My girlfriend and I are planning on making our first trip to Jazz fest this year.

I have heard from several people that the headliner acts cost an additional amount on top of what it costs to get into the festival. Can anyone elaborate on this?

Thanks in advance!
Devin

Hey Now Devin---That is not correct; at Jazzfest, once you are in the gate, you are all set. The various stages are open for all to enjoy, and you can come and go from stage to stage as much as you want.

Jazzfest is the most organized, well run musical festival in the world, and upon entry there is NO additional money needed, except for food and drink.

You are in for an incredible time, and I hope you have a blast!!!

Maybe they're thinking of the night shows?

That is what I thought, I just wanted to clarify to be prepared. After reading the posts on other boards, it looks like they are talking about the after parties.

So all of the bands listed are included for their respective weekends, excellent! Do the same bands from the festivals usually play night shows? I am assuming that the night shows are in the local clubs and now on the fairgrounds, correct?

Thanks again for everyone's quick replies! I am stoked for the Fest, can't wait to groove with everyone there .....

Some of the headliner bands do play night shows, some just play the actual Jazzfest itself.

Nightshows are held at clubs, bars and assorted venues throughout New Orleans, starting after Fest gets over for the evening (7 pm).

Some start at 9 or 10, but a lot of places have "late" shows that might not get rolling until 2 or 3 in the morning, often going until dawn.

ANY question you may have will be answered here with good natured advice, humor and the best of intentions. Feel free to ask away, as the people on this board (Threadheads) are passionate about both live music in general and the unique, magical essence that is New Orleans...........

there used to be big night time concerts at UNO with big name national acts(BNA's), but those have not taken place in many years.

so you likely wont find any bands/performers that normally play arenas and stadiums around town at night. when the Saenger theatre reopens in 2011 there should be the opportunity for more large shows. but there's plenty of fine music at night. i suggest checking out more local music that might not tour as much. let folks know what genres you like and there will be plenty of opinions flying.

previous years grids (shows/events outside of the festival) will give you an idea of what to expect
http://threadheads.org/09%20Grids%20in%20Excel%204-23-09.xls
http://threadheads.org/08grids.xls

and this years grids are still being compiled, so keep checking back

stlbarb is correct, you won't see any of the "big name" acts playing shows after the fest, i.e., don't expect to see Pearl Jam, or Simon and Garfunkel, or Van Morrison playing at any night venues -- there really isn't anyplace big enough to accomodate them anymore. If you want to catch them, do it at the fairgrounds.

On the other hand, you might see somebody like Jonny Lang or Elvis Costello (he and Allen Toussaint did a benefit one night at Harrah's casino) or the Funky Meters, and the clubs will be packed with local musicians from Louisiana (jazz, zydeco, blues, brass bands, etc., including some big name national acts like Dr. John). And you might see someone like the Neville Brothers -- they used to do at least one or two club shows regularly during the fest, though in recent years they have not.

You also might see some acts in the clubs that aren't booked at the fest -- for example, in the past the North Mississippi Allstars have sometimes played at a club even though they weren't booked at the fest that weekend, and you get some odd musicians showing up just because they know the city is packed with people -- Billy Idol played a club one year even though he wasn't part of the fest. And Levon Helm used to own a club in New Orleans, so has a lot of friends/contacts there -- wouldn't be surprised to see him playing at some club one evening.

http://www.jazzfestgrids.com/ is the place to find out who's playing at the clubs, but be forewarned that a lot of the club acts aren't announced until shortly before the fest.

David Bowie at the Saenger was also a good example of someone who was not booked at Fest showing up in town to be a part of the general merriment............

Yes...sometimes the fun is finding who shows up unannounced....I recall that at Make it Funky! at the Saenger, Keith Richards, Bonnie Raitt and the Blind Boys of Alabama all joined the show but were not on the program.

And then there special groupings (like Midnight Disturbers) that rarely play anywhere else together. Plus special concerts that have become traditional...various Brass Band Blow-outs...Instruments A Comin....Piano Night. Just walking down Frenchman street any night...Once you get tuned into the club scene...its hard to find time to eat.

And the " less than big name" bands that play night shows after fest sometimes such as WSP and Govt Mule. ie. the Deep End...

Eric, any idea if Panic may try and do a night gig during Fest?

What is the Municipal Auditorium's status?

I saw Phil Lesh and Friends there at night after his Jazzfest set. It probably holds around 10,000 people or so, and it would be a good venue for WSP or other bands with a similar sized folllowing.

I suppose the CAC might also work for them, though hopefully it wont come to that...............

Municipal Auditorium is still closed, unclear if or when it will ever reopen.

Most recently (December) there was only a single bidder who submitted a proposal to the city for rennovating it. I gather the damage was extensive during Katrina, and it's not a high priority for the city.

Hi, Devin,
Welcome to the forum. You & your GF are going to have a blast.

What everyone has said previously is true - there is no additional charge for the headliners.

Just want to add a quick note about the "special access" categories, though, such as The Big Chief VIP Experience, The Grand Marshal VIP Pass, and The Krewe Of Jazz Fest. These are more expensive and are available for purchase here at this web site.

There is also the world famous WWOZ Brass Pass, which provides special hospitality perks as well, and supports our beloved New Orleans public radio station, WWOZ.

Of course, no matter how you choose to Fest, the whole thing is designed for a good time. Enjoy & Let The Good Times Roll!

What is the info on WWOZ (website and location on the dial)? In STL we have a fantastic public radio station KDHX 88.1, i'd be interested to see if they are anything alike.

a true mix of music genres with a few spoken word shows thrown in.
Tuesday 4-7pm CST Howzit Bayou plays Cajun, zydeco, swamp, and other LA music styles.

but there are lots of good shows.

you can listen online to live shows, or select a show from the past 2 weeks in the archive.

note: we lost an intregal part of KDHX this week when Larry Weir past away.
he helped build the station and was the operations manager for 22 years. he hosted the Songwriters Showcase, and was hands on in getting many of these musicians booked into clubs in STL.
i am proud to call him friend. he will be missed personally & professionally.
