Can we just design our own cubes? As long as they play in the order I like, you can keep your beverage. I'll even buy you one! ;)

a virtual fest, where everyone gets their own perfect festival?
as long as all the old & new friends can be with me. and i want perfect weather too. sunny with a few clouds to block the sun occasionally. and that soft cool breeze we have gotten on rare occasions at fest. and of course, no line for beer, food, or potties.
lets buy each other beverages - often.

Sheesh, I started trying to put together some edumacated guesses, and once I started I realized this was gonna be a 5 hour project!!!!! Too mind blowing for me - I'll just wait 3 weeks for the cube profesionals to do their work, and in the meantime continue with my Fest training of sleep, scotch, and soft shell crab po-boys....mmmmmm ;)

Just got back from a bar called the Standard in Downtown LA. Man, that place was full of stuck-up, uptight twits. Our group was 3 gals, and 6 guys. The stupid hostess didn't let us in because of the ratio of gals to guys. She was like: You guys have 3 girls and 6 guys? Ok, you have to wait. In the end, it took us about 1 1/2 hours to get in - we waited cause it was a friend's bday.
The vibe I get about NO, just from reading these boards is making me hate that LA snobby, superficial attitude!
Plus, drinks are like $12 for a cocktail!

Just one more week to wait, correct? I'm seeing cubes in my sleep.
I had a dream where I dropped by the Festival office to meet with someone in the marketing department and was given an advance copy of the cubes. I was asked to keep it quiet, but of course, I spilled it on the bored. The repercussions were serious; I was banned from the Fairgrounds.

LMAO BigDag....I know, a week after waiting this long seems like a sprint but it still is killing me. I definitely know that I would spill on the boreds if I knew. I would just create a psuedo-bored name to avoid being banned :p and of course go to fest in disguise hehehe

Well, Lester, you do have options. You can see partial sets if you can tear yourself away from wherever you are. You can rank your mustsees and approach it from that angle. I do think that the more years you attend the jazzfest, the fewer must sees you have. So it won't always be this difficult. And always remember and never forget: Judge your jazzfest not by the greatness of what you see but by what you had to skip in order to see it.

It's funny you should mention Monsieur Crumb - I was thinking of him too, with CJ's little crumb leavings (what is he, Hansel??). I had been aware of his work since I was young and found out about Fritz the Cat and Mr. Natural, but didn't know much about him until seeing the documentary (which is great, but his family makes mine look sane and staid - which is saying something) . . .

several of us supplemented with Wx3, and piled in Jack's VW bug and off we went. don't remember much except it was vulgar & hilarious. it was rated X but most of us were under 16. maybe someone knew someone at the theater, or maybe they just didnt care how old we were. it was CA.

You know what - we're all so obsessed with the cubes maybe they should be more new orleans like....hmmm.....what do y'all think of this idea...
Maybe each cube day should feature artwork at the top from a local artist - or upcoming young artist (yes, better idea).....(this is stream of consciousness - so my apologies).
Something akin to the wine bottles/labels from the french in the 1950s and 1960s....
where we have the black band at the top of the cube and the day - there could be an artwork border or something - maybe from a local school or just a neat young artist who shows promise etc.....
it would be a fantastic way for this young talent to get some press - and how fun to dress up the cubes ?!?!?

Hey, ya'll. I don't know if this qualifies as a "Cubes Question" and I apologize in advance if this is on the wrong thread, but, I've been on the bored for 2 days now trying to figure out who's playing at the Jackson Square show the Thursday before 2nd weekend. I saw it mentioned here, somewhere, but can't find it now. Also, what time of day will that show start? Thanks!!

I think you are talking about Fan Fest at Lafayette Square on the Thursday of Daze Between? It's a park just a few blocks from the quarter. It was mentioned about a month ago, but no new info since then. I'm really curious also about the details! I haven't been able to find anything via google, and I can't remember who is putting the show on so that I could check their website.
Anybody have any info?

the new orleans jazz and heritage festival foundation is putting on the show. I imagine Scott Aiges is in charge.

Thanks KK. I just went to their website. They invite memberships and call those who buy them "Fans of the fest". Membership includes "Invitation to Annual Fans Membership Celebration". Don't know if that's the same thing or not. If so, it sounds like you'd have to join (minimum $35) to get in.
But that's just conjecture. Looking forward to hearing more eventually.

Scott Aiges is in charge. My understanding is that it will be open to everyone; lineup should be out in 7-10 days, or so.

The moment that the cubes come out I start jumping up and down with joy - I have to remember to wear flat shoes on Tuesday - last year I nearly broke my ankle! :D I am starting my mental packing list now...

I'm so looking forward to the cubes, but they won't do me as much good as they will you fest vets. I know which BNA's I want to see and some of the locals (Dr. John ect.). Let me tell you a little about my taste in music and see if any of you would be willing to help me out. I like all kinds of music (not a real big fan of country), but mainly blues rock (ABB (sadly I will miss them) Johnny Winter, Eric Clapton, ect.), gospel (toe tapping, hand clapping, lively praise the Lord kind of music), NO funk & classic rock. I may need to appoligize now for the blues rock. There was one thread on here that didn't speak too kindly of that type music, but I really get into it (can't help it).
Also, (don't start throwing thing at me) I really like some of Rod's music, especially the older stuff.
I'm only there for the first weekend. If anyone would be willing to make some suggestions for me, I'd appreciate it much!

There's no need to apologize for anything. Many of us discovered the Fest by coming to see the BNA's, then falling in love with many of the other offerings. You'll be able to get your gospel fix at the Gospel Tent, no matter what days you are there. And if I were to make a list of "must sees" of the local acts for the first weekend, I surely would include Kermit Ruffins, Trombone Shorty, the subdudes, George Porter, Bonerama, Eddie Bo, Rebirth, Sonny Landreth, Henry Butler, Jon Cleary, Charmaine Neville, Mem Shannon, The New Orleans Social Club, Theresa Andersson, Bobby Lounge, and Irma Thomas. That's just for starters.

bluesmama, let me help guide you also. Ditto on everything BigDag said. He is guiding you in the right direction. Im a huge fan of ABB, J/Winter & Clapton also. Sorry your going to miss ABB. If you only listen to one thing I list then this is it. Run, don't walk to see Sonny Landreth on slide. He closes the Blues Tent 1st Sat. But you need to catch him up close in a small venue. It sounds like your doing 1st weekend, if wrong then please let us know. Some other great Blues: Lucky Peterson (Chicago), Bryan Lee (Blind Guitar slinger from New Orleans), Tab Benoit (Houma LA), John Mooney (Sometime NO but living in FL now). fyi Buddy Guy plays HOB 1st Friday.

Have to agree either RocknBowl or HOB are both good - my preference is the RocknBowl, but if you are staying in the Quarter, you can walk to HOB - RocknBowl is definitely a taxi
