I’m surprised there hasn’t been any mention of this show, so I guess many of you are planning on being out of town. In any case, if you’re within 100 miles of NYC, you really should get your ass to this show. The Freaks Ball is always a phenomenal party with a great crowd, and Freaks Ball X is shaping up to be the best one yet. Add in Anders and The Black Hollies, and you’re talking about one potentially epic evening.
Anyone who has seen Anders recently can attest to the fact that he is absolutely on fire right now. The most recent gig he played at Sullivan Hall in the Fall was a major scorcher, both a gut-wrenching and blissful experience. It was so amazing that one experienced concertgoer called it “The Show of the Decade.” The Freaks Ball organizers loved it so much that they immediately booked him to headline this gig. I am really excited to see Anders tear up that stage again.
I’ve never seen The Black Hollies, but I’ve been totally floored by the recordings I’ve heard. These guys are flat-out psychedelic, and they sound like they’re straight out of the ‘60s. For a proper frame of reference, think early Pink Floyd, a label that I would not apply lightly. If the live shows and studio cuts I’ve heard are any indication, they are the real deal.
The opener is Scott Metzger, Ron Johnson, and Eric Kalb. Frankly, I have no idea what they are gonna do, but I can tell ya that all three of these guys are aces in my book. The latter two are funky as Hell, and Metzger is one of the best and most versatile guitarists in the city.

In the past, these shows have broken open the careers of then-unknowns like Robert Randolph, The Duo, Bustle in Your Hedgerow, American Babies, and more. I have a hunch that Saturday will be The Black Hollies’ big moment, although Anders is gonna torch everything in his path, so he’s gotta be the main reason to get down there.
FYI, this show usually sells out, and I’m told tickets are moving briskly. I hope to see some of you at Sullivan Hall this Saturday!
