I find it sort of disturbing, that with several local, very talented web design agencies, typically made up of just a few people trying to make a living here, that JazzFest has outsourced the construction of their website to California. I personally know 2 web design studios here that would have done a better job than this site. Shops that have won national awards and are doing great work in the city. That's a little sad that not only does JazzFest really not have any Jazz per se, but it also doesn't even use local talent to spread the word. This site isn't even very good.

I know, with all the local jazz talent, how can they not schedule people like Ellis Marsalis, Troy Andrews, Kermit Ruffins, Donald Harrison, Nicholas Payton, PHJB, James Carter, Pharaoh Sanders, Terence Blanchard, Pete FountainIrvin Mayfield, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Franz Jackson, Dr. Micheal White, Branford Marsalis? You'd think some of them would be playing there.

....what gets me about the website is that the icon of the second liners at the top tries to give the impression that the trumpet player is "actually" playing the trumpet, and the icon also tries to fool people into thinking that the wind is blowing through the top header of the site....see the streamers off the top of the umbrella, their pants legs, and the notes flying east to west?????
...now surely some of you realize that the the guy/gal in the icon is NOT playing the trumpet, and you like i sure don't feel any breeze coming through your monitor....
..i mean come on, do they honestly think i don't know ANY names of jazz legends nor i don't know jazz when i hear it????
....and to think they call this the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival...

i'm thinking we should rename him Hairy "Bass" Tage....
...and what about this Johnny Vidacovich character? i saw him last year for the first time and he was with this band called "Astral Project". Do they think they are actually going to be contracted through Haliburton to develop a star wars missile defense program?
i mean this vidacovich character also played with professor longhair (who by the way did not have a ph.d)......and he claims to have backbeat skills???

Does Dr. John have a PhD? If I were Dr. Micheal White or Dr. Lonnie Smith, I'd smack him around, but (sigh) they won't be there to do so because, as we all know, there are no jazz artists at JazzFest. .

I think the original poster has a valid point. I don't know if they made an effort to contract with local web designers. If they didn't, they should have pursued that possibility. I am always reading on this board of people coming down because they want to support the local folks and aid them in whatever way in their effort to rebuild. The foundation should be doing the same. And perhaps they did make an effort.

Could anyone, anywhere claim 100% local commodies and talent? In a world economy, as today...nothing is 100% local. Yeah, there's folks in NOLA who could do a damn fine job on this website...but i'm not coming to NOLA to see the website (sorry website...i'll buy u a dink later, after you rub Corona's feet)...i coming to hear music distilled from many many places, in a locale that is known as the greatest bohemian enclave in the US. You and Lenny should contact promoters and let them know that you would like to see more local non-music talent involved in the process.

Well, it's legitimate only if there was no legitimate reason for NOJHF to farm the website creation and maintenance out of state . . . there may well be a very good reason that they didn't use a local shop.
I'm in IT and I can say that almost always the preference is to use local web designers and maintenance, as then you can be in the same time zone, meet in person, etc. My guess is that for whatever unknown-to-us reason that wasn't possible, or practical in this case.
Without us knowing that, it's just a lot of baseless assumptions and griping. Or you can just refuse to use the site in protest, but again without knowing the behind the scenes reality - that could be without merit.
Maybe CJ or FestyDave are able to shed some light on this and then we might have some ground to stand on and let our feelings that local webfolks be used known to the NOJHF.
I, too, am a fervent believer in using local folks, but sometimes it's just not to be . . . :o

start clamoring for next years business & contractual setups w/ promoters. Try to influence them for future contracts...this year is probably like a runaway freight train...stuff has already been decided. also, i would lose the "dissing" of the current site..just state the facts...We want to see local talent used in the production of this festival. These are the local talents we'd like to endorse...
I'm sorry, i dint intend that you and Lenny are writing a letter together...or even know each other...

hey now, the comment about the world economy is correct....i just love those that also say buy fruit and veggies from the produce department from the local grocery because it's local, which is entirely incorrect....(ya gotta love "fresh" produce from 1,000 miles away)...
ok, here is the deal...."lenny" commented about using local web developers, which is a point, but did you also not read that he said that there were no jazz musicians at the fest? to me this bozo/moron was trying to hijack a thread on this board/bored for his selfish means to an end for business....
it is a bit shallow to give us hell for giving this original post-er hell....and not knowing the behind the scenes even...
..ok, i think i deserve like a brass pass or something? why? because i'm good enough, i'm smart enough, and dog gone it, people (maybe 1 or 2) like me...

What exactly isn't very good about it? It tells the mission of the foundation, has a link for music, added a snazzy little jukebox recently, gives the breakdown on the schedule and gives links for ticket and travel info, and a few various and sundry other things and has a chat bored where fans of JF can come and chat (albeit a little off topic sometimes :p )
Maybe, just maybe, since they are a non-profit somebody outbid the locals to do the site.
Muchkmusic who merchandises the JF live recordings are not local yet they allow musicians to retain the majority of the profits and rights-very good for Louisiana musicians who got taken deep by Tower when it folded-should we use locals just because they are locals...I am not so sure (although LA music merchandisers may do the same as Munchkmusic)
Just some food for thought on why it may not have been done.

This thread brightened an otherwise gawd please let this day be over kind of Friday. Laughing out loud is so very good for the hawt and soul. If Lenny had just said why does the fest hire an out of town firm for the site, this probably would've gone in a totally different direction. But he added there's no jazz. Lenny might be smiling right now if he trolled by and pulled us all in. And I am too because it's been a fun ride. Now yall give website a break. So what's with this Libby deal? Why did Bush try to buy cowpeas from Niger?
Which begs the question, are cowpeas really peas or really, in fact, beans?
And aren't they called chick peas. Or Crowder peas? What's the deal???
And if you put them in a blender, you get "humus". Hmmm.
2 cups cooked crowder peas
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 tablespoon cajun mustard
1/2 tablespoon Wooster
1 tablespoon EVOO
1/4 cup fresh basil
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 meduim jalapeenee diced and seeded
1 teaspoon red pepper sauce
Put ll into a blender and blend into oblivion. Serve with high quality crackers,

Us? We're a bunch of music loving freaks who work entirely too hard, and are lookin forward to vacationing in NOLA and bringin our hard earned cash.
MxJoey - as a local, WE LOVE YOU GUYS, come down here and spend the money and spread all of those good vibes....that's what NOLa needs to come back and rebuild
and, re: hijacking this thread, well yes, i agree, it would be nice for the foundation to find a local website designer/host etc - but, point taken, a litte fun is always good....:)

The website has always been managed by and maintained by the Festival right here in NOLA. I have worked on it since it's launch. That would make me a local web designer. We've always been open to working with local and non local designers to help develop some of the content.

Hope you know we appreciate all your hard work Festy. Cause we do!
....what gets me about the website is that the icon of the second liners at the top tries to give the impression that the trumpet player is "actually" playing the trumpet, and the icon also tries to fool people into thinking that the wind is blowing through the top header of the site....see the streamers off the top of the umbrella, their pants legs, and the notes flying east to west?????
...now surely some of you realize that the the guy/gal in the icon is NOT playing the trumpet, and you like i sure don't feel any breeze coming through your monitor....
..i mean come on, do they honestly think i don't know ANY names of jazz legends nor i don't know jazz when i hear it????
....and to think they call this the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival...Heritage, what heritage. It's not like they have any local food, crafts, dancing, or music, like ummmmm....jazz. :D

right so the original poster had a valid point. it would be awesome if to help the NOLA economy, local web designers would have been hired. but no one knows why they weren't. maybe there was a good reason. of course said "poster" made some inexcusable mistakes: i.e. jazz fest doesn't have any real jazz acts?

So, sailimg, do you sail barehand? A good mate is a good hand on any boat I sail. What happens when we capsize and have to work our way out of the wetness? Teamwork and a firm grip on the stays and sheets.
I did not just say that. Ignore me.
