....1974...I was 16 and had tickets to go and see Elton John @ the Garden. It was Thanksgiving Day and my Mom told me if I went that I shouldn't come home (I think that she was kidding , but I wasn't going to press the issue). I found out later that John Lennon made his appearance...and his last public concert. They sang "Whatever Gets You Through the Night" "I Saw Her Standing There" and "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds". Damn... I should have gone and forced my Mom's hand, I'm sure she would have let me come home!:D ;)
p.s. did you know that Elton is Sean Lennon's godfather?

Actually, Mac, "Dock of the Bay" was a posthumous hit. He had recorded it just a day or two prior to the crash. There was pressure from Atlantic for the Stax people to hurry out a single on Otis. Steve Cropper had to master a final version while grieving for his friend. He remembered that Otis in one of his early versions had done a seagull call before he started a version with just vocal and acoustic guitar. Cropper got the sound effect from a local recording service and put it in the front of the single. Also killed in the crash were all but two of the Bar-Kays. Founding member James Alexander was taking a later plane to the gig. He's still with the band to this day. The only person to survive the crash was trumpeter Ben Cauley of the Bar-Kays (he also appeared later on sessions like the Doobies 'Minute by Minute'). Ben was the only person on the plane who could not swim, but was the only one to live. He was asleep at the time of the crash and woke up in the middle of a lake holding on to something that floated. One of the most chilling things I've ever seen was the pieces of the plane at the Rock an Roll Hall of Fame. I didn't know they existed until I saw them last summer. I was forced to sit down.

Inventor who put whipped cream in a spray can and called it Reddi-Wip (1948), turning a dessert topping into a symbol of postwar America's drive for convenience. I never got the chance to see the Wolf perform. He was one of the true greats! I learned something I didn't know about him last night. I knew that he spent lots of time living here and that the early Chess things were cut by Sam Phillips in Memphis. Last night our local PBS station had a special about the rockabilly legends.
