View Full Version : How to pronounce stuff in New Orleans

I think we need a thread on proper pronunciation, to help the newbies (and some of us veterans, as well).

Calliope --- Kal-ee-ope (not like the musical instrument)
Burgundy -- Berr-gun-dee (accent in the middle)
Tchoupitoulis --- Chop - i - too - lus (I think)

I stayed in a place on Pauger Street last year -- never did find out how to pronounce.

Others???

I use New Awlins, but lately I've been entranced by the subtle addition of the second "ee" sound in Awlins, as in: Nu Aw Leeins. It's all run together so it's hard to pick out the ee sound...

Basically, take just about anything that starts with a "th" and change it to a "d" (i.e. these, them and those would be dese, dem and dose). Also, anything ending in "er" becomes "ah" or "uh" (i.e. sister, brother, computer becomes sistah, brothuh, computah) There are also your basic middle "r" sounds which are normally replaced by a "w" (i.e. quarter, heart, park becomes quawtah, hawt, and pawk)

Heart (aka hawt) can be used as a term of endearment by old lady Yats. Such as "Oh Hawt, you have no idea how hawd it was to find a pawking spot in Da Quawtahs when I was tryin' to go to da French Mawket da other day." (Da Quawtahs = French Quarter)

LMAO Festvet...story about the venarable Conductor...when I was a little pot o' roux-whenever I saw Mr. Fiedler I always thought the circus was in town because of that moustache of his-now I look at pictures and it doesn't seem wild at all-guess it was just my youthful exhuberance

Ah, now see - I grew up watching Maestro Fiedler conduct the Boston Symphony and the Boston Pops . . . my granddad used to say when watching them, that he hoped I would play the piccolo (he thought it was funny) - good times!

We jokingly call him "Tab buh-NOYT" so much around here, I'm afraid I'm gonna call him that to his face sometime.... :o

if he's got enough Courvoisier in him, he may not even notice. :)

I sure did notice him sipping that (Co va se a) all night at a recent show. Played with his eyes closed the last 30 minutes. But damn he's nice.

Marigny- mar-uh-knee
Chartres-Charters, i think
bayou-byo or byooo?
praline- prawleen or praleen?

I caught some visitor viewin' this old thread. No wonder my cabbie a few years back had no idea what I was talking about.

I asked where the mar-ja-knee area was. He looked at me like I was a tourista!!!

This is a great thread for sure.

I still remember being slurged in a taxi trying to get to the old Howlin' Wolf and telling the cabbie to turn onto Ca-lie-o-pee. I might have been speaking swahili. Since it's actually pronounced Cal-ee-ope

Yeah, I do, but thought it may need to be cleared up for any newbies. I'm not a beer dinker myself, but that strawberry abita was really good last year... sort of like a champagne more than a beer.
