I might be a little behind, but I just heard about this today (WWOZ was promoting her fund raiser this Friday). I am thinking about trying to plant some trees ........
The journey
My name is Monique Pilié. I want to do my part to help New Orleans recover from the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. As well as the other terrible blows the city suffered, New Orleans lost 50,000 trees in Katrina and its aftermath.
Between April and October 2006, I hiked the 2175 miles of the Appalachian Trail, starting in Georgia and ending in Maine. My goal was to raise enough money to plant one tree in New Orleans for every mile I hiked, and to that end I started a non-profit organization called "Hike for KaTREEna".
On October 7 2006 I finished the Appalachian Trail, arriving at Mt Katahdin in Maine. During that time, I raised thousands of dollars for Hike for KaTREEna, but I still need to raise more, from individuals and corporate sponsors, to reach that goal of 2175 trees.
Here's how you can help us replant New Orleans:
*
*
Become a tree planter.
*
Adopt a tree to ensure it survives.
*
Suggest places where we should plant trees.
*
Let others know about the Hike for KaTREEna.
