For any of you all in NOLA this weekend, don't miss John Scofield at Tipitina's on Saturday night. (Hell, go Friday, too, because The Chilluns are a kick, as well). John recorded his last album in the Bywater at Piety St. and will have Jon Cleary and George Porter Jr., who played on the CD with him. They do great takes on a bunch of gospel tunes. (Scofield had intended to do a blues album but made a slight switch to gospel).
I saw the band at the Monterey Jazz Festival last September and they were outstanding. That version had Shannon Powell on drums and Roland Guerin on bass but it will be Terrance Higgins and George in those spots at Tip's. They do a version of a Hank Williams tune called "Angel Of Death" and the long solo intro Scofield did at Monterey was worth the price of admission.

If we have any energy left after the game this afternoon, we might make it out to Tips for this show....I heard a rumor that Gumbo might be celebrating his B-Day there tonight too....

Awesome night at Tip's. The place was packed and FULL of exhilaration after the Saints stunning win. John Scofield loved it, saying it was a good day to be in New Orleans. By the time he sampled himself and started subdividing his own riff playing off the sample, the shit was getting pretty deep. He really dug in and the band jammed hard, as well. When John threw a little "When The Saints Go Marching In" into the middle of a solo, the whole place erupted in the Who Dat chant. Great great night!

wish we could've been there; saw the band play in Mpls last year at the Dakota; at halftime during the Saints vs Vikings, we were doing an abbreviated second line (on Lake and Bryant in Mpls!) with other Saints fans, led by the Jack Brass Band.
Go Saints!
