Latest Disney `fairy tale' to be set in New Orleans
3/8/2007, 3:58 p.m. CST
The Associated Press NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Walt Disney Co. has started production on an animated musical fairy tale called "The Frog Princess," which will be set in New Orleans and feature the Walt Disney Studio's first black princess.
The company unveiled the plans Thursday at its annual shareholders' meeting in New Orleans.
John Lasseter, chief creative officer for Disney and the Disney-owned unit Pixar Animation Studios, said the movie would return to the classic hand-drawn animation process, instead of using computer animation that has become the industry standard. He called the film "an American fairy tale."
"The film's New Orleans setting and strong princess character give the film lots of excitement and texture," Walt Disney Studios chairman Dick Cook said.
The movie will be scored by Randy Newman, who also wrote the music for Disney's "Toy Story," "A Bug's Life," "Toy Story 2," "Monsters Inc." and "Cars."
Newman performed a song from the score for the shareholders.
John Musker and Ron Clements, who directed "The Little Mermaid," "Aladdin," and "Hercules" will direct the movie. The pair also wrote the story for the film.
Disney said its new animated princess — Maddy — will be added to its collection of animated princesses used at the company's theme parks and on consumer products.
The film is set for release in 2009.

PC: If they have the premiere here in New Orleans, be sure to take the chicklet to that!!! When they had the premiere for Hunchback here, we took the Rosebuds and they thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a big deal at the Superdome with stages and characters like only Disney can do!

Which of course makes me mention hebjamn's patry shirt last year. Because of the font for the name lettering, his handle looked very much like: Hebdamn

My princess is 18 now and it was worth every second I put in during training camp. I love how she turned out :) I wish every little girl was treated like a princess... there are so many who are treated just the opposite! :(

You're so right on both counts - my princess is 21 and so awsome. I'm a middle school teacher and get brokenhearted at how some kids are treated. Others are coddled too much. Balance, balance, balance.

.....and on the bright side the universe makes sure that some of 'em turn out really amazing despite being coddled or being mistreated. I work at a university and have seen some pretty amazing kids who have come from some pampered backgrounds and some - well - the hair on the back of your head would stand on end the rest of your life if you knew their stories. They volunteer, they mentor, they give back....and it's outrageously cool.

YYR, my little princess is now 23 and an amazing woman, wife and college grad, soon to be teacher, and mama of our next generation's princesses, ages 5 and 5 1/2. She's had some coddling and some very hard times to balance it all out.

The resiliency of some kids always amazes me....my current position has me supervising a team of workers who work with wards of the state....when I see these kids moving on to college and doing okay despite their horrific pasts, it gives me hope for the future...it IS outrageously cool ONj!

The cynic in me: The Disney-fication of New Orleans isn't just a clichéd rumor anymore.
The optimist in me: If this helps civic pride, individual esteem, I hope it is a success.

I don't think Disney is known for breaking down stereotypes. Remember Pocahantas?

So, poor black girl from Lower 9th meets rich white guy from Garden District. Their home floods but they escape to Salt Lake City with the help of a talking gator and they all live happily ever after. Then, they do the same thing on ice.

Utah is the Number One per capita consumer of Jello and thus their legislature officially named it the state snack of the state . . . apparently their legislature has some time on its hands . . .
