View Full Version : New Year's Eve in NOLA?

We got all spontaneous and booked a trip last minute! We usually always stay at the Frenchman, but being last minute, we snagged a room at the Lamothe House through Bookit.com (thanks SO much Threadheads for the Bookit.com recommendation!).
There's SO much amazing music going on it's mindblowing! We're centering things around Eric Lindell at dba on 12/31.
But also, Tin Men at DBA 12/30.
Hope to catch Big Sam at the Maple Leaf on 1/1.
Also hitting Paul Sanchez and Alex McMurray at Herems Bar on 1/2.
OMG!
Huzzah to spontaneity!!! We haven't been to NOLA since fest, which is VERY rare for us, so we're "rewarding" our selves for having had so much self control the past year!
So, who else will be in town and what will y'all be hitting?!
Hoping to have my first TH "hello" ACTUALLY in NOLA and perhaps a bevvie or two (or six).

I'll be there, 12/31-1/3, Staying at the Frenchmen. I haven't been to NOLA since Satchmofest so I'm really jonesing. I'm bringing my friend Christine who loves the City as much as I do, so I'm sure we'll be going to as many shows as possible. I haven't done a lot of research into who's playing where yet, but the Wild Magnolias are rumored to be at Donna's on New Year's Eve, and the Soul Rebels and Big Sam are on Blue Nile's schedule for 1/1 & 1/2. E-mail me and we'll figure out a way to catch up with each other. bigdag 1 at comcast dot net.

WHOO HOO! i bet it's so pretty down there during the holiday season. I have to make it down there one of these Christmas' or NYE.
I would love to check out New Orleans for New Year's Eve someday. Anders Osborne's MYSPACE page has him playing at Tipitinas in the French Quarter this New Year's Eve.

I will be there ;) :p Not sure of my plans yet but definitely leaning toward Lindell @ dba, Tin Men night b4 and Paul's Hermes Bar show-those are great shows, especially with Alex in tow.
Good for you LynnMargaret..no better place to be to ring in the New Year!!!!

I'm hoping to make it 4 NYE's in NOLA in a row. NOt sure when i'll be in and out but i'm leaning toward anders. Then again I could see him on 1/2 at the rocknbowl. If you're a lover of hill country blues, you might want to catch cedric burnside and lightning malcolm on 1/1 at dba or if you see anders on 1/2, looks like they are opening for him. :D

Considering Soul Rebels at LBTR, Honey Island Swamp Band at Maple Leaf, Dumpsta/Papa Gros at Howlin' Wolf, and Galactic at Tips.
Anyone have any recommendations? What is Le Bon Temps Roule like? I know Soul Rebels play there every Thursday.
Galactic and Dumstafunk are both expensive ($60-70).

Galactic and Dumstafunk are both expensive ($60-70).
All good options, but Soul Rebels at Le Bon Temps would probably be my fourth choice of those four for a few reasons. Le Bon Temps is a fun college-type bar when it is not too packed. It has two rooms, but only one in which you can experience the music, and it can get very, very crowded and difficult to get to the bar for a drink and come back to your spot. It is also pretty far away from the other places you'd probably like to be, so it would be tough to change your mind once you're there unless you want to get back into a cab for another long, not-inexpensive ride. And the Soul Rebels themselves can be hit-or-miss in my experience--partly owing to the fact that it never seems to be the same lineup. When I saw them most recently in October they were great however.
I could make a good case for each of the other three options and would probably be happy at any of them. But if there was a decent option in the Frenchmen St. area, that's probably where I'd lean because of the sheer number of other options, and the general fun to be had all over that neighborhood.

I'm leaning toward Frenchmen too, but the Dumpsta/PGF show at the Howlin' Wolf does include "open premium bar", and munchies. Could be worth the $70.

Wahoo!!!!!!!!!!!!! My friend and I just decided to head down nye day. We'll be at tips french quarter for anders and cyril that night, although kermit at vaughans is tempting. Undecided on Friday but Saturday will likely be anders and cedric and Malcolm at RnB.
NYE in NOLA or St. Marys Co? Lets see, celebrate with great music, wonderful locals or stay home and watch Dick Clark? Oh Santa....

I SOOOO know what you mean, ladies! The hub has a thing for alchohol drenched misery themed ANYTHING - books, plays, bands, so alas, that's where we'll be. He's had some nice conversations with Luke Allen before.
And really, they have grown on me (albeit sloooooooowly) over the years.
I think we're throwing in Walter Wolfman Washington somewhere up in our NYE mix, so you know, balance in the universe and all!!! ;)
*ETA* Also might squeeze in Paul Sanchez at Chickie Wah Wah - never been there and omg I've never seen him. Thanks for the heads up on that one, Big Dag!

Me thinks you have a groovy thing to be STUCK doing Rita!! I briefly flirted with the idea of going to the left coast to ring in the new year with Bobby and Phil!! But alas not going to happen no NOLA either. I am currently torn between celebrating with the Rads in Philly, Mule in NYC or Boston or Worcester Ma for First Night

i know YOU know better, but i must share a NYE parking story (from the 90's).
we decide to go to NOLA for NYE, stayed at the old New Court Inn (I-10 & Read) and took a bus to the 1/4 - so we would not need a designated driver. we had a great time, partied all night and took the bus back after dawn.
but there were some guys we met who drove to the quarter, and since there were hundreds of cars parked along the river flood wall they ignored the NO PARKING painted on the walls. they towed every one of those cars. not a good way to start off the new year. (and of course it was his brother's car and they were suppose to head out first thing, etc).
moral of the story: if you did not pay to park, its likely not legal. if it says no parking, it means no parking. and dont park withing 15 feet of an intersection/corner.
my other NYE story is more recent, when the Rams played the Saints in the playoffs. it was $%^& cold and we were not prepared for that. bring your winter coat, hat & gloves.
Have fun, stay safe and dance your arses off!

In almost 15 years of visiting New Orleans I had never been to Coops, although I had walked past it probably hundreds of times. Before my trip last October I reviewed the food threads from the bored, especially the one where people said what their first stop would be upon arriving New Orleans. Because of the overwhelming number of positive responses naming Coops, I made sure to go there--and also made sure to get the seafood gumbo about which so many raved. After such a build-up, I was supremely underwhelmed with Coops; and in particular the gumbo was some of the least impressive I've ever had...in New Orleans or anywhere else. It tasted like dishwater. If it wasn't for the very good Smoked Duck Quesadilla that SeeFood recommended, I wouldn't have even finished a single dish (which is an extremely rare occurrence for me). And the service was none too good or prompt either. I won't be rushing back to Coops.

That was the worst Coops meal I have ever eaten, with the exception of the Duck Quesadilla, and the service is crazy bad nowadays...even went in there during a an early evening when nothing major was happening in town and still got poor service and substandard food...Coops is off my list for now sad to say---mentioned it to the girl behind the bar and got the "whatever" look

Lovely to meet everyone that I met, however briefly in some cases - my cab arrived at CWW, seriously, about 10 seconds after the bartender called for it - only being used to Atlanta's sub-sub-substandard cab service, I thought I had another 10 minutes or so to make some rounds!
Can't wait til Fest proper to get some more time in with all y'all!
It was tricky though, being out and about and not knowing which strangers to approach! Bob kept saying "You should all wear pins or something." Secret handshake?

Coops is funny. the waiters are surly and slow, but it's the first place I ever went in New Orleans (along with Irene's) and I like it. I usually get a couple of beers and the deep fried seafood thingy. I'm not a huge Gumbo fan when I'm down there...but my girlfriend Nedine liked it.

Yeah, Dan, we missed you for Junco Partners at Maple Leaf Saturday night....
I refuse to blame...the Gas Station chicken...
I guessing that this is not a local delicacy, but rather a "poultry"-based food that you actually bought from a local gas station and ate?
Nah, I'm sure that had nothing to do with your condition...
What, were they all out of the nasty three-day old hotdogs on the rollers?

Hey, don't knock the Gas Station "Crack Chicken" until you've tried it.
I was afraid Lisa's brother's arteries were starting to clog after he ate so much of that stuff once he moved here. I guess the intake of his new-found fave beverage (Abita Amber) kept his blood flowing. Same for Gumbo's arteries, I'm sure. But when Dan goes on his Lenten abstinence program, we have to monitor his chicken intake closely.

When in the 1/4 definitely hit those spots but when in the hood on the way home from the Leaf or RnB, the chicken hits the spot. Depending on where you get it, it is good (and fresh). Some places it is subpar as it has sat for a bit.

Fried chicken and potato logs from the gas station. The Chester's is edible, but not the best.
Half the stop-and-robs here have smokers out back for their smoked chicken and ribs too. Nothing like pulling up to the Exxon at 2:00 am and it looking like the place is on fire from all the smoke pouring out.

I usually just skip the chicken and go for the smoked brisket sandwich anyway!

I guess if I had a car in NOLA, I'd know more about Gas Station chicken. My korean grocery has a decent po'boy, but no sign of smokers!

YUP, lynnmargaret did good because I had on my contacts instead of my glasses and my hair is barely blonde now and much shorter!
Have never tried to post a pic - my tech skillz are sadly lacking, so who knows if this will work:
