I just love Boeheim too! This was a snub but here is my take.

I think part of the problem was that the selection committee was trying to figure out the Big East conference schedule. Multiple head off's between other teams and Syracuse and then Syracuse only played others only once. There was also the non conference play that may have confused some selection committee members. Not that I know any better;)

Another factor (even though I am a huge Big East fan) is the lack of Big East teams selected.

There is always next year, however the NIT is more appealing now.

I guess those wins at home over NY-Stony Brook, Binghampton and The Northwest New Hampshire Culinary School didn't help them much.

I like the Gators too but since I am a really old Hoya when Ewing played for Thompson and now younger Ewing plays for younger Thompson...I would just love to return to the day....when I was much younger.

Noah is really fun to watch. Glad he returned to carry out the dream. I would be happy for them.

For me it is pretty much anyone but Carolina cause I love the Big East

Now I will duck and run for cover!!! North Carolina is fairly close to Virginia you know;)

Ok, ya got me. The team *simulated* a road trip by taking the long way around to the dome. That's almost the same, isn't it?

I think Jim Boeheim looked at a road map and fainted. This year, that was almost enough since the committee was out to shaft the mid majors.

I think the committe shafted NOLA. Florida vs. AZ/Purdue winner is nowhere as appealing as a Marquette/Mich St. winner.

and Memphis vs. NV/Creighton is ho-hum as opposed to a BC/Tx Tech winner. Or better yet give NOLA the South Regional 3 vs. 14 and 6 vs. 11 games (Tx A&M/Penn and Louisville/Stanford).

I complain b/c I bought tix a long time ago and every other regional is selling on StubHub and eBay for more than face value. I'm going to take a hit on my extra tix.

All the ranked big east teams went and then Villanova. Syracuse was ranked higher in the big east heading into the big east tournament, so I don't understand the logic of nova over cuse for the tournament, especially for a team that has won the big east tourney 2 years in a row and a national title just a few yrs ago as a 7 seed! Boeheim is a master and they got screwed. Oh well.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. However, if you think my Tigers are ho-hum, you obviously have not watched them play. They may well lose, probably when they go 1 for 500 at the free-throw stripe, but they are far from ho-hum. Even Bob Knight would agree with that.

Katrina damage is eye-opener for Gators
Donovan shows his players some stunning sights in New Orleans.
By ANTONYA ENGLISH
Published March 16, 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NEW ORLEANS - Florida coach Billy Donovan is always looking for opportunities to teach his players something other than the game of basketball. On Thursday, the Gators got a very sober teaching moment when they traveled through one of the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina.

"We had the opportunity to practice over at Delgado Community College and the bus driver took us through that Lakeview area and some areas that were really hit hard," Donovan said. "I don't know if our guys really understand, if people really understand, just the recovery that is going on in this city and just the amount of disruption that happened to this city. ... You're talking about 18 months removed from the storm and to see blocks and blocks and blocks of empty and vacant homes, some homes not there at all, people trying to pick up and start over, it's a very, very humbling experience."

The Florida players were stunned by what they say.

"It's so sad that a year and a half later, there's still so much destruction," junior forward Joakim Noah said. "I think that coach really wanted us to see it. You see it on TV once in awhile, but it really puts things in perspective. It makes you realize how lucky we are, we get to play basketball."

Have I mentioned S.I.U. lately? SALUKI BASKETABALL baby!!!!! Bring on Kansas, we fear no one!!!!

"Southern Illinois attacks teams with its stifling man-to-man pressure and then takes its chances at the other end, wearing teams down until they make a critical mistake. "It's kind of like, I guess, the equivalent of smash-mouth football," said Virginia Tech center Coleman Collins, whose team plays the Salukis today. "You know what they're going to do but they're going to do it every time and do it well. It's just on you to stop it." "

"Outlook: Southern Illinois wins by playing smart, energetic basketball. If they end up playing a highly-seeded team somewhere down the line that relies too much on their athleticism and ability to win one-on-one battles, Southern Illinois can take them down."

Look Out, NCAAs: Salukis Are Still Alive
The Associated Press
By RUSTY MILLER
March 18, 2007

The team that no one wants to play is still playing

Compared to practice, sometimes Southern Illinois' games are almost like a day off for the Salukis.

Driven by the tenacious defense instilled during those workouts -- and three big 3-pointers by Jamaal Tatum -- Southern Illinois pulled away from Virginia Tech 63-48 Sunday in the second round of the West Regional.

Tatum, the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year, scored 21 points. The Salukis have won 15 of 16, and set a school record for victories in a season.

This win was due to defense -- which is nothing new for kids who must buy into the concept that defense wins games or else you might want to find another place to play.

"We play so hard in practice that when we go against other teams it's almost easier," guard Bryan Mullins said.

The Salukis advance to meet top-seeded Kansas in a regional semifinal on Thursday night in San Jose, Calif. Rest assured that they don't want to face a team so dedicated to floor burns and physical play.

"A lot of teams go out and say, 'I'm going to stop my man.' But if we don't stop our man, we know we have help," Tatum said. "Coach talks about not playing selfish defense. We know that our teammates will help us out."

Tony Young added 17, Mullins 11 and Randall Falker 10 points and 12 rebounds for Southern Illinois (29-6), which surpassed the victory total from the 2000-01 team that also made it to the round of 16.

It wasn't all defense. The Salukis matched their season best with 12 3-pointers on 21 attempts.

"Since everyone knows us for our defense and we play so hard on defense, people don't realize that we can score," Mullins said. "We've been getting a lot better on offense. That showed today."

Jamon Gordon had 16 points and Deron Washington added 15 for fifth-seeded Virginia Tech (22-12), which hadn't been held to fewer than 54 points all season. Zabian Dowdell, a first-team All-ACC guard who came in averaging 18 a game, scored seven points.

"They are a strong defensive team," Washington said. "We couldn't get any easy buckets to get us going. It was frustrating."

In practice, the Salukis play a game with no fouls and no out of bounds that coach Chris Lowery calls "Keep Playing." There's no whining, which develops toughness.

"That's how we teach them, just to play no matter the circumstance," Lowery said.

Tatum had hit the decisive 3 to break a late tie when the teams met back in November at a tournament in Florida, a game the Salukis won 69-64.

SIU's fans chanted "De-fense! De-fense!" and the Salukis -- third in the nation allowing 56.3 points a game -- responded during a 16-2 run bridging the halves. Forget flashy dunks or no-look passes, the spurt was built on man-to-man defense and a couple of timely shots. The crowd cheered louder after defensive stops than after baskets.

Ahead 22-20, the Salukis stretched their lead when Tatum -- who later banked in a 3 from the top of the key and also hit a free throw on a bank shot -- made two shots behind the arc to close the half for a 28-20 lead.

It was the fewest points Virginia Tech scored in a half this season.

The Salukis then opened the second half with Tatum hitting another 3 to push the lead to 31-20. For much of the rest of the game, SIU was content to spread the floor, melt away time and put up a shot with a few seconds left on the shot clock - like a game of keepaway with scholarships.

Young's third 3 gave the Salukis a 44-31 edge at the midpoint of the second half. Against such an aggressive defense, and an offense intent on keeping the score down, the Hokies had no chance.

"It's very, very simple: you make shots, you win. You don't make shots, you don't win," said Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg, whose team was outscored by 30 points behind the arc. "We didn't make shots. We had good looks early in the game but we didn't make them."

The biggest cheer of the second half from SIU fans came when Tatum put up a shot with a second left on the shot clock -- and then got his own rebound. At many schools, those moments are ignored.

Tony Boyle started in place of the Salukis' third-leading scorer, Matt Shaw, who sprained an ankle at halftime of their 71-61 first-round win over Holy Cross. The Salukis didn't miss a beat.

Besides, it's not individuals but the way their team plays defense that sets Southern Illinois apart.

"Some of the toughest days I've had as a basketball player have been at practice going against my teammates," Tatum said. "I know how hard our defense is because I go against it every day."

Somebody else will find that out next week.

But I think they will win it IF they gey by UCLA.

Nola spelling ;} (77, 80)

I still say GT will mop the floor in their game and it might be Miami and maybe not.

Mechanical Engineering. I wondered if yours was Journalism. When I went back for my Master's it seemed that the best route for any trip across campus was through the new Journalism building, since students of that college were much easier on the eyes than those in the College of Engineering.

The two celebs I can remember crossing paths with during my time in Tally were both jaw dropping:

Gabby is even more beautiful in person. Saw her "making groceries" at Publix.

Ron Simmons (WWE's Farooq) is scary HUGE. Had a class with him.

Of course both sightings were a couple of decades ago.

hmmm, UF celebrity sightings that come to mind:

Dave Thomas's daughter Wendy (of hamburger fame).
Some chick that was in Playboy's Girls of the SEC.
And I'm disappointed that I never got over to Joe's Deli to have Emmitt Smith make a sandwich for me (as many of my classmates did).

You are right about that. You are either a football school or basketball school but no one has ever done both in the same year. Very cool.

My Hoyas played really rushed and deserved to lose. They will be back under Thompson.

By the way, when was the last time the same college won a major sports championship (football or basketball) one academic year, and won a championship in the other sport the next acad. year?

Have any colleges ever won football and basketball championships during the same acad. year?

I believe only 5 Division 1 Schools have a Natonal Championship in both Football and Basketball ... its a great trivia question. That number may have grown slightly throughout the years, but its amazingly low, so I would say its almost a lock that its never happened before.
