Caught Papa Mali opening for Galactic on latest run here in nashville few weeks ago. i like papa mali and love his new stuff with kirk joseph but it was a little bit of a strange marriage between the swampy southern rock and galactic. i liked it but...different when the played together.

Hey frang, Derek Trucks & Doyle Bramall Jr are both out on tour with Clapton. We caught the second stop of the tour here in Houston. Lots of people were talking about the blond kid. Someone in the bathroom said they need to rename him Duane Allman. I told him he has been with the Allmans for a few years. Derek must be 26/27 but with that baby face he looks much younger. Clapton share the spotlight with Trucks/Bramall but it was Trucks who smoked! Lots of solos by both. Robert Cray opened and came back to close the show w/Clapton. Derek plays one mean slide. For a large venue, one of the best shows for myself in a long time. Im not to crazy about 18,000 plus seat venues. Looking forward to seeing Derek 2nd Sat out at the Fair Grounds.

Caught JJ Cale & Clapton together at the Guitar Festival in Dallas (2005). Yes, they played Cocaine. Clapton was relaxed that day and having fun. On the DVD of the two day festival during the JJ/Clapton set you can see me up front near the stage. Friday a week ago during the Clapton show I remember thinking I was going to check for tickets to the next evening show in San Antonio. Only a short 4 hour drive from my house. Did not make that show but for anyone who wants to catch a great show, go see the current Clapton tour.

I'm so excited for Prince! Pretty funny, when Jon ordered the tix (by phone) they basically told him "dress to impress". They are pretty specific about what you are NOT allowed to wear. Normally i'm a jeans and t-shirt or tank top girl at shows so i'm going to have to figure something out.

I caught that Blues Harp Blowout last night in Cambridge. Hummel, Musselwhite, Wilson, with Hummel's band. For the final number, guitarist Rusty Zinn handed off his guitar to Ronnie Earl who was in the audience. Jerry Portnoy and one other harp legend (whose name escapes me) joined in too.
Great show. I don't think I have ever seen a solo of any kind, from anyone, performed with as much energy as Wilson's.

Tex,
Yep, Wilson as in Kim. He didn't sing much, but played a loud and mean very electrified harp, doing high and low octaves in an overlapping fashion.
Rusty Zinn had a soft, jazzy, rhythm-oriented style. Ronnie Earle had a bit more of an edge and was flashier.
Fred (Texas JF Fanatic)
03-14-2007, 03:42 PM
Thanks for the review. Seen Ronnie before but Rusty Zinn is still on my list to see. Sounds like you enjoy the Harp.

Tex, funny you should mention that I enjoy the harp. Actually, next to the B3, it's my least favorite instrument.
But I wound up at that show because I brought my father for his 77th birthday present. He's been a blues-a-holic his whole life. He played a few gin joints in his teen years (piano) and continues to tear up the keys even today (in his house by himself). He loves Pinetop, Johnnie Johnson, Jay McShann, Katie Webster, and then way back dudes Lux-Lewis, Ammons, etc.
One time he recently told me in his very strong Boston accent, "I love all blues, but I really love the hahhhp. You need a good hahhhp to round out the band." So there you have it!

Wrong again, which happens about 95% of the time. Sounds like Kim Wilson was smokin last night. So, who was the other Harp Player. Maybe: James Cotton, Carey Bell or maybe Billy Branch? You need to bring your Dad down for JF. He might enjoy on Harp from New Orleans J Monque' D.

Saw him last night in San Jose, and he and his band damn near burnt down the house with blistering rock and roll. It's nearly impossible to rock a Silicon Valley crowd, but Clapton had 'em up and howling for nearly the entire show. I've seen EC many times over the years, but I think this is the best band he's ever toured with. The bass player is a monster of funk; the two keyboard players give you straight on blues and boogie woogie and Cream megahits with equal dexterity. The piano guy rocked a big arena all by his lonesome on a couple of solos. The star of the band is Derek Trucks, son of Butch Trucks of the Allmans, and an absolute beast on slide guitar. It's clear that he challenges and stretches Clapton and that EC enjoys it. The old man still has all his chops and the two of them were on fire all night. (In contrast to the Cream tour, where I thiought EC was going through the motions) They went deep into the songbook with extended versions of Key to the Highway, Little Wing, White Room, Further On Up the Road, Layla, Cocaine, and Crossroads (with Robert Cray), and a bunch of others, but the night was really about two monster guitarists at the top of their games. To those who still have the chance, see the show. He is still God.

Last night was my first time seeing Ruthie Foster, at the Narrows center for the Arts in Fall River, MA -but hopefully won't be the last. She is small in stature but not in voice or stage presence, very strong vocals and songwriting, and funny too, told some good stories. She does folk, blues, gospel, even a little reggae, and can really belt it out. plus having Pat Boyack along with her on electric guitar rounded out the sound with some really nice bluesy solos. He still makes all those faces too so is fun to watch on stage, he really gets into it.
On Thursday night, we went to see Elton John, my first time seeing him live, and he did not disappoint! He played around 2 1/2 hours, and performed lots of older, not so well known material that they don't do very often (B-sides, says Joe) plus of course plenty of more familiar stuff (Honky Cat, , and at least one new song, "the bridge" or something. The Providence concert was in preparation for this big 60th birthday extravaganza happening tonight at MSG in NY (to be shown live on MSN) so he started off with "60 years on", and ended with "Your Song". he may not hit all the high notes like he used to (like on Rocket man) , but is still quite a performer, one of those artists with so much material, it could have gone on for 4-5 hours easily. And the light show was really spectacular, from our seats we could watch the lighting director who seemed to be having a blast "directing" the stage show.
Wednesday we went to the "Last of the Breed" show with Willie Nelson/ Merle Haggard/ Asleep at the Wheel and Ray Price. Asleep at the Wheel was the backup band, and Ray Price opened . He was a little too mellow for my tastes, like being on the grand ole opry - though at 81 the guy still sounds really good! Then after an intermission, Asleep at the Wheel did a few songs, then Merle joined the band, then Willie (and he had his harmonica player with him to give him the right sound on certain songs.....) Merle was cool and Willie was great, and they all shared some verses of the songs. I just love Willie Nelson. but I wish Ray Benson & the boys had been able to play more, though I'm not used to seeing them in such a large venue where you can't really dance too much (10,000 seat arena at Mohegan Sun)
Last Saturday was the great "Blues Harp Blowout" with Mark Hummel, Kim Wilson, Charlie Musselwhite. Each did a set, backed by a band with guitar, bass, drums, keyboard..., and then everyone came out for one big wailing jam, joined by Magic Dick from J Geils and also Doug James, sax player who has played with roomful of blues, Duke Robillard, etc as well as his own band. That was a smokin show and a night at the Narrows not soon to be forgotten.
So today I'm taking a rest and hoping to catch Galactic w/ Papa Mali this Tuesday, Duke Robillard on Friday and Elana James & the Continental 2 on Saturday. We'll see how the week goes!

La Ti Da -
I caught that Blues Harp Blowout last night in Cambridge.
Hi jaypee, just saw your post. Sounds like all these shows were slightly different - really was great, wasn't it? Kim Wilson went out into the audience during one of his solo's, without the mic

Hi La - we went to see Elton John when he was in Nor Cal last Fall and loved it. It was my first time seeing him live as well. Elton put on such a great show...very high energy considering it was in a large arena type venue in San Jose, CA. Fun stuff!

Last night went to see Jason Crosby Band at Ace of Clubs in NYC - a fairly small basement club. When we walked in we noticed a pedal steel on stage against the wall. Sure enough Robert Randolph played most of the 2nd set; joined at times by Marcus on drums and then Oteil Burbridge on bass. When we turned around after it was over, there was Derek Trucks just mingling with everyone. What an absolutely great way to start the week.

It was good. They played a Sunday night on their way out of Austin (SxSW). On account of the night, the other stuff going on, whatever, but there were maybe 100-150 folks in a room with a fire code of about 900. But the folks who were there were diehard fans, singing along, etc, and JJ picked up on that and appreciated it.
They've added a horn section, which gives them a bit more polished sound, but they can still get down and greasy.
They do tour a lot, so while I do recommend the show when they come thru your town, unless you're a NOLA local, I can't pick their Fest set over Zachary Richard (who rarely tours outside Louisiana & Quebec) or the Ed Bradley parade (unique experience).

This past Sunday in Sarasota they held the 12th annual "Giving Hunger the Blues",.. an annual fundraiser for the local foodbank that features two stages.. the weather was perfection,... plenty of decent food and beer choices (went with Grolsch drafts)...
Got there around 4 p.m., 4 hours after the start,.. and settled right into a very decent set put on by a local all star band consisting of 13 peeps,.. five very impressive gui-tar dudes, a bass player, a five piece horn section (again,.. very impressive), a talented drum dude,.. and a sub-par female vocalist.... the rest of the band smoked,... and luckily many of the vocals were also handled by three of the lead gui-tar dudes... anywho,.. after that set I wandered to the back stage and caught an hour of five very funky and talented very young dudes,.. again all local talent from nearby Booker High School,.. which has a very well recognized program for the arts.... The two leads were two young fun lovin' hippie dudes with tons of talent on all manner of wind instruments,.. sax, trombone, clarinet, harmonica.... they gots themselves a future...
After they finished up a very cool set,.. was gettin' ready to head home when I headed back towards the front stage... Heard Brian Johnsons unmistakable voice (has made Sarasota his home for the last decade and always can be caught sitting in with local bands who put out some AC/DC stuff for him)... As I got closer,.. something was obviously different.... lo and behold,... unannounced and unexpected,.. the entire band was in town,.. and they rocked for the next two hours straight...
Two very cool things,... they invited a ton of local youngsters on stage for three tunes,.. and they all had a blast playin' air guitar as Angus Young was torching the stage.... 2nd great thing,.. there was no barrier whatsoever at the front of the stage.... i was literally inches from them.. took tons of photos with my phone,.. many came out pretty good.. so close they were bumpin' my arm while I was trying to take a few "close ups"... My ears are still ringin'....
Always knew their music,.. but until two days ago never much of a fan... but they were havin' a frickin' ball,.. as was the small crowd.... Couldn't believe how many tunes they played that were previously drilled into my memory banks.... For the four hundred or so people on hand,.. it was huge ass smiles and dancin' all around.....
jus' like the laid back peeps of Toronto ;).....

Gonna be checking this kick ass lineup out this afternoon. James Montgomery sat in for a few songs with Cowboy Mouth wednesday night, and dam if the whole entourage wasn't at the knotty pine eating dinner last night when we got there to eat....oh and the knotty just happened to be setting up for Open Mic night. The all star jam got up and took over the stage for 3 songs including jailhouse rock. Without question the best open mic i've seen ;) !!!
The All-Stars band consists of guitarists Jeff “Skunk” Baxter of Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers and Barry Goodreau of Boston, drummers Kenny Aronoff of John Mellencamp and Smashing Pumpkins and Kevin Miller of Fuel and Fosterchild, bassists Fran Sheehan of Boston and Chris Chaney of Jane’s Addiction, and blues harmonica player James Montgomery.
“The band was put together for this show only,” said band manager Bill Johnston. “We’re all friends looking for an excuse to hangout in Jackson Hole.”
Let’s look a little deeper into this band of all-stars … Since founding Steely Dan in the early ’70s, Baxter’s four-decade career has garnered him twelve gold albums, eight platinum albums and two Grammy Awards.
Yeah, and he has also composed music for movies and television, including the original theme for “Beverly Hills 90210” and “King of the Hill.”
Guitarist Goodreau was a founding member of Boston. Their first album went on to sell 17 million copies. Sheehan played with Boston from 1975-1983 and has since played in numerous all-star bands for charity events.
Smacking the drum kit is Kenny Aronoff, one of the most in-demand drummers in the world. He was named the #1 Pop/Rock Drummer and the #1 Studio Drummer for five consecutive years by the readers of Modern Drummer Magazine. And get this – he’s played on over thirty Grammy-nominated recordings.

Hey Now I saw the Cowboy Mouth show here in Salt Lake last night, and was really impressed with what a high energy vibe that the new lineup brought to the table. I had not seen CM for a couple of years, but Fred has always been one of New Orleans' best showmen, and was as enthusiastic as ever. If they are coming your way, make sure to go support them, you will be glad you did!!! PS Hey Jeff, gotta love the Knotty Pine, a killer little roadhouse that is always a good time.....

My brother and i keep having impeccable timing on going there when great music is there without any kind of promotion.
Cowboy Mouth sounded great the other night. Vance is really into the flow now and fred was having a great time. Mary was playing bass for them which i thought was interesting. Where was sonia? Was it mary or sonia in SLC?

Sonia is doing some solo stuff but she's still officially with the band. I think she will be with them for their solo shows but I don't know. I'm certain this is answered on the Cowboy Mouth board if you go over there!

Yeah, I'm going to miss it...I'm still at work and need to go home and get cleaned up first. Some friends and I are supposed to go pick up Art Edmaiston (sax player from The Gamble Brothers Band) to have dinner before the show. He is touring with Mofro. Hope some of the other guys join us. That would be fun :)

Last night we met most of MOFRO for dinner and drinks then we went to
the venue for the show. F*CKIN ROCKED!
Got on the guest list. Nice...since it was a sold out show.
After the show we went on the tour bus and partied. The bus is huge.
Sleeps 12. I left them around 3am and cabbed it home. They were all
going to another bar for chocolate martinis. I left my friend, Eli, in their
hands....hope she didn't wind up in Alabama or something. She was
wanting to curl up in one of the band memebers bunks when I left.
JJ Grey was very nice and polite. Offered us beers on the bus.
It was good to see Art Edmaiston too. He's the sax player from The Gamble Brothers Band and is touring with Mofro right now. He's such a sweetie.
Good nite for Eli and I. :)

I just have too much going on to finish up before fest, business wise. I also am boycotting Bogarts, but I'd make an exception for these guys if I had the time.

Yes, well, I can see that timewise, Ohio. I've got a week more than you before my ETA in New Orleans. Then, Chicago, back home, and then Jazz Fest. Lotsa stuff between now & JF for me.
Haven't been to Bogart's since NOV '04, when Steve Earle & Allison Moorer performed.

This is a band I adore. Been following them for years now. The Chieftains had them open up for them years ago at Wolf Trap here in Virginia and it has been a love affair for me ever since. They play so...many instruments but this song is timely for me..
Great Big Sea is from Newfoundland. Going to see them tomorrow night in DC, last show for us before fest! I need this band for my heart. Hope you enjoy them.
