I am flying out of NO on Tues. because it'll save me $150 on the airflight and my question is what will I do on Monday, May 3. Looking at the NO Visitors Guide I see that the Zephyrs have a home baseball game and that's a real possibility for me. How close is the airport to the ballfield? Is there a hotel/motel near the ballfield? Should I simply stay in the FQ and take public transportation to the game? The more I think of it I would like to see some minor league baseball.

The Zephyrs play in Metairie. The stadium is on Airline along the route of the Airport "Express" bus line. They are the Marlins AAA team. You can sit on the levee for $6, or in a seat for 8.

I've been trying to get to Zephyrs game for years. We were trying to have a TH Day but the schedule was changed and it just didn't work out :(.
I'd go to the game!!

The Zephyrs are a lot of fun and the park is right near the airport, but you wouldn't want to stay in any hotels on Airline Hwy near it (not because of proximity to Fest reasons, but because of... uh... seediness factors...). For the weekend, you could stay wherever (downtown, Metairie, etc.), and perhaps get a one-night stay at an airport hotel or at one of the chains in the Elmwood (Clearview Pkwy) area, which is not too far from the ballpark. That way you would be close to the airport on Tuesday when you were leaving.
I do recommend the Z's game though - lots of fun.

One year we were bumped from our flight and stayed at a hotel across from the airport. We took a cab to the game.It wasn't too far.We thought there would be cabs waiting after the game but there weren't.Someone in the stadium office called a cab for us.We got the impression that calling for a cab was rare and we had to wait quite a while for it to come. But if we get bumped again this year,I'm sure we'll do it again!

Yeah, there isn't much in that area except the ballpark, so it's not worth a cabbie's time to hang around out there. Ball games are generally family fare for locals, and locals come in cars. I'd imagine you could call one over from the airport area, but in a city like New Orleans, airline highway (vs. the Quarter) is the last place a cab would be lingering, looking for a fare... :)
If you check with the hotels in the Elmwood (Clearview) area, one of them might have a shuttle to the game (or just a shuttle, and so little traffic that they'd be willing to take you to the game).

I've taken the Airport bus line from downtown and it takes about 45 minutes to get to the park. I had a copy of the bus schedule and it came pretty much on time. It's only runs once about every 45 minutes or more, so if you take the bus, make sure you don't miss the bus, which lets you off at the edge of the stadium parking lot. I had a good time at the park.
