was fabulous tonight. Greg and I saw him at the Masonic Temple in Detroit with a sold-out very enthusiastic crowd. Van played a wide variety of new and old, including some interesting choices. Great time!

Hey Now Saturn, I am so happy for you guys!!! When Van is on, I feel he is a conduit to a higher force; inspirational, trancendant. His muse is unique, and when the Spirit moves him, I close my eyes and let myself get swept away.... I am active in the Van trading group, and when the discs start circulating, I will be sure to grab you a copy. So glad you made it! Matthew

I had heard that Van was like the little girl with the curl -- very very good, when good, but horrid when bad. But I have been such a fan for so long without having a chance to see him live that I paid outrageous ticket prices and took my chance. And it turned out great.

Van was one of four artists who Greg and I really really wanted to see before we die -- now there is only Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen (I have seen him, but Greg hasn't) and Zachary Richard left on the list.

Saw Tom in the early 80s... fantastic. The fella I was romancing at the time left in disgust mid-way through the show. Well that was one romance that was never gonna last!

He was at the Fairgrounds in '01, a great show, IMO. He did a night show before that which I heard was really bad.
That wasn't the first time at JF, but I can't remember what year that was, sometime in the '90s.

Van Morrison, Ray-Ban Stage, Jazzfest 1996 was one of THE worst sets of music I have seen ANYONE play. Thank-Jah when I saw him up here 3 years later he kicked ass. EXTREMELY moody and hit or miss.

Yeh, you rite amigo. My sister Rhonda is/was a HUGE Van fan and she was SO looking forward to that set at the fairgrounds. As I recall, it was pretty craptacular...lots of mumbling, back to the audience...just awful.

But that's just my opinion. I've read elsewhere that other people loved that set...for whatever reason.

Van Morrison has been in my top 20 all time favorites for as long as I can remember. But......I saw him for the first time at the Austin City Limits Fest this past September and well, lets just say I was waaaay disappointed. Guess I saw him on one of his 'off' days.

I love Bob Dylan too. But I remember seeing him in the late seventies at the Auditorium in New Orleans. Man did he stink up the place. He was singing for about 3-4 minutes when all of a sudden I heard, "Like a rolling stone...." I was floored that I couldn't even recognize one of his best tunes. Thank god for studio recordings, huh?

I've had that happen too when Dylan performs and I hate it :(. My hubby loves it when he reworks his songs. But it seems to me all his songs all sound alike when he does that.

Gees Saturn,
It never occured to me that he was 'reworking' his music! Changing it up a bit is great, but unrecognizable? Anyway, why screw around with perfection?

Okay, what's up with Tom Waits? Why do people like the guy? Jeff and saw him performing a song last night and both thought it was absolutely impossible to listen to (bad bad bad!!)

Well, he's definitely an acquired taste. Was it his Daily Show performance you saw? I saw it and thought it was just fine Tom Waits stuff. :D

I can't really explain why we like him, but we do -- anybody else got a good explanation?

It was, and we both thought it was just horrible! And it wasn't just me this time, Jeff has musical taste and he thought so too. Hmm, don't quite get it ;)

Hi Chas - that info hasn't been announced yet. The day will probably be announced in the next few days, but the time not til April sometime. Since he's a big name act, he'll probably be one of the last to go on - which is usually between 5-6 pm. Keep checking back here - folks here will know and you can bet they will tell, too!

Matt,

In the trading group, did anyone have a recording of Van's set from last year's fest?

His early material was such a cool mix of beat talking and cool cool jazz. I am talking about Nighthawks at the Dinner era...1977. Back when he was hanging w Riki Lee Jones.

Then...those rare gems like Franks Wild Years, Downtown Train etc. etc. But your right, a lot has been self indulgent stuff that never needed to be recorded. We like him for those rare gems that are so absolutly wonderful

He is in Sweden during this time. On Friday 4/25 he is in Malmo and on Saturday the 26th he is in Gothenburg. Don't see this one happening this year.
