Someone mentioned Blackened Voodoo in another thread and that got me thinking about how I really used to enjoy that brew. I am definitely a porter and stout kinda guy and like to try the local beverages when I travel.
I looked up Dixie Brewery and found 2 interesting articles linked below on the Katrina aftermath. Sad story....

How hard will it be for me to find Blackened Voodoo when I am there (never seen it in FL but used to get it easily in CO) and what other local brews would you recommend me seeking out?
Thanks!
Marc

Abita is a fantastic microbrewery. They have several different types ranging from a restoration ale that is pale and light, to their flagship brews Amber and darkest (and strongest) Turbodog.
They are located about 45 minutes north of the city - but their beer is on tap just about everywhere in New Orleans.

Hey Now --- The Crescent City Brewing Company also makes some tasty microbrews. Its in the Quarter, across from the Jax Brewery building, on Decatur. They also have good food...... Matthew

Since you're a porter and stout kinda guy, definitely go for the Abita Turbo Dog.
Yummy!
Thankfully, I can get that and the Amber (tasty, too) at my local supermarket here in NY.

My favorite to drink in NO is Abita. The other breweries are mediocre at best.
Best place on the web to find out about beers when traveling is:
http://www.beeradvocate.com
They have ratings on all local beers, breweries, tours etc. for wherever in the world you go.

MRG and I go to a place in Boston (Bob's Southern Bistro, formerly Bob the Chef's) that serves killer southern food, which USED TO serve Abita (LOVE the Turbo Dog:D ), but for some reason stopped carrying it! :(

Blanchard's in Allston used to carry it.....you might want to check with them. But I also know these two places in MA carry it as well (one never messes with the idea of Abita availability in my mind)

The former master brewer from Abita set up his own microbrewery in Covington a couple of years ago. It is called Heiner Brau. They produce a variety of different styles of brew, many seasonal. I brought a case of their Kolsch beer to the patry last year and everyone seemed to like it just fine. I met the master brewer and his wife at Whole Foods a while back and he really enjoys what he does. Seems like a nice guy. They even make a brew called "Festbier", which is the perfect name for us threadheads. I need to try one. You can find some of their products in most of the local groceries here, except for Wal-Mart.

Personally, I think Cresent City Brew Pub isn't getting enough love here. Beer is excellent, especially the red ale. Nice jazz band tucked in the corner, pretty good food too and a great vibe.

The Crescent City Brew Pub DOES have good food, a good vibe (especially for that area of Decatur St.) and tasty brew!!!
I give it a thumbs up! :D

MarcI read on a beer lovers site that Dorignac's supermarket carries the Voodoo. It's on Veteran's Blvd...on your way in from the airport

They do have decent beer! wasn't wowed by the food though.

Well . . . it has been several years since I've eaten there, could be it's gone downhill a bit since then . . . who cares as long as the brew is solid! ;)

Abita has a 20th Anniversary Pilsner out right now that is excellent. It tastes more like a pale ale than a plisner, but if you like your beer on the hoppy side this is for you. And it has a great painting of their original brewery on the label done by James Michalopoulos.

Hey Now Had a couple of beers at the Crescent City Brewing Co. a few weeks ago, when I was in New Orleans for a long weekend, and enjoyed it. I was drinking the Pilsner, which is the lightest beer they brew, and found it was held its own with many of the Pils I have had. I didnt have food this time but remember eating there before, and enjoying the food. There is a bar down the street, Club Decatur, which is just 100 yards from Louisiana Music Factory and House of Blues, which has an amazing selection of draft and bottled beer!!! I always stop there for a couple of cold ones, and am blown away by the varietys of beer they offer. Also, Cooter Browns beer selection is huge, and the food there seems to be pretty tasty. Ah, New Orleans--- Never hard to find a nice little nook to get a good beer! Matthew

Thanks Orleans...Downtown wine and spirits in Sommerville(or Slumminville, as I jokingly refer to it as) carries it. I think Blanchards in West Roxbury will order it for me if I whine enough. They got me my Cakebread..ummm love the Cakebread Chard

Mightyrad - you're quite the wine-o (ha ha). I love the cakebread cabernet - (I'm a big fan of red wine - more so than white -but that is good too). My other faves include Caymus (2001 reserve) etc. but that's not a monday night kinda wine. ....(a little much $$ for everyday.). Have been exploring the 25-30 range quite a bit lately... (and like many of the under 20 bottles !!)

we drive down from St. Louis and i try to bring a case of my favorite local brews from Schlafly to share with others. if you exit the sauvage gate on foot we park right there, i'll try to save you a stout.
i love Abita Turbo dog - best on draft, but ok in bottles - but its actually rather light, smooth, compared to some stouts. the amber is pretty tasty and the purple haze is good for a fruit beer - not too sweet.
the Cresent City pub has some tasty dark beers too. i think i remember something called Black Forrest? during Mo Fest 2005 we would walk over from the levee and get big drafts and carry them back. much cheaper than the vendors on the levee.

lol..yeah I am a white guy (literally and figuratively:D ) I have several faves even in the single digits (high single digits at least) but love the Abita and also the Dixie Blackened Vodoo. On the Gumbo Lenten Repenten tour right now so no al-kee-hal till Easter. /sigh, another, drunken embarrassment on Easter-well my family should be used to that by now/
Take a bath in Abita

Oooh, yeah - Cakebread is my favoritest white/chardonnay. I'm really more of a dry white person (Sauvignon Blanc, Fume Blanc, Chenin Blanc) - pretty much anything with blanc in the name . . .
My all-time fave red is Silver Oak (Life is a Cabernet, Old Friend!)!!! But generally, I prefer the reds (maybe it's because I'm a redhead - no pun intended).
As for beer - I LOVES me some brew and have little patience with silly girls who say they don't like it. Helloooo, didn't you go to college?? That's the only truly affordable adult beverage one can get in college - well, at least it was when I went, back-in-the-day. :D

Great thoughts. Thanks! I will be seeking out the Voodoo and Turbodog.
Also, just had Lambic for the first time at a local beerfest and while I think I may be morally opposed to fruity beers I totally agree that it is incredible! Heavenly might be appropriate and I rarely use such a word.
