Maybe a bit to early to book a hotel yet but I started check some affordable hotels. Just in case.
Anyone experienced the Midtown Hotel at Tulane Venue, near Xavier University?
It's never too early to start looking, though sometimes the best deals may appear later.
I've never stayed at the Midtown. The neighborhood is a little dicey, I think, and it's not convenient to any nigtlife. The reviews on TripAdvisor are pretty bad:

Not sure what dates you need or what you're budget is, but I see $100/nt there for 1st weekend. For that amount, I'm sure you can get something nicer and better located (downtown or even in the Quarter), if you're patient and watch for deals on Priceline or Hotwire. Keep an eye on my blog (http://swag.livejournal.com/), or subscribe via email, to get alerts as the deals arise.

Meanwhile I booked B & B, very close to the French Quarter, 100 dlrs, breakfast included (of course, that's why it's called B and Breakfast.. ). It's run by the widow of late tromboneplayer Louis Nelson. Yesterday i booked my flight, so except for the festivaltickets, I'm ready for it.:)

I actually checked out a few of the hostels that Swag had mentioned on his website. Not only is it considerably cheaper to stay at one, but you're only required to pay 10% of the total cost at the time you reserve a dorm.
However, I've never stayed at a hostel before. Any of you have an opinion on the idea?

My wife & I stay at the India House every time that we are in New Orleans. Great fun, if you are not uptight! We actually got married in the backyard this past jazzfest. They have a pool that is clean, a housekeeper, so the rooms are clean & you get to meet fun-loving people from all over the world. They usually set up their own space at the fest too!

Well, uptight is definitely not a word I'd use to describe my friend and I. Literally the few hours we spend in the hotel are used to catch some shuteye and to shower before we head out again. The places we've stayed are far from upscale and it's by no means put a damper on the experience at all. Essentially, price is our main focus, with amenities on the lower end of the list.

Well I hope to have a beer with you in the backyard at the fest. See you in April!

Well, I most definitely will be there. Already begun planning and will be booking some form of lodging within the two weeks.

I'm now curious about Priceline and might give that a shot first. However, I've never used it before and was wondering if any of you fellow festers have had luck and get your opinions.

If you go to my bidding advice page at http://jazzfest.swagland.com/bidding.html, scroll to the bottom, and you'll find links to past years' jazzfest results. That should give you an idea of what to expect. There's no reason not to expect similar deals for Jazzfest 2011.
That said, this far in advance, the deals are sporadic. One may pop up at any time, or we not not see any more come until Christmastime or later. So if it's your first time bidding, don't go overboard if you don't get accepted. If your target price is $90/nt and that fails, don't start bidding $95 and $100, not with over 6 months to go.
And finally, make sure you understand and are okay with the Priceline process - in particular, that it's prepay, non-refundable and non-changeable.
Feel free to email me thru my site if you have specific questions.

Thanks Swag! That bidding link off your site will be super helpful and make me feel a lot more confident when I do decide to move forward.
I had stayed at India House a couple of summers ago and was excited to come back for Jazz Fest, but unfortunately they are all booked up.
Anyone have any other good suggestions for a hostel or cheap place to stay?
Thanks!

Hi Amy! Woohoo on attending your first Jazzfest!!
I love the India House! Bummer that they're all booked up. The only other hostel I've stayed at in nola is the Marquette House. But unfortunately the owner was really letting the property go and it got to the point that I just couldn't stay there anymore (and I am very easygoing!). Haven't stayed there since '08, but just wanted to give you a heads up that I really can't recommend that one unless it's been fixed up a lot. There are a couple more hostels on hostelworld.com, but I haven't stayed at any of them. Good luck with your search!
