Just heard that U2 is confirmed for Glastonbury next year. Shouldn't they want to conquer two continents and play Jazzfest as well? Just sayin.....

As much as I would like to see U2 again the Fair Grounds during JF would not be the best venue to schedule them. Their attendance numbers at their Houston show last month was 65,000 plus. The area surrounding the Acura stage cannot handle 65,000 plus music fans. Maybe in 10 years when their fan base is smaller.

I'm not even much of a U2 fan, but I think it would be pretty wild to see them at the fairgrounds!

That was the thought 20 years ago as well.

Well if we are going with that line of thinking I would rather see the Rolling Stones!

I agree but U2 have been very good at propagating the myth that each tour will be their last and people believe it,the amount of tickets they sold back in Aus a couple of years ago was astounding on a per capita basis, and even Paul Hewson said after one show, why are there so many of you here,do you think we want be back again.
RE the Stones,I doubt if they will will ever stop touring Mick loves money so much and their last long term international promoter, has an army, who go out as the same touring family each time, most of whom work well and get on wel. With Jake Berry as Production Manager etc.And theyrely on the work
That may have changed with the Live Nation buy out,but time will tell

hasn't every Stones tour since '72 been their "last"? They certainly milked hints at that over the years...
On that note, I saw the Who's "farewell" tour at Shea Stadium in 1982. They've come back around at least a few times since.
The Clash opened that show. They were great. I wish they had come around more, and stuck around a little longer...

We were there, front center against the police barricade. We never realized how big the crowd was until near the end. We started heading out 10 mins before the end of his set. The crowd will open up and let you out when you have your chairs up in the air and they know your leaving. There were people camped out in front of the bathrooms on the track and people standing behind the bathrooms. My guess is the U2 crowd would be even larger than the DMB crowd. Now, if U2 were to play JF would I be there in the crowd. Hell yes, but it could get ugly fast. Of couse, I would be on the grass next to the track so I could exit as needed. Maybe in a few years U2 would be a good idea for JF. Even DMB did not have as large of a crowd the last time he played JF.

The crowd was smaller the 2nd time around for DMB because my wife and I packed up and left for CJ Chenier prior to the DMB set starting. Nothing agaisnt DMB, we just like CJ Chenier better.

They just need to book themselves incognito, maybe as 2U or Bono's Edge.

The lesser DMB crowd the second time had to do with several factors, including JF attendance having peaked and declined in the intervening time....
U2 would probably draw more... but Springsteen didn't, so who knows? Of course Bruce was right after the flood and business was down from that.

I think if Bruce would have had the E Street Band with him the place would have been much more crowded.

I think the Eagles have done at least 5 or 6 "Final" tours as well. I'm waiting for someone to call it their Social Security tour (I refer to them as wheelchair tours).

I'm a massive U2 fan (first saw them on the "War" tour in San Francisco) and will see them at Giants Stadium on July 19, 2010.
Would I love them to be at Jazz Fest? Duh! Could they do a stripped-down show? They sounded pretty good at the Lincoln Memorial. But personally I'd rather see them in their full element, at night, spaceship and all. I'm just sad the big show isn't coming through New Orleans.
[One time, after seeing the "Zoo TV" tour in Dallas, I was walking down Esplanade of a Friday night. Passed by Lanois' then-studio, and damned if it didn't sound like Bono tracking some vocals coming through the door. They'd been in Texas, had a few days off before the next gig...]
Why is it that their last real show in New Orleans (Superdome-reopening notwithstanding) was that embarrassing egg thing?

I was at that show... not nearly as good as at Madison Square Garden three years ago, I thought.

So what you mean to say is that U2 needs to play the Superdome on the Tuesday or Wednesday between fest weekends, right?

Totally! Ray Charles and Eric Clapton did awesome shows at UNO Lakefront Arena during Jazz Fest and it was great.
And can I just put in a word for Mutemath? They should really open the show - and play at Jazz Fest.
I was at that show... not nearly as good as at Madison Square Garden three years ago, I thought.
I was at their MSG show in 2005 - blew me away - had never been a huge fan before that night, but they put on one helluva show.

I trust you guys are referring to the Who, and not the Clash? I remember the Shea Stadium show more for the Clash than for the Who, although the Who was definitely my reason for attending in the first place. Never saw either of them again since, so I can't really compare to any other of their performances.

Yes, the Who. But now that you mention it, I remember seeing the Clash at the West 45th Street Pier in NYC back in the mid-'80s. The view of the Intrepid aircraft carrier museum right next to the stage, and Strummer's freshly shaved mohawk, made for a highly invigorating set.

The Concerts on the Pier were awesome in the 80's!!
