Can anyone recommend some good blues, hard swampy stuff for 2nd weekend? I'm looking at the grids for 2nd weekend and I know for the funk, we're doing the Bayou Rendezvous. I see Papa Mali with Henry Butler, and Kirk Joseph....wondering if that'll be more funk than blues. I see Anders at midnight Saturday at DBA but that's all....Johnny Sketch is out cuz of the Bayou....not sure if Big Al would do the trick for him....thoughts?
Thanks all!!

Walter "Wolfman" Washington
Not sure if this qualifies as hard-core blues, but we wandered into his show late night last year on Wednesday at d.b.a, and were completely blown away. Joining us in the crowd were Stanton, Karl D, Will Bernard and other musicians, equally floored. He's on my must-see list this year.

Grayson Capps - 5/3 @ dba (down home caol miner blues)
Tab Benoit/Snooks Eaglin 5/4 Rock 'n Bowl
Sonny Landreth/Anders - 5/6 Rock ' Bowl
Also John Cleary plays a few times - he's not my favorite, but I would categorize him as blues.

That 12am show at dba with Burnside Exploration will rock. That's one of RL's boys so he'll start out by saying those famous RL words: Well, well, well.

Guitarist Garry Burnside is the uncle of his sole bandmate, drummer Cedric Burnside, in their duo Burnside Exploration, even though the two are only two years apart in age; Garry Burnside is the youngest son of bluesman R.L. Burnside, while Cedric Burnside is R.L. Burnside's grandson. Uncle and nephew grew up playing with their mutual progenitor and with his associate, Junior Kimbrough, and they have absorbed that earlier generation's sense of northern Mississippi blues along with, in Garry Burnside's case, a taste for Jimi Hendrix-style heavy fuzz guitar riffing. Thus, their debut album, The Record, is a noise-guitar bonanza. Although the Burnsides claim authorship on all but three of the tracks, some of them are quite familiar blues exercises, including "You Don't Love Me," which was being credited to Willie Cobbs before they were born. No matter. Burnside Exploration's explorations may not extend far beyond the confines of their upbringing, but that only means they are faithful and effective carriers of the flame of basic, hardcore electric blues into the 21st century. Hey funk fan, was that Mooney show when he opened for Super Heavy Organ? I was at that show and was extremely impressed despite not really being a big fan of blues or solo guitar players.

oh yeahhh!! I forgot about John Mooney....
He saw Black Snake Moan last night and loved the soundtrack. He asked if he could find some music like that.....I'm thinking we can pull it off.
Hey Lis, I would second the Tab/Snooks and Sonny/Anders shows at Rock-n-Bowl. John Mooney as well - I was sorry to miss him at the LMF party on Saturday, but my back was killing me and I had to go. Also, for some greasy, down home blues with a swamp pop tinge, check out Tony Joe White at the fairgrounds second weekend. A friend sent me a CD the other day and it rocks.

If he's looking for blues like in black snake moan, these are my picks: John Mooney, North MSAllstars, Burnside Exploration for night shows. AT fest, Mooney, Louis "Gearshift" Youngblood and Po Henry and Tookie.

Awww, thanks so much Steffie - it's my hunni, Denbear who's got the blues actually. He's having a very difficult and depressing day . . . which does have me a bit blue too, but I'll be okay. I just hope he will also.
Thanks for the love, I'll pass some along to him - and here's some right back at'cha!!

You know - it occurs to me that Chris Thomas King is absent from the lineup and evening shows....he would be a good sound for your baby.
Corey Harris - Mississippi to Mali a good album
Henry Butler - The Game Has just Begun - album
John Rankin
Kim Wilson
to name a few..... (none of these seem to be on this year's fest line up - although I admit I have not studied it and memorized it yet - need the dalies..... ha ha).....but these are good names for him to search on itunes or whatever he may look at....

Yeah you right, Fred. Lucky Peterson is a treat, wish I was gonna be there!
Here are the blues picks from the second weekend schedule that I noticed, some previously mentioned, others not. Allman Brothers Band, , Taj Mahal, The Holmes Brothers, Anders Osborne, John Mooney & Bluesiana, Snooks Eaglin, Luther Kent & Trickbag, Deacon John, , Henry Gray & the Cats, J. Monque'D Blues Band, Washboard Chaz Blues Trio?, Louis "Gearshift" Youngblood, Po' Henry & Tookie, Coco Robicheaux & Spiritland,
Kinda makes you wonder how they are gonna fill up that damn "Blues Tent?"

local* NOLA blues artists you may be able to catch around town during fest:
John Fohl (yes, he plays w/ the Dr., but he's awesome on his own)
Nelson Lunding (does he still play keyboards w/ J'MonqueD?)
Sunshine Barnes (he does blues in addition to zydeco)
Johnny Sansone (great blues harp & he may throw in some accordian)
or combinations of these artists.
often find them at Dos Jefes Uptown Cigar Bar - no cover & less smokey than some other places due to great ventilation system.
also check out Rivershack for local bands - genre varies.
has anybody seen Paula & the Pontiacs lately?
* not sure if they're all still local

NOthing against any of these bands, but if corona's virgin wants black snake moan type blues, some don't fit that bill. Now if he's just a general blues lover, it's all good.

I don't know about swamp, but for blues guitar Buddy Guy is, uh, fairly decent. He'll make it sing on Friday night. Expect him on the Jerry Lee Lewis show at the fest, also. Now that I think about it, there's swamp in that combo ;-)

I first saw Washboard Chaz with the Tin Men at a LMF in-store a couple of years ago and really fell in love with him. Didn't make Chazfest last year (due to extreme r**nosity), but I hope to make it this year! :D
P.S. - I'd make a wiseass comment about your Coronita ringing Chaz' bell - but I'm too nice ;)
