Ollin Arageed? Anyone ever heard that tune?
Bay Area Grateful Dead fans at least got a taste of what the Dead's Egypt trip was like when the group played an often spectacular five-night series at Winterland that was billed as "From Egypt With Love." Slides taken by various family members on the trip were projected on a huge screen behind the stage each night. And at the last two concerts, Hamza el-Din joined the band onstage and sang the same song he'd sung at the Sound and Light Theater — a traditional wedding number called "Ollin Arageed" — and the Dead once again used the hypnotic rhythm of Hamza's tar as a launch pad for a jam. Hamza also played "Ollin Arageed" at two other concerts with the Dead later that year, including one broadcast nationally from the Capitol Theater in New Jersey.

I'm glad someone else knows who he was. I was thinking this morning that everyone would say, "Who?:

He was a great singer. Aside from his work with those groups he had some great solo stuff. Remember "A Lover's Question" and "Lover Please"? I know a fair amount about lots of types of music, but that was the stuff that really got me going as a kid. It probably is still my favorite.

I grew up in Fort Worth during the late 50's and early 60's. Pop (my dad) used to take the family to a great venue called Panther Hall. We saw Elvis and Roy play together. I was just a baby of sorts but was there...Later I saw many bands and remember most of those shows..except the Dead in 1970.. know I was there (I have the poster) but for the life of me I cannot remember :).

Can you be mugged and not hurt? I thought those went hand in hand? :)

I wondered the same thing, however, apparently, the definition of mugging does not necessarily include injury:

Mugging is a type of robbery (http://www.answers.com/topic/robbery), in which the perpetrator (the mugger) accosts the victim in a public place, such as a street or parking lot, and demands money and/or valuables.

In 2000, it was reported that Britney Spears had been crowned the queen of America's fastest growing youth movement, the teenage celibates. Spears told a German magazine that she intended to abstain from sex until her wedding night.
[I think something went terribly wrong after that ]

Today in music history I learn of the passing of Bois Sec Ardoin at 91. He was the last of his generation of creole musicians in SW Louisiana. His music lives on thanks to those who he taught and those who admired him.
