What does anyone think of the Bywater as a place to stay during Jazz Fest? It looks like a hike beyond Elysian Fields in the Marigny. The specific property is on Clouet Street near St. Claude, which yes, I know, is kind of touch and go in parts. It's apparently near some great place to eat called Elizabeth's. I do like exploring new neighborhoods, I guess I could cab it home late at night (hey, it's closer than the cab to Metairie). I know New Orleans fairly well, but not this area, but I have been curious about it. Opiinions?

Bywater ROCKS !! I would make sure you are river side of St. Claude and do cab it by night. You will be close to B.J.'s, Vaughn's, Mimi's, Bywater BBQ and the Quarter/ Frenchmen Street is just up-river. I love to grab a 24 ounce Icehouse, a go cup and stroll da Bywater/Marigny area.

Stayed in the Bywater with a friend my first 2-3 trips to New Orleans and loved it! Great neighborhood and people. It helped that we had a car at our disposal.
And Elizabeth's is fantastic!!!

Love the Bywater! We regularly look at real estate listings there and should the day come that we finally pull the trigger, its where we'll live!

The Bywater is high on our neighborhoods of choice for when we move to New Orleans.

Thanks everyone. I found availability for second weekend there, and with your great help, I'm seriously considering it, although I must say, it does seem kind of far.

Are you planning on walking to fest? I just did a google map direction search from the Saturn Bar at Clouet and St Claude to the Fairgrounds - it's about 3 miles each way.

No, I'd probably leisurely stroll to Esplanade and then take the municipal bus or a cab. I'm still thinking about it. I do walk a lot.

Yeah, that's better than those places that are 3 miles one way and 5 miles back. I hate those.

Funny you should mention that. One recommended route (St Claude to Esplanade) was 2.9 miles. The other route (along Franklin, Clairborne, Elysian Field, Miro, St. Bernard) was 4.0
You could get that extra mile in if you wanted to.

If I'm out drinking, it's always safest to take the same route back. I get distracted otherwise, and wind up whoknowswhere!

if your on the lake side of st. claude, numbers starting 1100 and up
you have to be real careful..

Well, you have me beat. I can't backtrack, drinking or not, walking or driving. It's led to some interesting scenery and some nearly-panicked times.

Great neighborhood to bike in. Rent a bike and ride back and forth to fest. You will be happy you did.

It sounds fabulous, but I found another rental (the place a friend of mine is staying at for 2nd half of first weekend and the Daze had a cancellation for
2nd weekend, so now I'm set in the Lower Garden District, which is another new area for me--I've always stayed in the FQ or CBD), but if anyone is interested, an incredible bargain (maybe as low as $75/night) can be found at the Bywater Bed and Breakfast, 1026 Clouet Street, near Elizabeth's, which I know a lot of you know. Maybe this info helps someone. I certainly appreciate the help I received. I think it could be a cool place, with a variety of rooms at various prices. It had availability a few days ago.
