G'day Oz ... cheer up, fest is ON next month. And just think, today will seem like a million miles away. I'm off in less than 3 weeks, doin' the road trip to Memphis and New Orleans. I'm ol' school traveller, and will be totally disconnected. But in the meantime, I'm sufferin' real badly from FOMS. And...oh shit, I have to laugh...I love the connections that this city can throw up. Our vet, who has cared with love for our hounds for over 20 + years, has a best mate playing at the fest!! True. I kid you not. I'm a hick from the hills from outside Melbourne and our local vet has a friend playin' at jazzfest. Holy shit! Andrew Hall's Society Brass Band! Mind you, they're playin' first Friday and the competition's a bit stiff, but who woulda thunk it...!

SYDNEY - Wild camels in drought-stricken Australia are in plague proportions, damaging the environment and property as they compete with native animals for food and water.

Camels "mad with thirst" recently rampaged through the Western Desert Aboriginal community of Warakurna, damaging toilets, faucets and air conditioners to find water.

"There were a couple of hundred — they get big mobs up here," the operator of the Warakurna Roadhouse said on Wednesday.

"They did a lot of damage searching for water, trampling air conditioning hoses, taps and pipes," she said from the remote roadhouse, about 500 miles west of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.

Australia has the world's largest wild camel population. Camels were first brought to the country in the 18th century to help explorers venture into the dry interior.

"An estimated one million feral camels, whose numbers double every eight years, compete with native animals and livestock, threaten native plants, wreck fences, bores and tanks, and invade Aboriginal sites," said Glenn Edwards, from the Desert Knowledge Cooperative Research Center.

The center, established to pursue economic projects for outback Aborigines, said a national feral camel management plan was urgently needed.

The environmental impact of feral camels was most prominent in Australia's biggest state of Western Australia, where half the nation's feral camels are thought to roam.

Australia's worst drought in 100 years is to blame for the recent rampage by camels, but increasing numbers of wild camels has caused serious environmental, economic and cultural damage right across the outback for years, said Edwards, who works for Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife service. A national camel management plan should see a combination of methods to reduce camel numbers, from culling to live exports, the center said.

"Some culling will be unavoidable," Edwards said in a statement ahead of a camel management meeting in Perth on Thursday. "In unpopulated areas, for example in the Simpson Desert, culling will be the only option."

Most camels are currently exported live to Southeast Asia where they are slaughtered.

The Centralian Advocate newspaper in Alice Springs this month reported thousands of camels were dying of thirst at Docker River some 370 miles west of Alice Springs, but local Aborigines refuse to cull the thirsty animals.

"The camels do a lot of damage to the land, and when there's no water, they come into the community and cause damage," Docker River community adviser Chris Moon told the newspaper.

The camel problem was so bad at the even more remote Warakurna, a community of 140 people, that hunters had been hired to kill 100 camels a week, said the newspaper.

Warakurna will freeze the meat and transport it to Perth in Western Australia as pet meat, said the newspaper.

Nah, we're all mountains and rainforest so only camels are in wildlife parks. Plenty of feral fellas up in the rainforest though. One day I'm gonna harsh their mellow and tell them the Vietnam war is over.

Didn't know we had such a camel problem... spent years in outback Western Australia and didn't see any evidence of it. Anyway, I thought camels were good in droughts/deserts. Gonna check it out though. We have a bad history of introducing critters, leaving them to their own devices and then saying... oh look at that, we have a problem. Up our way it's the evil Cane Toad. ugh

Camels were actually introduced into Australia in the late 19thC by Afghan cameleers as a means of transport (people and goods) into the red centre. When the train finally went through from Adelaide to Alice Springs (called the Ghan, as a corruption of Afghan), the camels became redundant and were released into the wild where they have done very well! Australia now exports camels to Saudi Arabia...hahahahaha! Over the generations, the original Afghans assimilated into the wider community...there are many people in Central Australia who can claim descent from these original Afghan cameleers. As for other "feral" animals in Oz, apart from some of the human inhabitants (!) - there are vast herds of wild donkeys and goats on the fringes of the central deserts and water buffalo and horses in the wet tropics (good food source for the crocs). The worst feral animals are foxes and wild domestic cats which are decimating a lot of the indigenous animal species ...oh, and of course as Ozzie says, the horrible cane toad.
