royalties, R&B and Blues artists in particular, Fest has good reason to prohibit video recording. So Fest may need to change rules sometime soon.
But they haven't yet.
Festydave, can you do what you can to ensure that gate security is properly trained to allow digital cameras in?
And everyone else, if you do shoot video with your digicam, please keep them for your personal enjoyment, and don't distribute. The more widespread Fest bootleg videos become, the more likely Fest is to need to tighten the rules.

The Festival rules state that there is no audio or video recording allowed. That said we are a photo friendly festival and have been letting digital cameras into the Festival since they were invented. We let in 35 mm cameras. We don't allow in cam-corders. If you have a digital camera and you are using the video recording feature to film, you are subject to punishment. Same goes for audio taping. These aren't new rules.

Probably most of those digital cameras have poor video capabilties. The Fest doesn't want videos of their performers to show up on a nice DVD somewhere. And they want to control (and sell) the audio portion of the performances too. Though, I have seen some clandestine mics in the crowd before.

Well, I'll reserve my little vid capability for late in the day. After I've taken my pics. I will, of course, try to capture some slurgid b00b activity by you threadheads. Be forewarned...
PGKPS, I used to do that thang, but I kinda gave it up at JF a few years ago.
Best pics (1000s) I ever took were with a FM2 and a 70-110mm f4, but that was back when you could get close.
LOL at the monopod, I got shut down at the gate because they thought it was metal (NO, it's carbon fiber, you dumbass).
If you gotta a FM2 body you want to get rid of we need to talk...

I agree. The videos are just not that good quality. The only video I have ever done was a 30 sec clip of zydeco dancing to show my kids what it was like.

I think I will bring my 300 2.8 and a 2x along with a few other lenses into the grounds along with the monopod-maybe collapse it down and slip it down my pants leg? (it's aluminum) Or in my photovest some way.
Sorry don't have any extra bodies to sell right now.

I bought a few shirts over the years from Engine 29 on Decatur as well. Good guys on the job in the NOFD. I see where they are recruiting for firefighters... $6.52 an hour to start. New Orleans Firefighters deserve a raise
maybe we should start a new thread? and write that there is concern to the invisible man in charge...if Firefighters who really risk thier lives get $six and change less than a $1.00 over minimum what do other civil servants with less risk get? like teachers?... I heard McD's was starting at $8.00 an hour? with signing bonuses

Dave, is it possible for the JF staff to enforce the "no beach balls" violation? I have noticed that quite often people in front of the Acura stage, in particular, bring beach balls and it is extremely distracting to see them flying back and forth when you're trying to get into the groove laid down by the band onstage.
Im just getting caught up, and this is just a gem!

I think the only issue is with people abusing their chairs. Its when whole groups leave chairs in prime locations and think they "own" the space. We like to move around a lot, but we don't set up camp and then wander.
I'll happily be a seat filler though!
We do set up camp and then wander---but we set up at least half way back or at the Shady Camp and then go from there. We wouldn't begin to think that it would be cool to set up in front and then walk away... I think the SRO is an awesome idea and my guess is the artists' will appreciate it more too...

More From The Times-Picayune
Jazzfest refined
You can buy wine and bubbly, but move those chairs to the rear
Sunday, April 01, 2007
Keith Spera
At a Tuesday morning event kicking off the one-month countdown to Jazzfest, Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu cracked jokes and talked up economic development.
City Council President Oliver Thomas second-lined.
Jazzfest producer Quint Davis predicted the best fest ever.
And Mayor Ray Nagin was nowhere to be found.
Nothing unusual there.
But change is afoot for the upcoming Jazzfest, which opens April 27. For instance, you'll be able to sip champagne.
Just not in your La-Z-Boy.
For the first time, wine and champagne will be sold at the Fair Grounds alongside the ubiquitous Miller products.
But in response to fest-goers' ever-more elaborate seating contraptions, the festival's new regulations -- unveiled last week along with the "cubes" of performance times and stages -- specifically prohibit "large chairs with rockers, foot rests, side tables, etc."
Single, collapsible chairs, the sort that fold into a tidy carrying case, are still permitted -- but not immediately in front of the main Acura and Gentilly stages. Those areas are now designated "standing room only."
Any refinement, however subtle, is scrutinized by those who hold the fest dear as evidence of this or that agenda or attitude.
Prohibiting campsites near the two largest stages, for one, makes sense. What was once a smattering of chairs has devolved in recent years into a logjam resembling the reserved seat section at an amphitheater, but without neat, navigable rows. Banning chairs will allow emergency personnel and regular folks to move about more freely.
Also, "reserving" real estate with ropes, cords, tape or anything larger than a 6-by-8-foot blanket or tarp is no longer allowed. Grabbing land as if it were the neutral ground at Endymion isn't very neighborly.
Enforcing these new policies will be tricky. The plan is for security to direct early arrivals with chairs beyond the designated buffer zone, closer to the sound board. Whether later arrivals honor the same flexible boundary is another matter. The hope is that the spirit of community prevails, so this buffer zone can be "amoeba-like and accommodating," a Jazzfest staffer said.
Elsewhere, flag poles cannot be hammered into the ground, to prevent damage to subterranean electrical and irrigation lines. And expect the usual searches of bags and vehicles for contraband, including outside food and beverage. However, it's still OK to enter with up to one liter of water in a factory-sealed container, an oddly underutilized privilege.
Questions about these and other policies? Look for Jazzfest's new "answer people" stationed outside the gates.
As for the music, you're on your own. The release of the cubes makes it possible to plot one's day, savoring the bounty and mourning the inevitable scheduling conflicts.
The simultaneous Rod Stewart and Norah Jones sets on the first Saturday, for instance, will generate considerable angst within a certain baby boomer demographic.
Take note, Norah and Rod -- come out swinging, or your audience will migrate to the opposite end of the Fair Grounds.
No act is likely to trigger mass weeping like Bruce Springsteen's "My City of Ruins" did last year. Emotions for the second post-K fest won't be quite so raw.
And "Maggie May," though tragic in its own way, doesn't evoke the same pathos.
Stewart is taking a break from his latest easy-listening tour to allegedly deliver a "stripped-down" show at Jazzfest. Here's hoping he has some fun with it and strays from his usual script.
Same with ZZ Top. "Tush" and "La Grange" are obviously awesome, but Billy, Dusty and Frank have banged them out the same way for 30 years. At the UNO Lakefront Arena in 2003, they felt a bit tired. Billy Gibbons is a bad-ass guitarist -- Jazzfest would be the perfect setting for him to stretch out on a set of old-school blues.
When the Neville Brothers opted out of the 2006 Jazzfest, at least Art Neville represented with the original Meters. The Meters reunion appears to have run out of steam. Neither the original nor Funky Meters are on the schedule.
Instead, Cyril Neville makes his first Jazzfest appearance since his post-K move to Austin. He'll join the New Orleans Social Club, an all-star aggregation that took shape in the tumultuous weeks after the storm. In addition to Cyril, the Social Club includes keyboardist and funk pioneer Willie "Tee" Turbinton and Meters guitarist Leo Nocentelli. Maybe Art Neville will make a surprise appearance, too.
Expect a bigger than usual crowd for traditional jazz drummer Bob French's second Sunday show in the AT&T/WWOZ Jazz Tent, thanks to special guests Harry Connick Jr. and Branford Marsalis. French has a CD coming out on Branford's Marsalis Music record label; Marsalis and Connick also appear on the album.
Later that afternoon, the Radiators reclaim their traditional end-of-fest slot on the Gentilly Stage, while Connick closes out the Acura Stage with his big band. His only previously scheduled Fair Grounds set with the big band was rained out in 2004.
Jazzfest producers have also tinkered with the festival's layout. The addition of large video screens at the Acura Stage enhanced the viewing experience there. This year, the Gentilly and Congo Square stages get their own screens.
The return of the Southern Comfort Blues Tent is another sign of post-K recovery; its roster is weighted heavily to locals.
To reduce sound bleed and improve pedestrian flow, the Blues, Jazz and Gospel tents -- all of which are bigger -- have swapped positions in the Heritage Square corner of the grounds.
Once again, the Allison Miner Music Heritage Stage -- the "interview stage" previously housed in the Grandstand -- is combined with the Lagniappe Stage in the paddock area. In years past, such heavyweights as Brian Wilson and Bob Weir sat for interviews. Unfortunately, none of this year's marquee names are featured in Q&A sessions.
After a one-off experience with Basin Street Records, the Record Tent is now under the auspices of Borders Books & Music.
Oysters on the half-shell return to the paddock area. Food booths also are restored to the Congo Square area; the total number of booths is up to 67 from last year's 59.
What's the cheapest way to buy Jazzfest tickets? Pay with cash at the New Orleans Arena box office.
Purchasing the $35 advance tickets online or with a credit card increases the cost to almost the $45 at-the-gate price, thanks to Ticketmaster's "convenience" charge of $6.90 per ticket and another "processing" fee of $4 per order.
The big-dollar "Big Chief VIP" packages, meanwhile, reportedly are selling briskly. Seems some folks want to sip their champagne above the fray.
And for them, chairs are provided.
. . . . . . .\
OK, I've been doing some catch-up on some of these threads and on the Times Picayune site and I saw this article. I know that this was discussed in another thread somewhere (too lazy to try to find it), but I thought FestyDave was insistent that outside food was OK to bring in. I'm not surprised that we have problems at the gate when the local paper prints things that are not true.
No doubt! It is NOT against the rules to bring food in...but why would you?

What about Camelback type hydration systems? I've worn mine in the last 4yrs with only squinty looks from the security detail.
Surprisingly, I've only ever seen a couple other guys with them before--they're perfect for festing: hands free hydration while you dance, eat, drink beer, and you can keep the bare necessity of goods in there as well.

I've brought my camelback.
I used to fill it with ice water.
One time I was told at the gate to empty it, unfortunately, it was the day I rode the Fest Express, so leaving and finding a different security line was not an option.
So now, I just fill it with ice at the hotel, and once inside the Fest, I fill it with water in the Grandstand.
I agree it's a good thing to have - mine holds 2 liters, which would cost about 10 bucks at the beverage stands. And drinking water along wth the beer helps keep you hydrated in the heat.

Hey, there, FestyDave:
We had a blast this 1st weekend of 07 Fest. And in my tradition of all the years (since my 1st in 89), I "took" quite a few photos at the Fais Do Do cam with my sweetheart. So, any idea when we'll be able to view the Fais Do Do 15 second photos at the Fest website? (the current click on the banner of the Fais Do Do cam just opens a page with the music schedule cubes.) Thanks for any insights you can provide.
Jeffrey, from Woodstock to Fest, it's always been good, it's always been a long strange trip!

I saw some HUMONGOUS umbrellas out on the fairgrounds and some very cool chair shades. Apparently, the "rules" are meant to be broken -- and next year I will definitely need to have some other form of shade than just a handheld umbrella if I want to see acts at the outdoor stages. I totally could not stay at Gentilly for Papa Grows Funk at 12:40 -- too hot and sunny, couldn't stand it.

I bought two of those little battery-operated ten dollar fans that squirt water and never let them get empty. It was key to staying out there.
Make that investment next year!
And the chairs being back is huge, never change that rule back.

I had my mom with me who I would have given no chance in staying out there all day with that heat, she's 60+ and I sat/stood next to her and sprayed her all day long each day and she made it. What a trooper!!!!

I'm sure this has been discussed on here but why is the blues stage next to the jazz stage and not the gospel?
It's frustrating trying to hear at the jazz tent while the bass from the blues tent just powers through everything.

At "nearly 60", I did pretty well too. Although, I've been known to leave because of heat/humidity before too. What saved me this year was the water spray fan (Thanks Lis!), the Tilly neck wraps (Thanks, Lis!), drinking lots of water and breaking down and wearing a hat, which I never do, on hot days.

Hi Festy - putting my vote in as well. The standing room only sections were wonderful. It made such a difference in my fest experience. It was wild being able to cut across the FRONT of the stage to go get food, etc. I think it definitely did what it was intended to do. I was a walk up to several acts at the big stages, and easily moved through the crowd for a better view.

One thing that didn't make sense to me, though, was dividing the Congo stage in two halves by running barricades down the middle. I think if you put SRO section in front of Congo it would work great.

My thoughts about the improvements -
1) SRO sections were wonderful - Well enforced at Acura, tarps began to creep in a lot at Gentilly. Didn't love the divisions at Congo and Gentilly (second weekend) that ran all the way back to the sound stage (got cut off from my wife, food and beer once), but if that is the price I have to pay, it is well worth it. Also the Fais Do Do stage needs an official dancing area. There were several times when the dancers got squished out of there.
2) Blues Tent - although bigger and easier to get in from the sides, it still was Horrible. Seems like most of the time the grass area was filled up with vacant tarps and chairs and it was very hard to get in. I don't get why it is so important to keep the Aisles clear in the formal seating area, but have no way to get to those clear Aisles because of all of the chairs and tarps surrounding them. PLEASE consider making a portion of the grass standing only.
3) New tent locations - worked great for me - tents seemed bigger and roomier and since I don't get to jazz much, it didn't bother me that it was so far away. I still think the sound in the gospel tent is a bit too loud. I also didn't mind that the crafts were split up (I wonder if the vendors did)
4) Wine & Champagne - don't care, but happy it is there for those that do.
Thanks for listening

Agreed! I didn't like the fact that every time i went to the Blues Tent -- even for non "big-name" acts, I had to stand outside the tent.

Me, too.
I did appreciate the efforts of the tent ushers to keep the aisles clear. Once you got through the glob at the entrances, you could get to where you were going (if you had somewhere to go). Sometimes I would stay in my seat in the Blues Tent, missing an act on another stage, just I could be in place for a later blues act. For example, I missed Steely Dan, staying in my seat so that I would be in place for Taj. That turned out to be a good move, 'cause I loved Marva Wright, especially when Allen Toussaint and Paul Schafer sat in. And, I NEVER would have gotten back in and fould a place to sit, stand, or even breathe, if I had left. Either the Blues Tent needs to be bigger, or the bigger blues acts need to be at Acura or Gentilly.
Just IMHO.

some folks were truly just trying to get back to their camps - they just waited a little too long to make the move.
they said 'polaroid/sprint/gentilly/highest bidder' stage would be larger this year. just the stage (new screen) and the acts were bigger. it should have been apparent some of the BNA there would grossly overcrowd the area.

several years ago, at a totally different festival (that's to throw off security), i met some folks with a large pvc pipe flag pole that just happened to be large enough to fit 12 ounce cans.

In all of the other tents, except for maybe the Jazz tent, folks dance in their seats or in the aisles, etc. (gospel tent, economy hall tent, kids tent).
The jazz tent isn't a problem, since much of the music is not really dance music anyway.
But the BLUES are a genre' that you just gotta dance to!!! They don't even let you stand in front of your seats - folks hollering to sit down, etc. You'd NEVER see that in the Gospel Tent, for example.

Some other dos and don'ts worth reminding everyone of:
Allowed:
Small bags and backpacks
Not Allowed:
Wagons or carts
Glass, personal tents, metal poles, shade canopies, beach or pole-style umbrellas
Please continue to post comments and questions.
I have a day pack that has luggage wheels and handle, do you think this will be allowed?
How do people get metal poles to stake their PVC in? Or how do you keep a flag flying in stiff wind without a pole if you won't be plopped in your chair for the entire day?
Thanks so much!

those rules have been around a long time.
we wheel in our stuff all the time (soft cooler with wheels & handle).
if the off chance they tell you no, try the other entrance.
but i'll be shocked if you are stopped for that.
no metal poles is to prevent damage to the sprinkler system - they dont want you poking things in the ground.
but you'll see every banned item inside the fest. not sure how they get them in. and if i knew, i wouldnt post it here. ;)
some people stake their poles to existing structures/poles at the fairgrounds. some folks illegally stake them out. some folks hold them. some use umbrella stands or other creative ideas.

Hi Barb,
Thanks a bunch! Now I know I can get my backpack in safely, I guess I'll need it to wheel in some ballast for the chair I'll be duct taping my flag pole to!

Never sink anything into the turf at the Fairgrounds. Period.
Stoopid. Idjitness. End of story.
Get creative. Bring in some plastic bags and steal some dirt off the track. Or raid the sandbox at the Kid's Tent. Sandbags work !!!

Found this in a 2007 thread. Thanks Fest Nut:
Stakes are definitely out. The "pole police" will be watching -- someone stuck one through an underground watering system one year and flooded the Acura area -- yuck!
If you're seated, your flag can be secured to your chair or 2 chairs by bungee or duct tape or wide clear tape (with backpacks/ice chest or weight of some sort to hold them down when you get up to dance). The winds play heck with the flags attached to the chairs when you're not sitting in them, so height plays a big part. Too low and you're in the way of others, too high and the chairs go flying with the flag and pole.
If you move around a lot, the bungees work easier for set up and take down.
If you're stationary all day, you can set up next to a trash barrel or some other structure and then bungee or tape your pole to that. They don't like you attaching to the fenced-in areas of speakers and such, but you can always try. The worst that can happen is they'll make you take it down (unless you have gone off and left it unmanned when they come by, then they'll take it away to never-never land).
If you move from stage to stage make sure your pole is telescopic so you can adjust the height to the winds. With a nice gust of wind the flag can dip rapidly toward the ground and hit other festers (warning--they may get upset).
I hope this helps -- it's all I can remember at the moment! You can try the search button at the top of the page to see if you can find the original postings.
Bon Fete!

most of the discount/department/stuff stores (walmark, sam's club, kmart, target) carry soft coolers with wheels & handles, but beware of the big ones. probably more than you need. sometimes the weather or the crowd does not allow for rolling, you need to carry it. i think i've seen then at Walgreens also, and they may have smaller versions.
the larger ones (still within fest limits of course) are a good base camp cooler that you refill. the more you move around the smaller your cooler should be.

The rules say the no larger than a 12-pack cooler. They may not allow that big one in.
I use one like this, it's a small day pack on top with the bottom section being a lined cooler. Hold 8 beers plus ice:

put the chairs on top with a bungie cord - after clearing security.

hmm. i wonder if we have any old maps at swagland.com
i have a couple on the back of old tees. but probably not the right year.
maybe in old programs or offbeats.
HOB stage came in where fais do do is, moving Fais do do to the field, approx accross from ms. lena's cold cold beer. then they switched back, then the blues stage was moved a little further/closer to rayban/acura stage.
then they started moving stuff (jazz tent & gospel tent) off the grass and onto the parking lot - and expanding the large stages. at some point they did away with the blues stage (which by then i think had anothe name) and put up the popeyes blues tent (maybe the year they tried a 1st thursday).
i guess i dont remember it as well as i thought.
and the locale for the stage wasnt always ideal - often too small an area for the crowd. and usually the BNBA would be on one of the larger end stages.

The Blues Tent does still drive me a little nuts. I tried going for the Scofield, Porter collaberation last year, but I couldn't sit down that long. I will be bummed if Derek and Susan are there, because the tent just isn't good for jamming blues that you want to dance to. Please put them ouside at a stage! Thanks.

It appears as though the Blues Tent has been around longer than I recollected. The last year the Blues Stage was sponsored by the House of Blues was 2001. The Fest first went to the blues tent in 2002 which was unsponsored and then the Popeye's Blues Tent emerged in 2003.

Yes, that Blues Stage was getting crowded before it went inside. I do really like the Jazz & Heritage Stage where it is now. I think, like Fais Do Do, it is just about perfect. But the Blues tent is too small for some of the major acts that appear there. For us who travel from stage to stage, it's pretty tough even to get inside for the Blues BNAs. And that no dancing thing is one of the weirdest parts of Jazz Fest. Perhaps the number one thing to fix on a list that isn't very long.

It could be an easy fix, IMAO.
There is a large section in the back with no folding chairs. That is supposed to be the dancing area. But festgoers come in early and set up their own chairs in this area.
If fest wanted it to be all seating, they'd put the chairs all the way back. I really think they intended that area to be for dancing.
So - instead of the Blues Tent Nazis getting on everyone's case for standing up and dancing, they could police that area and not let any private chairs be set up.

peeps set up their chairs and then leave for other venues, coming back for a spot at the end of the day. empty chairs taking up the dance room in the mean time.
