View Full Version : St. Patrick's Day in NOLA

So I just realized that while in NOLA for the 1st 2 rounds of the NCAA basketball tourney, there will be some St. Patrick's Day Parades. Having not been in NOLA for St. Patty's in 20 years, I'm hoping to get some feedback on which parade I should try to catch. NOLA.com gives me 3 choices:

1) Irish Channel Parade Uptown early Sat. afternoon.
2) Parasol's block Party
After checking out their website, I'm heavily inclined to check it out.
http://www.parasols.com/
3) Downtown Irish Club Parade from the Bywater to Bourbon.

I hear Parasol's involves thrown cabbage and carrots. Anyone with experience in these parades? The one Downtown will end on Bourbon and I imagine Pat O'Briens is a good spot for St. Patty's Day. Any input is appreciated.

Definately Parasol's & The Irish channel parade, but also check out The Downtown Irish club parade. We'll be at that one and our very own Threadheads; Seafood, RonB and Evil 1/2 of 2forthefest are marching in it.
There are also parades in Metairie & a co couple of combined St. Pat's/St. Joseph parades. You can get everything you need for an Irish dinner at one of these parades, except the corned beef! ;)

The Metarie parade is lots of fun. I caught enough produce to feed a batallion for a week. Cabbages, apples, bananas, potatoes, carrots, even stalks of celery! Wild!

Been to NOLA for 4 st Paddy's days in a row from 2000 to 2004. Parasol's block party is alot of fun (watch the parade on St Charles and then head to Parasol's). Also the parades that come through the quarter are fun. As the parade stops at traffic through the quarter the people on the floats get off and have a drink in the closest bar along the way then hop back on and ride on. The guys are in tuxedos and give away flowers for kisses. Before the "thing", it brought good crowds. I've had more than one local tell me its the third biggest event (to them) behind Mardi Gras and Jazzfest (alot of Irish in NOLA)

I have a niece who plays golf for Duke and they will be in Baton Rouge for a tournament. We were going to drive up there to watch her play a little and then come back about noon or 1pm. Will getting back to the area about 2pm allow me to catch any of the Irish Channel parade?

Just to straighten a few things out....next week Parasol's will be rocking.

Tuesday the 13th is St. Baldrick's. People sponcer others who are getting their heads shaved and all the money goes to cancer research. There will be a team, most likely from a local hair dressing school, to shave heads. The owner of Parasol's lost his brother when he was young to cancer and this is really important to him.

Then, on Thursday is the block party. It's fun, it's huge, and it's a drunken fest. Get there early and stay late.

Saturday is the parade. Goes down Magazine so you can watch it just a block from Parasol and still party there too. There'll be some good BBQ at the corner of third and Magazine too :) Maybe that's where you'll find me. This is the day you'll catch your produce. Not at the block party.

I live in the Irish Channel and chances are I'll be at all these events.

(I did make it to Markey's and Bud Rips for the down town clubs parade of their court last weekend. That'll be a fun one too, as will Metry, but I don't go that far.)

I'm a big St Pat's celebrator here in Chicago - big parade (like 200 units), party with stepdancers & bagpipes, the whole deal.

But sombody 'splain something to me: the New Orleans St Pattys produce thing. What's that all about? Why produce?

justagirl
03-07-2007, 08:58 AM
Produce: cuz after the parade you can add it to your cornbeef and you gots yourself a meal and of course, a PARTY!

Parasol's has a block party every year. It's a neighborhood pub in the Irish Channel. This is a great celebration each year and much tradition.

I spent 4 years on the near north side in the late 80's and early 90's. Lived on LaSalle, Wells and Oak Streets. I used to work at Hangge-Uppe, P.S. Chicago and 222 Chicago. I remember one St. Patrick's spent on Division St. that was a blast. Mother's, Shenannigan's, Bootlegger's, etc. Top it all off by getting a gyro and cheese fries from Five Faces to take back to the apt. to eat before passing out. OH, those where the days.

I did make the rueben rolls, but we had so much food & by the time I started frying the crawfish beignets, my timing was thrown off, so those are saved for another time. Too bad too, cuz I had made a homemade 1000 Island dipping sauce that was really good.

Liuzza's was great too; we started off with lots of onion rings, then it was a while before the food came out, so we commenced to some heavy drinking! ;) I had, 1/2 oyster, 1/2 shrimp plate, eat_ had the same, but on a po boy & he had gumbo. One of Seafood's friends had the crawfish pasta special, as did Hebjamn. evil 1/2 and another Seafood bud had the open faced roast beef with sweet potato fries, which is a specialty of the house & what I got last time. Seafood & gris gris had grilled shrimp on a salad (?) and NOLA had a monster seafood platter. We were too full for bread pudding.

There were a couple of trips to POC in the weekend somewhere. :) Jada & friend went to Jacques Imos on Friday night.
