Those are VERY important questions, although I'd bet good money the answer to the second one is "no", :(

The beer situation was slightly remedied last year with the Southern Comfort slurpee tent. The proliferation of Miller beer is what makes me hope fervently to be able to buy a Brass Pass this year. Liuzza's sells Abita.

You have to upload a small pic to a site like www.photobucket.com (http://www.photobucket.com) that allows hotlinking. Once uploaded, it gives you an URL that can be pasted into the box.
If you're graphics-challenged, send me a photo at rowdymom81 at aol.com and I'll send you the URL.

Oooh, now that's thinking bluesgirl! I hadn't even thought of that extra perk to the brass pass (which we are planning on going for this year!)

It's really great, at least in theory. In three years of BP'ing, I've left/returned to Fest only twice, both times to dink at Liuzza's.

Yeah, I'm thinking it might be theoretical, we can barely get to another stage or out for food, let alone off the grounds and then back! But you just never know . . . I actually don't mind the fest's beer offerings, yes, Abita would be sooo much better but any cold cold beer in the hot hot sun tastes good to me!

I'm splitting an Overpass with one of my first weekend buddies this year! All the benefits of the Brass Pass for both of us, something neither one of us would do on our own, and an extra $450 for OZ!

Cali's going to be in the house, but I too am wondering 3 or 4 days the second weekend. I plan to be there the whole week, but I want to plan the other days. As for the beer, keep at least one import. Mass produced domestic beer sucks!

I stayed at the Monteleone on business a few years ago. It's a great hotel, you can't go wrong. We always stop there to have a drink at the carousel bar. There is a $240/night price on Orbitz right now. Certainly steep, but Expedia has it listed in the $450 range.

We spent our honeymoon at the Royal Sonesta during Fest '84, very special! Bedroom was on one level, with a circular staircase going up to the 'living room'. Wet bar and seating, french doors opened out onto the pool courtyard.

It's pricing is competitive with other hotels of it's nature. We were booked at Omni Royal for 2 nights but we decided we should stay a 3rd nite and Omni couldn't accomodate. WTH? What evah .. so now we are secured at Chateau Sonesta but I'm still shopping. Ohhhh baby. It's on Poydras Street (parallel to Canal) and yes, I have stayed there. It is beyond divine. We used to eat lunch there all the time. They would always have a pasta bar and a great salad bar. I also got invited to this fancy schmancy Christmas Party there every year and it is to die for. They would have like 6 different stations of the most divine food. They even had a sushi station. They would also have this drawing every year on each floor and if they drew your name then you would get to stay in the suite at the end of the hall. I won one year and stayed in the Castle Suite with the most gorgeous antique furniture in it and they even had Napolean's bathtub in there. The bathroom was unbelievable. Walk in shower, lighted, mirrored sit down vanity. I still have a souvenir from that suite. It's the cutest little Q-tip and cotton swab container, lol. I love that thing. Good times were had by all that weekend. :D

They will each only play one day. They should announce which days in a week or three. Both are likely to play at the end of the day (5:30-7), but that won;t be announced until early April.
Just buy a regular fest ticket (one per day) and all the acts & stages are included.

two questions, what is an "instore" and where can I buy a nice folding chair in Nola? Thanks.
ozzie
03-02-2007, 08:23 PM
Steveo, instores are very cool live music performances in the LMF (and other?) music store.
Chairs... any day now there will be a great debate on whether or not to bring a chair, what type of chair to bring or not to bring and how to behave with your chair, should you bring it. Keep an eye out. :D
funkkjunkie
03-02-2007, 09:11 PM
Virgin and Tower records have both closed in new orleans so it's possible LOuisiana Music Factory on Decatur will have the only instores. Most of the instores are on the daze between fest weekends. Also on daze between will be mofest, Marcia Ball in Lafayette Park and Fan fest in Lafayette Park. You can buy a chair in nola. They actually sell chairs at fest. If you have a bag chair at home and you are flyng, you can check it or you can ship it to your hotel.
In-stores are musical performances, usually by locals, held in area music stores. They are held on the non-Fest days around Fest (Thursday before, Monday-Thursday between, Monday after). They are free, typically about 45-50 minutes long, and play to crowds anywhere from a couple of dozen to a couple of hundred. Often these are the same bands that will play to several thousand over the weekend at the Fest.
You can see the schedules for recent years' in store gigs here, and get an idea of the types of bands you might get to see:

I stayed at the Omni Royal Orleans for a couple nights just a few months after K*****a. It was lovely, historic, and a great location. I didn 't get to the rooftop pool but it is legendary. Convenient to K Pauls, Bacco, & other restaurants, too.
But from all I've read, the place I DREAM of staying at someday is Hotel Maison De Ville, in one of their courtyard or poolside suites or the Audobon cottages. Woah.

Greg and I usually go pretty close to opening time -- some of the best stuff is near the beginning of the day.
Of course, we often stop at Liuzza's ahead of time for a Bloody Mary and a visit with folks. :D

Gates oprn at 11:00 (sometimes at 10:45). I get there at 11:00 no matter what. Some gather at Liuzzas beforehand for bloody Marys. Some stroll in late. There are even large groups of people (Probably not Threadheads) that come in as late as 4PM (just for the Big Name Acts).
First stage that starts playing music is usually the Gospel Tent (11:10 or 11:15). Bands usually start on other stages more like 11:30. You will be able to tell once the cubes (a listing of each band's start and end time on each stage) come out. The cubes are extremely accurate -- 11:10 to 11:50 usually means exactly that. It is not like that at the clubs where 45 - 90 minutes late is usual starting time for a show.
Hope that helps

I start to panic if I'm not out at the Fair Grounds before 9:30-10:00. I've been known to get there around 8:30. If you think that is bad, I know someone who gets in line to park everyday at 6:30. Its kind of funny on Fri./Thur when your fighting the rush hour traffic to get out to the Fair Grounds. But if your normal like most people ;) then 11:00-11:30 should work. It gives you time to walk around and check things out before the crowds. I try to eat breakfast before 12n (no lines) & buy cds, books, posters and T-Shirts before the crowds.

I camp out at the gate starting at about 9:30 with a bloody mary - the gate opening can vary, SOMETIMES gates have been known to open early, like 10:45 - other times gates have opened late when they were having to deal with "ground" issues (i.e. putting out hay on all of the mud etc. 'cause weather may not have been perfect....)

the $5 chairs are usually only rated to about 150 or 175 pounds. the larger chairs vary, some are 200 or 225, a rare few go to about 275. many people weigh more than 175.
this is why you see broken chairs sometimes. especially if people flop down on them.
you can usually find the rating on that annoying tag on the chair.
