If you feel strongly about something, no matter what, raise your voice, make yourself heard. If we don't, then voices like this end up as the ones being heard.......

Super Bowl XXX
"Gay" Snickers spot and Prince's phallic guitar top beefs to FCC

MARCH 5--This year's Super Bowl telecast generated about 150 complaints to the Federal Communications Commission, with the bulk of the beefs centering on Prince's halftime performance and a Snickers commercial. As seen in the letters on the following pages, many correspondents were upset because they believed that the rock star was manipulating his guitar as if it were a penis. As one viewer noted in an e-mail, the "pro-homosexual theme" of this year's event, telecast on CBS, was "disgraceful." The writer added that "just because 6% of the population is gay," porn did not need to be included in the broadcast. Another purportedly offended viewer was concerned that the halftime show would have an unfortunate lasting effect on his son, who "hoped to be a quarterback and now he will turn out gay...Thanks CBS for turning my son GAY." The Snickers commercial--in which two mechanics accidentally kiss as they jointly eat a candy bar--repulsed some football fans, one of whom wrote of feeling "violated" by the ad. "God knows, I didn't turn on the superbowl expecting to be tricked into watching gay sex!" One woman reported that her son exclaimed, "What the?!" when he saw the Snickers commercial. "My husband rushed in to see the men kissing. This violates our religious beliefs and exposes our children to obscene and disgusting material they are taught are wrong. I want something done about this!!"

You can see some of the letters here. http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2007/0305072fcc1.html

The Snickers ad just sucked. Period. But, a lot of ads sucked. As far as Prince's halftime show, WHAT?! Some people have perverted minds.

ok, i'm not sure what was the intention of the original post....

it seems to me it could be an effort to start some bickering about homosexuality, morality, and blah blah blah...

maybe it does or maybe it doesn't, but appears to me this thread does not belong on this board/bored.

*therefore, i made my voice heard

Trying to guess other folks intentions has got me trouble more than once, but I concur that this seems out of place here.

Glinda seems to get it. The point is not to debate the merits of the commerical. The point is to show the types of views that get heard and the need for people to speak out and counter them. Think about the issues that get discussed on this board the problems in New Orleans, wetlands protection etc. Just as people passionately expressed their views (and I disagree with them) on that halftime show, people are doing the same with the issues I just mentioned and more. Don't think for a moment that there are not people writing letters and being heard say they don't wan't aid to go to New Orleans because it's a sinful city, or that "they shouldn't have chosen to live there in the first place". Don't think letters aren't being written to network news shows saying "I'm tired of hearing about New Orleans" or writing their leaders saying "I don't want my tax dollars to go down there because my state needs........." and on and on, for any important issue.

If you don't think your voice matters on an issue realize that there are people who may believe views you oppose that damn well DO believe their voice matters and they are making it heard.

The beauty of freedom of speech is that everyone has the right to be heard. The responsibility of freedom of speech is to use it to ensure that all sides are heard.

Vote, write letters, whatever. However small a contribution, it matters.

Hope that clears it up.

150 complaints out of how many millions??? (sorry, accountant here)

Although, if the FCC wastes their time on this, maybe they'll leave PBS alone.
