I have it from a very reliable authority that Papa Mali and Bill Kreutzmann will be opening for Govt' Mule at the new Mahalia Jackson Theater during Jazzfest.
Their band is called either "Seven Walkers" or "Seven Waters" and plays Dead standards, NOLA classics and some new tunes written by Papa Mali and Robert Hunter.
If things gel, they expect to play more festivals this summer.

Looking forward to seeing them at Wakarusa and it's seven walkers. :D

Thanks for the correction!
Actually, I couldn't decide wether Seven Waters or Seven Walkers was a more provocative name. :D
My favorite "mis-hear" is still from my wife, though: "Very Crusty Mercy" instead of "Ferry Cross The Mersey."

There's so many good bands playing on April 30th is just disgusting.

A buddy just emailed me and said George Porter Jr would be playing with 7 Walkers now. He said it was just announced on his facebook page. I think that news is new.
Anyway, I like it regardless.

The only thing that concerns me about this show is the start time: 7:45. If I didn't care about seeing the opener for Mule, it wouldn't be an issue, but I think the 7 Walkers show is going to be just as good. Now, I'm sure they won't start exactly at 7:45, but I'm going to have to leave Derek and Susan at fest early if I want to get a shower....

I was headed home from a rehearsal & caught the last half of the tour opener at the Sierra Nevada Brewery on KVMR. Reed Mathis was on bass, not too shabby! Malcolm's voice sounded a bit thrashed, but it was great to hear another take on the Dead's catalog - much more "rock" if that makes sense (vs. Furthur, for instance).

Not my favorite take on the Dead song book but the new songs written with Robert Hunter are pretty impressive! I particularly like "The Seven Walkers."

Saw 7 Walkers with George Porter Jr. last weekend and loved them. My friend saw them at Wanee Fest last night and called to tell me how great they were. George only guested at a weeks worth of shows. I also love Reed Mathis on bass, he a great player and has such an infectious smile!

WHAT RITA said!! I believe that REED MATHIS from Tea Leaf Green will be on bass for the jazzfest gigs I will confirm but am 99 percent certian so far that is the case
George may play with the Walkers again in the future though as the cali gigs went great!! (fingers crossed)
BUT NOT GPJR AT THE JAZZFEST GIGS!!
I think Reed is great so that is just dandy with me !!
