Just heard (and saw) another wonderful show at the Dakota, by a duo that (according to Henry) had never (before Monday) done a strictly duo gig. Apparently they had played together in a bigger band, but different material, etc.

Anyway, it was a great time; two sets of great jazz on a November night in downtown Minneapolis always beats anything on the idiot box.

Evan Christopher on clarinet, joined by Henry Butler on piano. Thanks to them both for a fun evening, and for their gracious conversation between and after the sets.

As usual I snapped a few pictures; one is at http://www.flickr.com/photos/fantailmedia/4114433268/in/photostream/ . Check out Henry's photos on his website, too!

Anyone who has not seen or heard Evan Christopher play is missing out on something exceptional. Pure jazz. Both old school, and new school. I have seen him several times, first with Tom McDermott at Donna's a couple of times, then most notably with his own groups at Snug Harbor the last two years during French Quarter Fest. I can't wait to see him again.

His Creole Road CD, and Djangology, are both great.

And another great clarinet player that doesn't get enough recognition is Tim Laughlin.

Not to steal the thunder from Mr. Christopher and Mr. Butler, whom I both greatly admire...

But I've got to add a second AMEN to Mr. Tim Laughlin's abilities. He's a great composer and player. Absolutley fabulous!

If'n you're not familiar with his work, please run and buy 'Isle of Orleans'. It's a masterpiece.

As much as I like Tim Laughlin, Evan Christopher has a soulfulness and a funkiness and plays with a visceral physicality that is so unique (and sexy as well:-), I rate him the highest marks of all. Thrilling to the 'enth degree IMHO.
