hey all....

this is an fyi for those that don't know......

as you already know john mayer first came on the seen a little commercial and very soulful.....

if you are wondering whether to catch him, then take a listen to his live Try! CD. That's not his latest CD but an introduction to a different john mayer than you might know (especially if you know him by his earlier stuff)....

also, when that live cd came out he did a special, which i caught as a freeview on directv.....needless to say my mouth was on the floor after i saw him roll through a funkified rendition of Cissy Strut.....

...he also made some appearances last fest during some night time shows.....soooooo, if you are wonderin' about this guy, you might want to check him out.....an amazing young talent, nice lookin' for the ladies (except once his face changes during the guitar solos), and he can fulfill all prescriptions for soulful funk and virtuosity...

...and no, i'm not on his marketing team...

When he first hit the national scene, I was a bit suspicious...but I think now he's the real deal.

I like him alot. Was very stoked to see him as an addition to my weekend. I have some friends who can't stand him. Just say his name and they wretch. I don't get that, though. I think he's talented and his songs are soulful and thought provoking. Love his lyrics. Not sure what there is not to like, but to each his own.!

1) dating Jessica Simpson
2) and he repeatedly bashes one of my favorite bands in interviews and that bugs me. There's no need for that in music. Do what you do and forget the rest!

But do you like his music????

I like his playing, not a fan of his singing. Sounds like he has marbles in his mouth.

But enough of being critical, I'm glad he's on board this year for the people that want to see him (and I hope he pulls some fans from the ABB stage if they are playing at the same time!)

TGIF!

It's all good. I like to hear different opinions. I've learned alot from folks on this board who know so much more than me about music. And I definately hear ya' on that crowd control thing!

Just curious; who does he bash?

Phish (but I realize they are not popular around here as well). I just do not understand why any musician would feel the need to talk about another band in a negative light but anyway back to John Mayer!

I feel John Mayer owes me a refund for a Buddy Guy show at Legends I went to in January. Mayer sat in with Guy and it was like taking your favorite beer and mixing it 50/50 with water. I had seen Guy the year before and he was amazing. This show, he deferred to Mayer (when he wasn't trying to convince us of Mayer's talent) and it was just bland. I much prefered Buddy's regular backing guitarist. Don't get me wrong. I don't dislike John Mayer's own material. It is pleasent enough, but far from memorable. But, Buddy won't be around with us much longer and I don't need to hear the latest band featured on The OC during one of the few chances I get to see him.

For those of you interested, Rolling Stone's cover story last week was on today's "guitar gods". John Mayer, DerekTrucks, and John F. from the Chili Peppers were featured on the cover. It'll be good to be able to compare two of these young guns @ da Fest....

I "bumped into" John Mayers music by accident only recently and me and Mrs Dicky love the two albums we have i.e. Continuum and Heavier Things. Looking forward to seeing a live set.

Who says Phish is popular here? He has no right to bash Phish. They have done so much more then he has. Fan or not, they have contributed a lot to the music world. I guess when you date Jessica Simpson you can get a little full of yourself.

I have been following John Mayer since he was a newbie guitar palyer and he has matured immensly as a guitarist. When he's not pushing the "pop" music the boy rips on guitar. His Try! CD is awesome. Steve Jordan and Pino Pallidino bring out the real JM not the record company bubble gum boy ( just my opinion :o )
The other thing I like about him is is dry, sarcastic wit.
So I hope he puts on a great show for all who are leary of him.
Check out "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room" on his new CD.

No doubt John Mayer can play, I just have to laugh when he drops a name like Buddy Guy or B.B King and he thinks he knows all about the blues. He comes off like he has discovered some obscure genre and he is too cool for anyone because of it. I guess for most of the generation that is a fan of his will buy it. Anyone who is a blues fan who has listened to an interview with him will know what Im talking about. At any rate when he shuts up and plays I'll be listening. Unless he is opposite ABB.

Well I'm as of now neither crazy bout nor dislikin his music, bit I think many threadheads might appreciate the lyrics (excerpt below) -- one of his new songs:

.....
............
Now if we had the power
To bring our neighbors home from war
They would have never missed a Christmas
No more ribbons on their door
When you trust your television
What you get is what you got
‘Cuz’ when they own the information ooohhh,
They can bend it all they want

So while we're waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
We keep on waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
It's not that we don't care
We just know that the fight ain't fair
So we keep waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change

yyr, Glinda. His music is filled with this sort of thing. My personal favorite is from the previous cd, from the song "The Wheel"... It ends with:

I believe, that my life's gonna' see
the love I give returned to me

Love that!

Well, BUMMER! I thought my one escape from FOMS was I didn't have worry about who was playing against John Mayer, 'cause no way was I going to see Mayer. After reading this thread, though, I'm curious enough to want to see his set. Now what'm I gonna do?

For What its worth:

Admittedly, Im not the biggest fan of him, but there is a DVD called 'Herbie Hancock - Possibilities', In which Herbie uses a different artist on every track, and then kind of lets that person run the show. John Mayer is one of the people he plays with, and its a pretty hot track

ya got at least one other Phish Phan here ... I dont think people have a problem with the band Phish, as much as they do many of their fans. Seems like when any "Younger" Hippie set develops, the old one gets elitist ... for example, had Phish just been added to the lineup, you would be hearing some major whining about the expected crowds at the fairground

He does play a decent guitar. I'll give him that. But, it really seemed he was playing it and not feeling it. It all seemed to come down to technique, not feel. But, coupled with a great rhythm section like Pino Pallidino and Steve Jordan, his instrumental stuff sounds good. Just please, keep the singing to the pop stuff.

Sounds very accurate!

I think I would like Mayer more if he didn't date Simpson. I also realize that's no reason to not like someone's music. I just can't help it.

Heavy Things - Phish
Heavier Things- Mayer

With a name like Funkbass, you have to love Mike G!

if you don't like it, don't listen. People who whimper about 'spreadheads' or 'phish phreaks' or the ludacris element messing up their 'fess or bringing the wrong element to the fairgrounds, are let's say, less than enlightened.

I can zig zag through ghostland with the best of 'em but have no time for the haters (if there are any on this bored).

wasn't directed at you mcg or really anyone particularly but i've heard the drumbeat on the board before about the right/wrong crowds being attracted by the right/wrong acts. i.e. slick rick last year or wsp on several occasions.

wow, all i can say is when i look on the national scene for someone that can straddle mainstream and the mo' hipper side, that is his age, i don't see much of anything....

he is an interesting talent that has many different sides....

mo' power to those that can serve both judge and jury...

...for me, i'll just dance to his music while i watch the other peeps shakin' they booties....

Definitely like but don't love his pop stuff - but Try! is an amazing album. He plays a shockingly similar style to Stevie Ray. Not saying he's that good, but the man can play!

I really hope he's not opposite ABB because if there were some crossover jams with him and Derek Trucks it would be amazing...

Here is another vote for John Mayer. Like I said on another thread, the last time I saw him was in Dallas at the Cotton Bowl jamming with BB King, Eric Clapton, & Jimmie Vaughan. The kid can play. He has come a long ways from singing songs about High School.
