Hey everyone,

I just spoke with Rhonda (Delta) and it seems as though she and her husband Mark very much need our Threadhead KARMA! He went to the Doctor today to treat an injury to his back but ended up with a life threatening problem after the Doc gave him more tests.
He has blockage in his heart and was only going to have to have one stent put in yet it turns out after more testing that he has much more blockage and will possibly need bi-pass surgery tomorrow or Thursday. (Delta will fill in more)
I asked her if she wished for me to spread word in order to get the ever so blessed Threadhead Karma. She responded with a Yes and Thank you!
Thanksgiving is one of her family’s favorite holidays. Her children are in town, which really helps her with support.
Thanks be to a back injury that will allow them to have many more Thanksgivings around their table.

Love you Delta! XO

Thanks everyone. Looks like triple bypass surgery is in our immediate future. We'll know more tomorrow morning when we meet with the cardiac surgeon, but both of the current doctors are pushing for scheduling the surgery NOW, so I expect it to be done as soon as they can get him in. One artery is 100% occluded, one 99% occluded and one 80% occluded. They didn't even finish the heart cath before deciding he needed surgery. Not what we expected to hear.

Karma of some description was already in play though, since the reason he went to the doc to begin with had nothing to do with his heart. It was just through having a really good relationship with the doctor that they even caught the heart stuff. The doc just did some "routine checks" since he was already in the office and it had been 5 years since his last work-up.

Prayers for your husband, you and your family Rhonda. I am confident that if this man is strong enough to handle you, he will come through this even stronger than he was before. Among the things I will give thanks for this year is the fact that he had this doctor's visit that allowed them to catch it in time to do something about it.

The karma is apparently working. It looks like it may only be a double bypass, rather than a triple. Surgery is tentatively scheduled for Monday afternoon. His cardiologist and GP wanted to let him come home today and go back for the surgery but he has developed some irregularities in his heartbeat and they didn't think it would be safe to send him home. They're trying to get him scheduled for surgery Friday rather than Monday (and to be totally selfish about it, I'd love for them to be able to do that so all our kids are still in town when he actually goes under the knife) but it's about a 50-50 chance of that.

The cardiac surgeon finally showed up about 7:00 and his first words were "90% of the people with this sort of damage in this area of the heart are dead. We see this on more autopsies than live people." He then went on to explain what was going on, with the twenty seven eight-by-ten
color glossy pictures with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back, and told us what they're going to do and how they're going to do it.

We are incredibly fortunate that, through a series of coincidences/miracles/acts of God, they caught this when they did and they can fix it.

This is shaping up to be the best/worst Thanksgiving we've ever had. Well, except for that one year with my mother-in-law. The kids are cooking and bringing it to us tomorrow and my youngest daughter is baking a suck-up cake for the nurses who have to work on a holiday.

His cardiac surgeon looks just like the King of Spades.

glinda

King of spades sounds like a good omen for a surgeon. Hoping the surgery can happen Friday, and that the positive karma and love keeps on giving you blessings and healing and skillful physicians. Happy Thanksgiving.

Thank you to every single one of you who has posted, called, emailed and texted with good thoughts and prayers. He is tentatively scheduled for surgery Monday afternoon about 1:00 (his biggest concern is that he'll miss the game Monday night) and the doc thinks it will last about 3-5 hours.

His 3 doctors are all really great individually, but we're not sure they're on the same page about what to do and when to do it. We've been feeling guilty about the frustration of not getting him into surgery for over a week but his primary doc told us this morning that he's frustrated about it too, so we don't feel so bad now. The first 2 docs don't know why the surgeon is waiting so long and he apparently won't give them a reason either. Meanwhile, Mark is lying around the hospital doing nothing but racking up more medical bills for us and the insurance company and getting the same meds he could be taking at home, but they won't release him. No reason why from the surgeon, and the cardiologist and GP don't know either. The 2 kids who live out of town are home for the week for the first time in months and they have to pop in and out to see him and both will be leaving the day before he has the surgery. Arrrgggghhhhh......

We're very thankful they're taking care of him but the stress level (mine, at least) is sky high. Tagamet is the food of the gods.

If I was the betting type, I'd bet that the surgeon has some Thanksgiving family "obligations" (plans) that are keeping him out of the OR over the holiday weekend. That would really suck, if it's true, but there's not much you can do about it other than vent. Vent away, dahlin'.

I'm glad to see that Mark's spirits are still positive.

Disclaimer: I have not been through what you are going through....but the folks who I know well who have gone through such surgery..is they wake up feeling much better (after the initial invasion has healed) than they did before. They had a baseline for comparison..needing it, getting it fixed and feeling so much better.

My prayer and hope is that he feels the same.

Hugs to you Delta...know you are loved and supported by those that wish they could do more.

Thank you all. Headed to the hospital shortly for many hours of sitting around and waiting. The kids have all worked it out to stay in town one more day so they'll be around (probably making a huge mess at the house) until after he's out of surgery. He should be coming out of anesthesia in time for kick-off. The good news is that all his doctors, from the pulmonary guy to the surgeon, are very optimistic and amazed at how good his test results are and have commented on how surprised they are, given the extent of the blockage. They just shake their heads and mumble when he tells them there was no chest pain and no shortness of breath and no clue there was anything wrong with his heart. I personally believe it's because he has such a big heart though. Plenty to go around for himself and everyone else. And after 26 years of marriage, it's nice to know that I literally still make his heart skip a beat when I walk in the room. I saw it on the ekg so I know it's true!

The good news is he's not dead, but he's not out of surgery yet either. The Catholic hospital we're at apparently runs on Catholic time too, so his noon surgery schedule was more like 2:30. On the other hand, our parish priest was just in here and said a quick prayer for Mark, and for a Saints win. After he left, the woman across the waiting room chuckled and said she sure hoped that prayer worked tonight.

One of the good (what an odd, but appropriate, word to choose) things about being here is that it's like old home week in the waiting room. Of the 4 families in the waiting room when we got here, we've known 3 of them for 20+ years because our kids all went to school together and we go to the same church. There's something sort of comforting to not only know them, but know you're going through the same thing at the same time that they are. And in a strange way there are no "wrong" words to each other in that situation.

Emails like this (and wine) are the kind of stuff that's gotten us through the stress. My daughter received this from a friend earlier and we've been laughing about it since.

Don't worry. This building will worry for you

We just sort of tried to ignore it, thinking it was rude to the doctor, until the second time it happened and he asked if we were getting the scores. Rhon -

I don't have much of a voice left after leaving it at Da Dome last night - but I DO want to express my deep and heartfelt hope that Mark's recovery goes smoothly and swiftly.

My stepdad went though an eerily similar "hey kids, let have a triple cardiac bypass NOW!" situation about 15 or years ago - so I can very much empathize with what you and your family are going through; I'm sending all of the good, healing karma and vibes I've got to Jackson (singing, "It's Jackson-bound")

My in-the-hospital suggestion is that he sit up as much as possible even though it can be uncomfortable. When he gets to the stage that they want him to walk, he should do this as much as they want him to. My lung collapsed, so I was in ICU for several days, but sitting up is what really sped up my recovery.

So I don't mess up Linza's puppies ('poopies' would be more accurate for our own) and kitties thread....

A minor complication with the re-routed artery from his lung to his heart resulted in some bleeding that required transfusions. They couldn't get his blood pressure up high enough to get him up moving around, and the longer he had to lie in the bed the worse it was. They finally took the heart drain out yesterday afternoon and got him up walking. The chest tube should be out today we hope, and he's possibly coming home tomorrow. He's out of CCU so the weird visiting hours no longer apply and so far, the only restrictions on his diet are to cut down on salt. The pain is low enough he's only taking Tylenol and Darvocet although he can have stronger stuff if he needs it.

As for me, after five decades I've finally learned to let go and say "yes" when someone offers help. I tried doing it all myself the first week he was in the hospital and that didn't work out so well. I'll be back in the studio today for the first time in almost 3 weeks (so very, very little done for Treme so far!) and I'm looking forward to that. I probably won't get much done but it will be a break from suffering vicariously every time he winces. Now that he's out of CCU I'm sleeping better and my friends have been incredibly supportive. The kids are gone too, so I feel like I have my life back without worrying about whether they remembered to lock the door when they left, or if I'm going to walk in to a wreck in the kitchen or if any of them already fed the dogs today (see pooping reference above) or someone with a load of clothes in the washer when I decide to take a shower.

Life is good, he's alive, I have a pan of my mother's lasagna in the fridge and the Earth is still spinning. What more could a girl ask for?

..

As for me, after five decades I've finally learned to let go and say "yes" when someone offers help.

..

That's the hardest bit, isn't it? Damn strong southern women :)

Big hugs to you ((((((Delta)))))

Great news Rhonda....
Don't worry about what to sell at the festival, you'll sell what you have! You can take orders on things that you don't have. As Brenda tells me, "It is what it is".
Take a big deep breath and keep your sense of humor and "every little thing is gonna be alright"! :D

Phew! A challenging day for y'all - sounds like you might need this:

The best pee-in-my-pants laugh I've had this week when I saw that picture! My oldest daughter brought her two demented cats, T-Rex and Panda, home with her this week so they wouldn't be lonely. Not sure why she thought our 2 labs and 3 quasi-demented cats would think that was a good idea. Her cat Panda looks exactly like that one, except that one looks sweet.

Great to hear Mark is on the mend. As for you, young lady, remember this - when someone asks "Do You Need Some Help?" the appropriate answer is "Yes Please, All I Can Get"!!

Don't worry about Treme .... people love to place orders. They really feel the item is personal that way. It's Hanukkah weekend .... latkes will make everything better!

The American Red Cross blood donor embodies this principle. Please join us in our mission to maintain a safe and stable blood supply by making your appointment to donate blood today.

To find out where you can donate, visit www.givelife.org or call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (1-800-448-3543).

I don't know yall...

That kitten has kind of a crazy look in her eyes.

Seriously: Continued healing karma to the husband, Delta.

May your future memories rival the ones you already have.

I know you'll both be making many more ((together)) through the years.

Peace.
