I was looking at recipes for crawfish monica and ran into a recipe for monica on an Australian radio station's website! 102.7, Triple R FM. The recipe was pretty authentic, but added, "If you can't find crawfish, yabbies are a very good substitute".
What the heck is a yabbie??

One of the bonuses of living in outback Queensland is the Yabbies, they grow even bigger than this one.

Looks like you have it sorted!

A yabby is a freswater crayfish. Lots of folk grow them in their dams. In Queensland we call them redclaw. We have a barramundi fish farm (the we I work for that is) and we keep a small pond for redclaw, just in case the crabs are scarce. In Western Australia, where I grew up, we called 'em jilgies.

I thought your crawfish were like our crayfish, but maybe not 'cos our crayfish are saltwater.

Here's a link to Sydney Fish Market... lots of great seafood recipes under 'Fishline'.

I SO love the nicknames Aussies have for things - our good, good family friend Di-Ann, who's from the Sunshine Coast, cracks us up when she's here with the Aussie terminology: bubbies, googy eggs, white coffee, etc. (I have no idea if those are spelled correctly BTW).

Next time I talk to her, I'll have to tell her that I now know about yabbies! :D

I didn't even know the term 'white coffee' was odd! :D

Um, a cup of coffee with a dash of milk.

Well, it's not odd per se - but it seems to be unique to OZ . . . in a past life, I used to be a barista, and I'd never heard of it before meeting Di-Ann. :D

I drink my coffee long and black, but hell I might just ask for a white one somewhere... just for the fun of it. Doesn't take much to amuse me!

I know! I'm thinking those would look real good in a crawfish boil.
