Taxi fare info
After yesterday's post about taxis to fest, I got some emails about fares. Here's a review of New Orleans taxi fares, which went up last summer.

The meter rate is $3.50 for the first 1/8 mile, 25 cents for each 1/8 mile after that, and $22/hour when not moving. There's a charge of $1 for each extra passenger (after the first). There is no longer any fuel surcharge.

Airport trips are now a flat rate of $33 for 1-2 people, or $14/person for 3 or more. This is valid to or from the airport, to anywhere in the city of New Orleans, except east of Elysian Fields or the West Bank. If you travel to those areas, you pay the flat rate to the boundary (Elysian Fields, or the tollbooth for the bridge), and then they start the meter.

There's $10 minimum per trip (not per person) for moving luggage between hotels, and a $10 minimum for trips to & from the Greyhound & Amtrak station. If you visit a grocery store, the trip back has a $7 minimum.

The special event rate is now $5/person (up from $4 last year) or the meter rate, whichever is higher. This includes trips to and from the Fairgrounds for Jazzfest. Expect a meter rate of about $10-15 from the Quarter or downtown, so usually with 3 or more, the flat rate will apply. Some cabbies will try to charge a flat rate other trips (not allowed). If you ever get in a cab and the driver doesn't start the meter, ask right away what he plans to charge, and if you think it's a ripoff, just get out.

I will be in a group of 4 - will taxis in NO allow one person to sit up front or would we have to wait for a van? Thanks in advance.

although i dont think they let us cram 6 passengers in one taxi, i am almost certain they allow 1 passenger in the front seat. the more people, the more money they make.

I just called United Cab (522-9771 - put that number in your phone) and they allow four people in a cab.

Where those four are sitting is up to the driver.....but there is no prohibition on a front seat passenger.

Is there another cab company for a backup that can be trusted? There used to be Yellow Cab, I think
