Looking at attending the fest for the first time in 2010, but am confused as to how actual programme runs - eg how long do artists play for? how do you know who plays what stage - ie how do you plan where to be & when to hear favoured artists/acts?
Thanks in anticipation.
Cheers

The detailed schedule of what act plays on what stage on what date and time is called the "cubes". They will be released around the first of April. Once you have that information, you'll be able to plan your personal schedule.
The Jazzfest site will contain the cubes, plus a map of the Fairgrounds, pointing out the location of the stages. If you'd like to see what the schedules were like in the past, check out www.swagland.com. And hang around this bored for lots of advice and insight into the Jazzfest experience.

Gates open at 11, first bands start about 10 minutes after that, and the last acts wrap up about 7pm. Most acts play for about an hour; the headliners may play 90 minutes to 2 hours.

Greetings! Not to jack the thread here but will be attending for the first time as well this year and was curious about the ticket situation; specifically if/when they sell-out (both general admission as well as the Krewe of Jazz Fest since my wife will need re-entry privledges for our littlest family member). Looking forward to a return to the beautiful city and some amazing music!
NICE JOB on that evening show spread!!! Cannot wait to see it populated!

Besides loving music, we love helping Fest virgins and even returning festers. :D Tickets have never sold out. Krewe of jazzfest tickets are new I believe but I don't recall any of the special tickets selling out.

Two years ago, the Grand Marshall VIP did sell out, but that wasn't till April. For Krewe of Jazzfest, you have some time, I think.
If all you need from the VIP is the re-entry privileges, consider a WWOZ brass pass instead. $400 now (going up soon, maybe to $425), it covers both weekends and includes re-entry. The KofJ are $350 for 1st weekend, $400 for 2nd, and once you add the Ticketmaster fees, you'll be over $400 even just for one weekend. The Brass Pass also gets her and a guest (you) into the WWOZ tent, where you can relax & cool off without leaving the grounds.

plus oz brass pass gets you these things in the tent: fruit, iced coffee and internet access, and misters!

Good news all around then as I wasnt quite ready to drop $400 on a pass this minute and right on with the brass pass information; sounds like the way to go, especially if I can tag along into whatever cool oasis as well!
We are coming in from Colorado and while I think the kid would be fine in the car, the humidity down there might be too much for him ;) .....so we will probably need some type of respite from the heat, the tunes, and our rowdy krewe.
Y'all rock; have a great new years!

Now that we are allowed back in the Grandstand, the seats in the upper level indoors are a great place to cool off and relax. Other than some interesting interviews, it's fairly quiet up there. There are a few other nice places to hide from the noise and heat as well.

Hey Now twodogsbrew, why do I know your board name???
I have been racking my brain (not a very labor intensive process, to be sure) but I am sure that I have been to a place called Two Dogs, but am unsure where it may have been...........
Am I way off base here, or does your board handle come from a microbrewery somewhere in Baltimore?
Matthew.
PS---Check in here with the board occcasionaly when you get the chance; these people know more about New Orleans and Jazzfest than anyone around, and are always glad to answer any question, no matter how obscure.

or does it come from that classic joke:
"Why do you ask, TwoDogsBrewing?"
(i found some leftover sarcasm for 2009 and need to use it up before the end of the year)

Stax is right about the Grandstand. We found much-needed respite there with our girls when we brought them to Fest when they were very young.
I also suggest bringing a jogger to push around your tyke. They are great for naps and the insta-shade they provide is invaluable. You can even drape a sheet over the top to provide full-body shade if necessary.

Makes me spin a little thinking about jazzfest virgins. What a wonderful moment that first time you walk thru the gate onto that sacred ground!
Thinking about kids: tdb, no worries on the food front for your kiddo--if s/he is old enough to eat real food. There's an amazing array of food choices at fest plus over by the kids tent, theres a booth that sells pbj, mac and cheese and rice krispie treats!

You may want to get there early so you can warmup beers across the street from the entrance. Lot's of fun things for sale outside the gates also.

Y'all are getting me all kinds of giddy out here; finally making it to Jazzfest will be amazing, it has been a long time in the making and we are doing in proper with friends and family coming in from all over the country. Was at a show out here last night with Leo from the Meter's getting down not 20 feet away and we could barely contain our excitement. Ready to get down BIG TIME with too long between now and then.
Matthew: Two Dogs Brew is my brewery.....but it only serves the 'pub' in my basement; nice little setup with a few homebrews on tap at any given time that fail to make me any money but does manage to keep me and my friends smiling!
Cheers to y'all, enjoy the holiday.

Hi TwoDogsBrew and welcome!!! I am excited for you as I know that you are going to absolutely love JazzFest, and I imagine you'll be delightfully hooked, like the rest of us. It is the greatest festival in the world. Not only is the music incredible, but the food, the people (including everyone on this forum), the all around vibes and good feeling. This board has any information and tips that will help make your first fest experience most enjoyable. Look forward to meeting you....keep posted, as the Threadheads meet every day at fest, and it's a good way to get to know a lot of great folks:)

Another first timer here! I'm seeing a couple different estimated dates for the release of the band (cube?) schedules. Feb? April? I'm coming in for the 2nd weekend and I want to see Pearl Jam. What days do the big names usually play? I probably won't be in the entire weekend so I'm trying to plan which days to visit.

Your confusion is because if it follows recent history, there will be two announcements. The first will be the "dailies", which will list which day each performer will play. The second will be the "cubes", which will give the times of the performances and the stage assignments.
Pearl Jam will almost certainly play the Main Stage (Acura) in the closing spot of the day (5:00 or 5:30 until 7:00), so the dailies should give you what you need.
If I had to guess, I'd say there's a 60% chance they play Saturday, 30% Friday, 9% Sunday, 1% Thursday.
See the recent year announcements dates at http://jazzfest.swagland.com/jfnewsdates.html.
Based on that, I'd expect the dailies to come out sometime in the next 3-4 weeks.

actually, that was lost days ago. this was one of my non-sarcastic posts.
i work with numbers, you can make them do anything.
besides, Swag's numbers were based on his years of jazzfest wisdom not any real statistics. gut feelings are usually pretty accurate. i'd wager its a saturday gig for PJ. and i'm sure my reply made him smile, maybe even a small chuckle.

we'll be gentle........
but do go to fest more than saturday. a regular ticket on another day is well worth it. try to go on thursday & friday and then you will have learned so much about fest, it will be helpful on saturday. you will likely want to return on sunday too.

Off the top of my head, they generally start and end near the Heritage Stage. I believe they use the backstage area there to form. They typically head down the walkway in the direction of the Gentilly Stage but turn around towards the Folklife Area and back around in a somewhat circular fashion.
