What's your point, Stev-o?
I think his point is that it is an informative documentary about one of our great American cities that should be impressed upon the minds of as many people as possible? just a hunch.

??? I don't think one needs to worry too much about www.pbs.org being in the spam business. Thank you for a great link Steve.

Blues. You should be sure you have a good anti-virus piece of software as well as a good spam filter on your machine. You then would not have that worry. Ohio can tell you a couple, I am sure, that you could download into your machine for free from the internet. It is too risky to allow for problems to happen by not being protected.

I do have Norton with firewall, anti-virus, & spam blocker - try to run updates weekly - should this be sufficient?

It is too bad that the spammers have to ruin it for the legitimate folks out there. Glad I wasn't around then that Nixon sh%$ was going on....

Yeah, Bluesmama that should be more then adequate. But I am surprised with that, that it did not prompt you about that link before taking you to it. You should have gotten a warning that the website you were attempting to access was viral or spam.

something did flash on my screen before the computer shut down, but it was gone so fast I couldn't read it - when I got back online, everything seemed okay - so, no harm done (I hope)

Hey, Mama - I'm an IT professional (I do healthcare software tech support/training) and my experience is that the newer versions of Norton are crap . . . I highly recommend dumping it and using AVG Anti-Virus, which you can get for free here (with this computer-safe link):
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
It's the program that I and pretty much all of the IT colleagues that I work with use, I also recommend it to the clients I work with - it's MUCH more secure than Norton, the later versions of which has been shown to have many problems (resource hog, computer shutdown issues, security holes that hackers take advantage of, etc.).
I also use and recommend Spybot and AdAware for detecting and removing spyware - these are both excellent programs (again free!) that are well-renowned and respected and most importantly SAFE! If you want the links for those, just let me know and I'll be happy to post them.
:D

it's amazing - the things you can find out on this bored!
are the links pretty simple to download & install?
how do I dump Norton & should I do that first? just renewed it in November

The links are very simple to download and install and I'm happy to help if need be . . . what I do is download the new program first, but don't install it, until AFTER you uninstall the Norton.
To properly and completely uninstall the Norton, go to "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel - then find any and all Norton programs and just click on the uninstall button listed with each of those programs in there. That makes sure that all of the drivers and registry listings (a thingy deep in your computer that makes programs run) are correctly and SAFELY removed.
Then, I would reboot your computer and then when it comes back up - install the new AVG program! That should do it, there are preference settings in the AVG once it's installed that you can change/set and in the documentation that you should also download from them, they'll tell you more about that in detail.
It's very easy - my Mom did this on her computer, so I know that you can too!! :D
what is the backstory here? who is this nixon guy and what was the original link? what happened?

mno, a guy called revisiting nixon visited the bored and posted links to some How to jazzfest threads on another site. He posted these links on several threads here. Then he came back a few daze later and posted the links again. I believe amywinette counted 10 times. The links caused problems for some folks and it was decided we were being spammed. Threads were removed.

Thanks for the anti virus Info, I use Ad-Aware, also, I have a memory leak somewhere, computer is so slow,I want to smash my computer some times, maybe its just to old.
Zydekitten

You might also want to use Spybot - it can find some things AdAware may not find - I use both, back-to-back.
What kind of computer are you using?

Yeah, that's pretty ancient these days - but if it works for casual surfing of the Internets, and that's all you're using it for . . . if it ain't broke, don't fix it! :D
At some point though, you may want to trade up to a newer machine - Tiger.com is a GREAT place to get incredible prices on excellent computers!

Aww, it shouldn't take much time at all - depending on your computer's capabilities (processor speed, RAM, etc.) - probably about a half-hour to hour tops.
And yes, I'll be around if you need help - you can e-mail me at red_beansandrice@yahoo.com.
