We'll be staying at the Prytania Park Hotel and looking for some neighborhood favorites. Any recommendations?

I stay in the Lower Garden every year. The Avenue Pub and Lucky's are two low frills neighborhood bars right on St. Charles Aveune. The St. Charles Tavern is also a 24-hour diner with decent food.

The St. Charles Tavern is an old favorite of mine---Even at 3am, it is usually hopping and they always do a great job with breakfast items as well as other New Orleans classics like shrimp creole or a very tasty fried oyster po-boy..........
(I once nearly declared my undying love for a stunning waitress at SCT that I was smitten by, but I lost my nerve and instead fell asleep in my veggie omlette)

Thank you HurtDog and MormonMatthew--good suggestions. MormonMatthew, I loved your "love" story. Very funny and very much a typical, late-night in NOLA.
Just tried a new-to-me spot on Magazine between the Bulldog and the Rendezvous last week - The Rum House - it was very good (try the Taco Trifecta) and yes, they have a Rum Bar in addition to great Carribean cuisine. Very casual place, would be ideal for the fest-goer on the prowl for good eats on Magazine. (I have no connection to the place other than the fact that I liked the food...)

Thanks for this. It looks very tasty. Mmmm, rum! One of the things on my "souvenir" list to take home from NOLA is always a bottle of Bacardi Anjeo rum. We get every other kind of Bacardi up here, but not the Anjeo. Don't know why. Luckily, with proper padding and multiple plastic bags, we have never had a bottle break in our luggage.

Please also consider taking home a bottle (or three!) of Old New Orleans Rum. Better yet--tour the distillery and take home the special pack that has the Crystal, Amber, Cajun Spiced, and the *Ten Year rums. You won't regret it ;)!
*Can't be purchased anywhere other than the distillery.

Sounds great to me! I'll have to table the visit 'till next trip, but I'll try some for sure. Thanks for the tip!

a thank you from me as well for suggestions:) staying at the Avenue Plaza on St. Charles (next to Igor's-mmm bloody mary's) for most of my trip and want to check out some neighborhood eats. Avenue Pub looks like a cool spot for lunch or late night with a great selection of beers and read that the food is really good http://www.avenuepub.com/
Rumhouse looks tasty too! think there is a Magazine stroll in my future...

was investigating this topic earlier and, while i'm not sure if this is technically considered "lower garden district," it is about three blocks from where i'm staying and looked interesting...
